Names in the Judah Colt Day Book
Pre 1800 Land Buyers (1798-1799)

In the McCord Library in North East is a valuable local treasure book, the daily ledger of the Pennsylvania Development Company run by Judah Colt and Elisha Marvin from Dec. 1, 1798 to Dec. 1, 1799. An article, "A Window Opens to Erie’s Past" by Beth Simmons about this book appeared in the Journal of Erie Studies, Spring, 1997, Vol. 26, #1, p. 5-23. This list of names which appear in the book shows who was in Eastern Erie County, Erie, and what we now call North East in 1798-1799. The many names listed at the beginning of the Day Book owed the Development Company money, so were listed in an account listing. The lowest account numbers would have been the earliest settlers. In many cases, this list illustrates that the earliest settlers were here many years before given credit in the biographies of the 19th century.
