Cherry Hill Road Cemetery

Contributed by Dorothy Miller

Dorothy Miller has provided the following report on Cherry Hill Cemetery located in Concord Township, Erie County PA.   "In October of 2001, I went to Cherry Hill Cemetery on Cherry Hill Road just south of the old Blakeslee Farm. The cemetery is in rough shape and unmaintained. I was told by a neighbor that Mr. Blakeslee comes about once a year to check on it, and a man sits on the ridge during hunting season. Other than that no one visits. The stones that are left are broken, and/or unreadable with the exception of a few. There were surnames of Blakeslee, Stewart, and Chase. The area is surrounded by a barbed wire fence so the cows cannot get in and damage it any further. It appears that someone has gone in and started to clean it up. The trees have taken over and have fallen and grown up thru the stones. There were more stones unreadaable. I was able to read several stones:

John B. Chase b. Dec. 29, 1801- May 14, 1884
Stewart unreadable
Nancy Blakeslee 1850 the rest unreadable.
More stones unreadable

Reading taken By Dorothy Miller / Sharon Bellinger"

This cemetery is also known as Stewart Cemetery, Hammond Cemetery and Lamon's Corners Cemetery, according to information previously provided by Dick Tefft. I have no information concerning the last two names.

A formal reading of this cemetery was done in 1981 by Thomas Hutzelman as Stewart Cemetery. This reading is on file in several libraries and historical or genealogical societies. In this reading the cemetery is described as being on the west side of Cherry Hill Road, 900 feet of the intersection with Stewart Road. It is located on the top of a small ridge with a small stream to the south and a cultivated field to the north. This particular name apparently comes from Simeon Stewart, who owned a nearby tavern and donated the land. Mr. Hutzelman reported that the last known burial was in the early 1900s of a man named Iz Minor, who was buried without a stone. From this reading, and a previous one done in 1951, it appears that there were perhaps 18 to 25 burials in this cemetery.

Here is an index of names:

Nancy J. BLAKESLEE George CARPENTER John B. CHASE
Orrill CHASE Abigail W. HAMMOND Mary HAMMOND
Paul HAMMOND Elvira HIGLEY Frank MINER
Janet MINER Priscilla MINER Iz MINOR
Dorcas STEVESON   Hannah L STEVESON

Dorothy Miller has also advised that she lives next to the Elgin Cemetery. Anyone seeking information from this cemetery, or from the Elgin Cemetery, please contact Dorothy directly.
