Mr. Bailey was born in Sinnamahoning the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Bailey. He was employee by the Pennsylvania Powder Co., for many years. The Bailey's went to Arizona 5 years ago where the operated a restaurant. He is survived by his wife. Funeral were held Sunday. --- Jan 4, 1963 --   Aged Medix Run Woman Dies Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Geer Funeral Home, Penfield, for Mrs. Elizabeth Viola Barr, widow of Merritt Barr, who died at 7:25 p.m. last Thursday in Maple Avenue Hospital, DuBois, after a short illness. She was 84. Officiating was Rev. Charles C. Graham. Burial was in Benezette Cemetery. A resident of this area since 1921, Mrs. Barr was born Sept. 14, 1876 in Mason Hall, Cameron County, daughter of Mr. And Mrs. J. O. Jordan. She was married to Merritt Barr who preceded her in death in 1944. She was a member of the Methodist Church Surviving are two sons, James and Earl, Medix Run; a sister, Mrs. Sadie Marsh, Keating Summit RD; and a brother, Tom, Driftwood. ---- not dated. <Tombstone Inscription: Elizabeth V. Berry EMPORIUM - (special) - Oscar Leroy Berry, 60, of Sterling Run, died Wednesday afternoon at Andrew Kaul Memorial Hospital in St. Marys following an extended illness. He was born in Sterling Run Feb. 11,1903, son of James and Nora Berry. Mr. Berry was a painter and decorator in this area for many years, and served as Lumber Township supervisor for the past five years. He was a member of the Sterling Run Methodist Church. Surviving are his mother; a brother, James of Warrenton, Va.; three sisters, Mrs Lucille Howlette of Cameron, Mrs. Dorothy Card of Emporium and Mrs. Esther Bates of Sterling Run and nieces and nephews. Friends will be received at he Leo E. Egan Funeral Home beginning at 2 p.m. today and services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday with the Rev. Oliver Krapf of Emporium of Emporium officiating. He had been a patient there for a week He was born in Hicks Run, Cameron County, Jan. 21.1901, the son of Jay Billings and Carrie Bell. Mr. Billings lived in the Hicks Run and Dents Run areas until moving to Driftwood 20 years ago Before his retirement, he was employed as a Pennsylvania Railroad Trackman in the Driftwood Area. Survivors include his wife, the former Phyllis Hanes; three sisters, Mrs. William (Ruth) Wolfe of Canton, Ohio; Mrs. Norman (Claudia) Knebel of Rochester, N.Y. and Mrs. Phillip (Esther) Wolz also of Rochester and one brother, Charles Billings of Smethport. Friends will be received at the Coppersmith Funeral Home starting at 11:30 a.m. today, Removal will be made to the Castle Garden Wesleyan Methodist Church Tuesday where the Rev. Robert Wolcott Interment: Oak Hill Cemetery, Driftwood, Pa. --- COUNTY NATIVE DIES IN ROCHESTER, N.Y. Mrs. Corrie E. Billings, of Rochester, N.Y. Sinnamahoning native died Dec. 3 at Rochester. She was born in Sinnamahoning July 5, 1873 the daughter of the late Lewis and Jane Bell. She was married to Jay Billings, who died in 1906. They live for some time in Dents Run. She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Ruth Wolfe, of Canton, Ohio; Mrs. Claudia Knebel and Mrs. Esther Waltz, of Rochester; two sons, Charles, of Smethport and Harry, of Driftwood. Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Iva Johns, of Adrian, Mrs. Dollie Joyner, of Sharon, 11 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren and 8 great, great grandchildren. Funeral service were held Thursday Dec. 6, in Rochester and interment was made in Riverside Cemetery there. --- Dec. 3, 1962-- ---- Thaddeus L. Brooks is Buried at Sinnamahoning. (as spelled) Funeral Service for Thaddeus L. Brooks, a lifelong Cameron County resident, were held Monday afternoon at the Coppersmith Funeral home with the Rev. Wayne T. Gregory, pastor of the Sinnemahoning Methodist Church, officiating. Interment was made in the Brooks Cemetery, Sinnamahoning Mr. Brooks died in the Maple View Rest Home, Coudersport, Saturday morning after a lengthy illness. He had been there since last November, moving there from Grove House where he had been a guest the past six years. He was born in Sinnamahoning Jan. 1, 1875, the son of the late Marcellus J. B. and Margaret A. Foultz Brooks, pioneer Cameron County residents. He moved to Driftwood as a child and spent the rest of his life in that immediate area. He was a retired Pennsylvania Railroad employee. He was married to Theresa Albright, who preceded him in death. Mr. Brooks served as Postmaster of Driftwood at one time. Mr. Brooks served as the Driftwood correspondent for the Press for many years. He is survived by one son, John W. Brooks, Driftwood and two brothers, John H. Brooks, Masonic Home, Elizabethtown and W. E. Brooks, Pittsburgh. Burfield EMPORIUM - Funeral services for Herbert F. Burfield, 33, of Driftwood R.D., who died at Huntley Wednesday morning, will be held at the Read Funeral Home here at 2 p.m. Sunday. Burial will be in Castle Cemetery. Friends are being received at the funeral home today and Saturday. Mr. Burfield was born Nov. 15, 1929, at Potterdale, the son of Frank and Annabelle Teats Burfield, and was employed by the Pennsylvania Railroad for 18 years. Dr. George Dorman, Cameron County coroner, said death was caused by a self-inflected forehead would from a .22 caliber pistol bullet. He was a member of the Moose Lodge and Methodist Church here and served as a sergeant with the Army combat engineer corps during the Korean conflict. Her husband William Cheatle, died on Nov. 20, 1954 Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Earl Ford of St. Marys, and Mrs. Robert Cartwright of Eldred; tow grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Emaline Canton, Emporium. JOHN, CANADA Asa C. Collins, 96, a Cameron County native died Nov. 12 at the home of his son, Dr. Russell Collins, St. John, New Brunswick, Canada, with whom he had made his home since 1944. He was born in Huntley Sept. 5, 1864, the son of Reuben and Mary Collins. He made his home in Conneaut, Ohio for many years. He was a retired Nickle Plate Railroad engineer. He was a member of United-Congregational Christian Church and Evergreen Lodge 22, F&AM. in Conneaut. In addition to his son he is survived by four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Jennie Johnson, in 1946. Funeral services were held Thursday, Nov. 17, at the Marcy Funeral Home in Conneaut with the Rev. Robert B Marr, pastor of the United Congregational- Christian Church, officiating. COLLINS DIES WEDNESDAY MORNING. Miss Nina M. Collins, Huntley, died early Wednesday morning at the Byron Collins residence in Driftwood where she had resided since April 20. She had been in ill health for some time, but her unexpected death is a distinct shock to her family and many friends. She was born October 7, 1910 in Hicks Run the daughter of the late Charles F. and Ethel Barr Collins. She had resided her entire life in the Driftwood area. She had been employed at Sylvania Electric for 32 years. She was a member of the Driftwood Methodist Church, Emporium Chapter of the Eastern Star and the Sylvania Quarter Century Club. She is survived by a sister Neva Collins, Huntley; two brothers, Ira Collins, Window Rock, Ariz., and Byron Collins, Driftwood. Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Driftwood Methodist Church with the Rev. Wayne T. Gregory, pastor officiating. Interment will be made in the Huntley Cemetery. Friends will be received at the Coppersmith Funeral Home Thursday evening; Friday afternoon and evening. (evening). Funeral services will be held at the Stephen-Burns Funeral Home,266 East Ave., Buffalo, at 11 a.m. Friday, Burial will be in Emporium at 4 p.m. ---- James D. Counsil EMPORIUM - James D. Counsil, 81, of Sinnemahoning died early Friday morning at he Andrew Kaul Memorial Hospital, St. Marys. He owned and operated a general store in that community prior to his retirement, and served on the school board for more than 20 years and was a former Cameron County commissioner. Mr. Counsil was a member of the Methodist Church, Driftwood Loge, F & A.M., No. 532; Williamsport Consistory, and formerly a Member of the Tall Cedars. Surviving are his wife, the former Lola Drum; a daughter, Mrs. Andrew (Betty) Orsich of Emporium; three grandchildren a brother, Edward Counsil of Maplewood, N.J. a sister, Mrs. Roscoe (Helen) Smith of Wilfington, Del. Counsil: 1882 - 1963> COUNTY NATIVE DIES LAST WEEK IN GREENSBURG Word was received last week of the death of Mrs. Mabel Wylie Cox, a County native in a nursing home at Greensburg. Mrs. Cox was born in Sterling Run August 1875 the daughter of the late Alpheus and Eva Wylie. She spent her girlhood in Sterling Run and also was a teacher in the school there, She also taught school in Holliday and Greensburg for many years. Because of the weather the body is being held in Greensburg and will be later brought to Sterling Run for burial. She is survived by a brother Herman Wylie, Sterling Run. Two cousins, Edwin Darrin, Coudersport and Harry A. Wylie, Wilmington, Del., also survive. ---- Ralph Crouse Dies Following Long Illness Ralph E. Crouse, 75, of 732 Ontario Avenue, well known Retired signal maintainer of he Pennsylvania Railroad Company, died at his hone Friday, October 11, at 4:45 p.m. Mr. Crouse had been in failing health the past ten years and confined to his home the past seven years. He was born at Dauphin, July 28,1888, son of the late George W. and Sarah Hinkle Crouse. He lived most of his life in Renovo. He attended the Renovo Schools and was a graduate of the Renovo High School Class of 1905. He attended Pennsylvania State College. He entered the employment of the Railroad Company at Renovo June 10,1905 and retired January 6,. 1954 after49 years of service. He was married to the former Rose Dolan of Emporium, April 26,1928 at Emporium by Father William E. O�Hearn, former pastor of St. Mark�s Catholic Church. Mr. Crouse was a lover of the outdoors. His hobby was hunting and fishing. He spent much of his spare time at his camp on the Southside Mountain overlooking Keating He was a member of the First Methodist Church of Renovo and Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen. He leaves beside his wife, Rose, three daughters and two sons: Mrs. George (Rosemary) Fantaski, Buffalo, N.Y.: Mrs. Thomas (Sarah) Schnars, Renovo; Mrs. Clifford Regina) Rhoades, Buffalo, N.Y.; Ralph E. and George M. Crouse 1900-1979; Hyner Cem.> ---- George Darrin Sinnamahoning, Dies in Hospital EMPORIUM (Special) - George Darrin, 82, of Sinnamahoning, died at the Divine Providence Hospital in Williamsport at 10:20 a.m. Friday. He was a patient at he hospital for the past three weeks. Prior to that the had been confined at the Renovo Hospital for three weeks. He was bon in Sterling Run on Feb. 22, 1878, and was married to the late Mrs. Bessie Mae Krebs Darrin in September 1902 in Sinnemahoning. She died in 1954. Mr. Darrin was associated with the Pennsylvania Railroad shops in Renovo as a caiman for a period 32 years, starting in 1924 and retiring in 1956. For many years he was active in many affairs in Sinnamahoning where he had made his home since 1947 He was a member of the Methodist Church at Sinnamahoning, Driftwood Lodge and Coudersport Consistory. Born Nov 28, 1884, in Emerickville, Jefferson County, Mr. Dempsey moved to the Driftwood area in 1916. He had been a track foreman for the Pennsylvania Railroad for 47 years. Douglas Porter Place of Interment: McKean Memorial Park ---- Miss Virginia Jane Duell Died Suddenly at Conneaut, O., Wednesday, Feb. 29 (this date should be March 1st.) Sadness shrouded the home of Mr. A. C. Collins, 780 Main Street, Conneaut, Ohio, following the mysterious death at 9:27 Wednesday evening February 29, of little Virginia Jane Duell, aged 11, who for the past six years had resided with Mr. and Mrs. Collins. Virginia's mother died at the time of Virginia's birth at Driftwood, Pa., May 15, 1916, where her father Alonzo Duell still lives. She was an only child of Mr. and Mrs. Duell. It is said that the illness baffled the skill of the attending physicians. The exact cause of death has not been definitely determined although what appeared to be a slight accident Monday, Feb. 27, is known to have been a contributing factor. Virginia and a playmate after returning from school were given permission to go to the flats about 4:20 to gather pussy willows. In descending a hill Virginia suddenly turned her ankle and fell, sliding or rolling to the bottom of the hill. She arose apparently none the worse for her tumble. The girls, after gathering their willows, returned to the house and played for some time. Later in the evening, however, Virginia began to cry but could not give the location of any pain, although a slight swelling was noticed above her left temple. No other injuries were in evidence. Soon she began to talk incoherently and a doctor was summoned. After an examination her condition was pronounced, not serious but during Tuesday night she remained in a stupor. On Wednesday she was taken to the Brown Memorial Hospital where an X-ray examination was given. This revealed nothing and Virginia spent the main part of the time in a deep sleep from which she was occasionally aroused. Seemingly she was free from pain, and death came very suddenly and unexpectedly on Wednesday February 29. (March 1, 1927) She was a pupil at the West Main Street School and was very popular with her playmates She was also a member of the First Congregational Sunday School and is said to have possessed an outstanding trait of kindness toward elderly people. A prayer service was held in Mr. Collins home on Friday afternoon at 4:00 o'clock by Rev. J. H. Rankin, Pastor of the First Congregational Church. The remains were brought to Driftwood Saturday morning and the Funeral services conducted in the school house at Huntley, Pa., at 1:30 by Rev. Francis B. Markell Interment was made beside her mother in the burial ground at Huntley. The text used, was part of Ecclesiastes 7:14. "In The Day of Adversity, Consider." -- 1927 - ---- COUNTY NATIVE DIES IN SALISBURY, MD Mrs. May Roth Rock Earl, 92, native of Driftwood, died April (12, 1962) in the Springhill Sanatorium, Salisbury, Md., after a prolonged illness. She was born in Driftwood. She was a long time resident if Elkhart, Ind., where she was an active member of St. John�s Episcopal Church. She was honored by St. John�s Guild in 1918 for distinguished service. She was also a member of the Elkhart Eastern Star Lodge. She was graduated from Dickinson Seminary, Williamsport, with a degree in Music She was the widow if the late John T. Earl, editor of the Driftwood Gazette. She had also resided in Kew gardens, L.I., and Miami, Fla. And the last four years were spent at Berlin, Md. Funeral services were held at the Watson and Whaley Funeral Home, Selbeyville, Del., Saturday with the Rev. William L. DeWees, rector of St. Paul�s by the Sea Episcopal Church, Ocean City, Md., officiating. Interment was made in Bethel Cemetery, Ocean View, Del. Earl, 93, Once Driftwood Editor, Is Dead EMPORIUM (Special) - Word has been received here of the death of John Thomas Earl, proprietor and editor of the now defunct Driftwood Gazette in the late 1800�s, who died Saturday at The age of 93 in Peninsula General Hospital, Salisbury, Md., after a brief illness. Mr. Earl was born June 16, 1868, in Sterling Run, Cameron County. The grandson of one of the first settlers of Emporium John Earl. He was a retired manufacturer of welding equipment. Survivors include his wife, the former Eleanor May Rothrock of Berlin, Md.; two sons, Robert J. of Berlin, and Donald of Wynwood, Pa.; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Earls Dies Was Former Editor John T. Earl, long time owner and editor of the Driftwood Gazette, died December 2 at his home in Berlin, Maryland. Mr. Earl was born in Sterling Run June 16, 1868, the son of the late Jerome and Mary Lewis Earl. His father was the son of one of the First settlers in Cameron County. His parents operated the Sterling House until it was destroyed by fire. They then moved to Driftwood Where the family operated the Curtin House. Mr. Earl entered the employ of the Driftwood Gazette at he age of 15. He had always shown and interest in this field and had many articles published in the Cameron County Press as well as the Gazette. He joined the Elk County Gazette for almost a year. He returned to Driftwood and became a part owner of the paper Later he bought his partner out and carried on alone until the 1890�s when he left the community. He was married to May Rothrock of Driftwood. He served his adopted community in many ways such as school director, overseer of the poor and justice of the peace among others. He then entered the manufacture of welding supplies and was in this field until his retirement. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Elkhart, Ind. And the Episcopal Church at Richmond, N.Y. Funeral service were held December 5 at the Walston and Whaley Funeral Home, Selbyville, Del. with a the Rev. William L. DeWees officiating. Interment was made in Bethel Cemetery, Ocean View, Del. Sinnamahoning Woman is Killed in Accident Mrs. Gerald Haynes of Sinnamahoning, and Mrs. Melvin Gardner, of Daguscahonda, were killed Monday Morning in a three-vehicle accident on the St. Marys-Ridgway Road about three miles west of St. Marys at 9:30 a.m. Mrs. Haynes was pronounced dead at the scene. Mrs. Gardner died in the St. Marys Hospital at 11 a.m. Mrs. Haynes death was attributed to a fractured skull. Mrs. Gardner also suffered a fractured skull as well as a fractured right arm. Also injured in the accident were Mrs. Irene Berfield and Mrs. Rhonda Whitcomb, both of Driftwood and Miss Shirley Gnan, of St. Marys. Mrs. Haynes was a passenger in the truck being driven by her daughter Mrs. Berfield and Mrs. Gardner was a passenger in the Gnan car. A third vehicle, driven by Miss Sally Jo Lund, of Ridgway, a school teacher in the Emporium elementary school, crashed into the car and truck involved in the accident but a few moments before. She was not injured but her car was extensively damaged. According to the State Police who investigated the accident, Miss Gnan was driving a Mercury sedan toward St. Marys when the car hit an icy spot on the slippery highway. It went out of control and turned completely around and into the westbound lane into the path of the Berfield pickup truck headed toward Ridgway The truck struck the rear of the car. Mrs. Berfield's injuries were listed as multiple contusion, bruises and compound fracture of the right knee. Mrs. Whitcomb sustained facial lacerations, probable knee fracture and several fractured ribs. Their conditions were listed as satisfactory. Miss Gnan suffered head lacerations and a possible fractured leg. Funeral services for Mrs. Haynes will be held this afternoon (Thursday) at 2 o'clock at the Coppersmith Funeral Home with the Rev. The son of the late Martin and Rose Ownes Hill, he is survived his wife, Bertha Lewis Hill; one son, Alan of Ridgway; two daughters, Mrs. Bud Siders and Mrs. Harold Bish of DuBois; two brothers, Henry of Ridgway and Abner of Youngstown, Ohio, and two sisters, Mrs. Arvilla Jordan of Emporium and Mrs. W. Gertrude Hill, a retired Driftwood area school teacher, died at Niagara County Infirmary, Lockport, N.Y. early Sunday morning. She had been a patient there for last two years. Miss Hill was born in Grove Hill near Huntley Oct 4, 1878, daughter of the late George and Anetta Owens Hill. She was graduated from Lock Haven Normal School in 1907 and completed further studies acquiring permanent certification in 1909. She had taught in Driftwood, Huntley, and Castle Garden schools for 42 years. Miss Hill was a member of Driftwood Methodist Church. She is survived by two nieces, Mrs. Francis Weidenboerner, Emporium, and Mrs. Guy Daughtery, Tucson, Ariz., and a nephew, Jesse Smith, Burt, N.Y. She moved to Burt to live with her nephew three years ago and then entered the infirmary at Lockport. Friends may call at a local funeral home after 7 p.m. tonight. Mrs. Hill, who had been a resident here for the past 47 years, died last Thursday evening in the St. Marys Hospital. She had been a patient in the hospital for one day. Johnson, 80, of Grant died about 9:30 A.M. on September 4, (1953) in the Maple Ave. Hospital in DuBois. He was stricken by a heat stroke wile strolling around the gas rigs on his property. When the natural gas boom came into the gas field at Benezette from Driftwood, the Johnson property was among the first to be leased. He was half owner in two wells producing on the Johnson Estate, one which is producing 16 million cubic feet daily and the other ten million cubic feet. On the property owned entirely by him, the Kita Gas and Oil Company well is producing 10 million cubic feet daily. Until the time he began receiving royalties for the gas Johnson had been receiving state assistance. He was born at Grant, January 16,1874, son of John and Emily (Miller) Johnson. His wife and two sons and one brother preceded him in death. As he had no other survivors his nearest relatives are Paul Johnson of Buffalo N.Y. a second cousin; Margaret Johnson of Penfield and Mrs. Merritt Johnson of Cleveland cousins by marriage. Johnson, 62, of Driftwood, died Tuesday, Oct. 29, in the Maple Avenue Hospital, DuBois, where he had been a patient since Oct. 9. He had been in failing health for the past year. He was born June 6, 1901 at Huntley, the son of the late William W. and Elizabeth Moore Johnson. He attended school at Huntley and Hicks Run and for a short time at the north side school in Renovo. Mr. Johnson worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad as a track- man in the Driftwood area. He retired this past January after 45 years of service. He was married to E. Edith Saxton, of Renovo, on Dec. 25,1942 at Renovo. He was a member of the Driftwood Methodist Church. Mrs. McKimm was I her usual good health and was in her office here Tuesday. Her sudden and untimely death comes as a distinct shock to her family, her many friends and co-workers in the welfare field. She was deeply interested in and concerned with her work and her many services will be sorely missed. Mrs. McKimm, a lifetime resident of Sinnamahoning, was born there in 1913 the daughter of the late J. Arthur and Elsie Gore Barclay. She graduated from Emporium high school. During World War II she served with the Red Cross in England. She had served the local Assistance Board as Executive Director for the past 10 years. McQuay COUDERSPORT (Special) - Frank S. McQuay, 71, who made his home at 23 Iroquois Drive, Buffalo, and at his trailer home in Roulette, was found dead in the trailer about 9:30 a.m. Thursday. Mr. McQuay, who had been under the care of physician, was last seen at about 7:30p.m. Tuesday working in his garden near the trailer. Neighbors missed him Wednesday and Thursday morning to the trailer where they found Mr. McQuay dead in his bed. John Dec, Deputy Potter County coroner, investigated and issued a certificate of death from natural caused. Time of death was estimated, said Mr. Dec, at about 1 a.m. Wednesday. Mr. McQuay was born in Driftwood Dec. 12, 1892, and was a retired brakeman for the Pen(n)sylvania Railroad. Since his retirement he was making his home here and in Buffalo. He was a member of Port Allegany Moose Lodge, Roulette Volunteer Fire Department, Roulette Rod and Gun Club, Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen and the Odd Fellows Lodge of Buf(f)alo. Miller, 88, a resident of Huntley, died Saturday night at the Grove Home where he had been a resident for the past week. Mr. Miller, who before his retirement three years ago was one of the oldest school board members in Pennsylvania had been a member of the Gibson Township board for 55 years. He had also served as secretary of the board for 52 years. He was born in Miller's Run Oct. 3, 1876, the son of the late Jacob and Martha Mason Miller. After his schooling he went to work for the John E. DuBois Lumber Co., of Hicks Run, and in 1903 took employment with the Pennsylvania Railroad as a railroad bridge carpenter retiring in 1941 after more than 39 years. Mr. Miller was the first president of the Cameron County Board of School Directors and also at one time had been overseer of the poor and Gibson Township assessor The Emporium Lodge of Odd Fellows 984 two years ago honored Mr. Miller for 55 years of active membership. His wife, the former Edna Collins, died June 12, 1931. Charles Lester Miller, Dubois RD3, died at 3:05 p.m. Friday in the Renovo Hospital after an extended illness. He was 86. Mr. Miller was born June 24, 1877 in Miller Run, son of Geo. and Lucy Ann Lewis Miller. He married to Mary Daugherty. She died in June 1961. A resident of Bennetts Valley for 78 years, Mr. Miller was a member of the Driftwood Methodist Church. Burial will be in St. Gabriel's Cemetery here. ---- Killed by Shot In Emporium EMPORIUM - A 27-year old Star Route man was wounded fatally at about 2 p.m. Thursday while preparing to clean a rifle in his home, according to State Police. Officers said Edward Moate died while being transferred from Andrew Kaul Memorial Hospital, St. Marys to Hamot Hospital, Erie. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Warren State Hospital. Kaul Memorial authorities said Mr. Moate was in critical condition when he was taken from their hospital at 5:30 p.m. to undergo neuro surgery at Hamot Hospital. Sgt. Lawrence T. Munson, Emporium-based State Police, said preliminary investigation indicates that Mr. Moate was reaching for a .22 caliber rifle preparatory to cleaning it, when the weapon discharged. A bullet entered the victim's left temple. At the time of the accident, Mrs. Moate was hanging up laundry in the backyard. She rushed to the bedroom where her husband kept rifles, then called the ambulance. A niece, Margaret, notified State Police of the accident. Mr. Moate was born Nov. (4), 1934 at Mix Run near Driftwood, son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Moate, who survive. He attended Emporium schools and was employed as a door-to-door salesman for the Boston Furniture Co., Williamsport. He served fours years in the U.S. Navy. The young boy died Friday afternoon at Kaul Memorial Hospital, St Marys, after a home accident. He suffered second and third degree burns. Details of the accident were not known. Besides his parents he leaves three brothers; his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Smith of Sterling Run, and his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Moate Sr. of Cameron. The Rev. Nelson were held Monday afternoon at the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church with the Rev. David Fye, pastor of the Free Methodist Church, officiating. He had been in ill health, but his sudden death comes as a distinct shock to his family and a wide circle of friends. He was born in First Fork the son of the late Fred and Levina Caldwell Nelson. He was married to Lucille Floyd. He was a retired telegraph operator. He had been employed by the Pennsylvania Railroad for almost 40 years. Nordberg, a highly respected resident of the Driftwood area for the past 53 years, died at his home Tuesday morning. Mr. Nordberg was born in Kohlsbygd, Sweden, July 7, 1882, the son of the late Mr & Mrs. Carl Nordberg. He came to the Driftwood area when he was 19 years of age and had resided there ever since. He was married to Jennie Emily Anderson and they celebrated their golden anniversary several years ago. Mr. Nordberg operated a most successful dairy farm for many years before his retirement He was a member of the Driftwood Methodist Church. Caskey. page 30> ---- Edmond E. Pearsall, 14, Dies From Burn Injuries Edmond Earl Pearsall, 14-year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Edmond C. Pearsall of Castle Garden, died at 3:55 Monday morning from burns received in an explosion Sunday afternoon. The boy in company with his aunt, Judith Pearsall, 14 year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur C. Pearsall were visiting their grandparents in Castle Garden. They went into a shanty, which was used as a playhouse, in back of home. Kerosene was thrown on the fire in the stove to heat up the building. It exploded and the force of the blast threw the boy through the wall. Both children were rushed to the St. Marys Hospital in the ambulance of the Bucktail Volunteer Fire Department of Driftwood. Dr. Robert C. Simpson, Ridgway, Elk County Coroner, attributed death to second and third degree burns over 95% of the boys body. He has issued a certificate of accidental death. Judith is still a patient in the hospital with burns over 30% of her body. She is listed in a fair condition at the hospital. Edmond was born February 24, 1946 the son of Edmond C. and Viola Mae Narby Pearsall. He has spent his entire life in the Castle Garden area. He was a student at the Cameron County junior high school. He is survived by his parents, two sisters, Helen, Tonowanda, N.Y.; Mrs. Sidney Summerson, Sinnamahoning and three brothers, William C., Harold L., and Donald E., at home. Regester Interment: Newton Cemetery Masonic Memorial Rites, Sunday Evening 8:00 P.M. ---- Adopted County Was Served Well By John Schwab John Schwab, who gave of his time and means to his adopted Cameron County for more than 60 years, died early Friday morning at his home at 330 East Allegany Avenue after an illness of a little more that fives weeks. Despite his age, Mr. Schwab took an active interest in life around him and was most active until his final illness. He was born Feb. 17,1877 in Siselon, Canton of Berne, Switzerland the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Jacob Schwab. He came to this country at an early age. He worked during his early youth to finance his education and was graduated in 1901 from Lock Haven Normal School. He began teaching that year in the school in Cameron and latter taught in Sterlin(g) Run He remained in the education field until 1908 when he went into business in Cameron and Bradytown. In 1910 he entered the powder industry in which he remained for the greater part of his adult life. That year he became affiliated with the Cameron Powder Manufacturing Co., at Sinnamahoning. Later he joined the Pennsylvania Powder Co., which he served as General Manager, Treasurer and finally President. He retired from the industry following the disastrous explosion which closed the plant. Despite the demands of his work in industry, Mr. Schwab took the time to serve Emporium He was a member of the Borough Council for the period from 1922 to 1926. In 1926 he was elected Burgess and served one term in that office. In 1932 he was elected to the State House of Representatives and was reelected in 1934. Mr. Schwab was a lifelong Democrat and took an active part in party affairs and was well known and highly regarded by leaders of both parties, statewide and nationally. During his term as Burgess he became an Honorary member of the Emporium Fire Department He considered this a great honor and he was always deeply interested in and concerned with education and this was culminated with the establishment of the John Schwab Foundation in 1952. Money from this has been made available to Cameron County youths to further their education. Many would not have been able to do so if such funds had not been available. Mr. Schwab was a member of the United Presbyterian Church, Emporium Lodge 382, F&A.M., Royal Arch Chapter 227, the Knapp Commandery, Coudersport Consistory and Jaffa Temple in Altoona. He was a member of many of these Masonic bodies for more than 50 years and was always most active in Masonic circles. Funeral services were held at the late home Monday afternoon with the Rev. Samuel D. Regester, pastor of the United Presbyterian Church, officiating. Interment was made in Newton Cemetery. Pallbearers were Riley A. He was employed in the powder industry after his return from service and retired form the old Cameron Powder Works. He is survived by his wife. Smith, 82, of Sinnamahoning, passed away at the Renovo Hospital at 9:45 p.m., Sunday. She had been a patient there for five days after being discovered in a coma in her home on Wednesday morning. Friends and neighbors summoned the ambulance, moved her to the hospital and notified her family. Mrs. Smith was a graduate of the class of 1901 of the Lock Haven State Normal School and taught three terms in Lumber Township at Chapman Hill, Sterling Run and Cameron. She married Chester A. Smith in 1904 and moved from Cameron County. The family returned to the County in 1911 and she resided here from that time. Upon the death of her husband in 1920, Mrs. Smith returned to teaching and served at Driftwood, Sinnamahoning, Castle Garden, Mix Run, Mason Hill, Huntley, and Sterling Run; where she retired in 1948. She was a member of the Cameron County Education association, the Pennsylvania Retired Teachers Association and the National Retired Teachers Association. Mrs. Smith lived in Sinnamahoning for the last forty years and served her community in many ways. She was a member of the School Board of the Independent School District and served as its secretary. For many years she headed up the Red Cross solicitation in Sinnamahoning, was a member of the Sinnamahoning Methodist Church, serving on its Official Board and was a teacher of the Ladies' Bible Class until recently when she felt she could no longer do justice to the office because of her age and physical and physical inability to go to its meetings. She was born in Bald Eagle Township, Clinton County, March 16,1881, to William and Lydia J. Orner, one of seven children, two of which survive her; Raymond Orner of Salona and Mrs. Stella Allen of Lock haven. She is also survived by three sons, Everett, Earl, and Donald; four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Mrs. Smith served as correspondent for the Press for the Sinnamahoning are for many years. She had been a patient at the hospital for the past five days. She was born in Bald Eagle Township March 16,1881, and before moving to Cameron County 11 years age had resided in Clearfield County. Mrs. Smith graduated from Lock Haven Normal with the Class of 1901 and taught in Chapman Hill, Sterling Run and other schools in Cameron County after graduation. Upon the death of her husband, Chester Smith , in 1920, Mrs. Smith returned to teaching. She retired in 1948. She was a member of the Sinnamahoning Methodist Church, a member of the church board of trustees and for more than 30 years taught in the Bible classes. She had been a member of the Independent School Board for 20 years. EMPORIUM (Special) - Mrs. Julia Strawbridge, 93, one of the oldest Cameron County natives, died early Thursday morning at the Blose Nursing Home in Punxsutawney where she has been residing for the past week. She was born May 8, 1867 at First Fork and she was the widow of James Strawbridge. She was the daughter of the late John Mason and Elizabeth Brooks Mason. Mrs. Strawbridge was a former Sterling Run and Grove Home resident. Surviving are an adopted daughter, and a niece, Mrs. Euen Marshall, of Sterling Run. She was a member of the Methodist Church at Sterling Run and the Maccabees. Funeral services will be held here at 2 p.m. Saturday with the Rev. Joseph G. SULLIVAN DIES SUDDENLY TUESDAY William P. Sullivan died suddenly Tues. morning at his home 331 Chestnut Street after suffering a hear attack. Although Mr. Sullivan had retired form the railroad because of Ill health, he had been around as usual and his sudden death comes as a distinct shock to his family and many friends. He was born September 15,1897 in Cameron the son of the late Daniel and Pauline Ostruski Sullivan. He was married to the former Ruth McMillan and they had observed their 42nd wedding anniversary May 11. Mr. Sullivan had been employed as a telegrapher by the Pennsylvania Railroad and had retired several years Ago because of illness. He was a lifetime resident of Cameron County. He was a member of St. Mark�s Church, 4th Degree, Knights of Columbus and was a past Governor of Emporium Moose Lodge. He was also a member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Telegraphers. Woodring, Benezette RD, custodian of the Benezette School. Rev. Meredith Twining officiated and burial was in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Weedville. Mr. Woodring, a life long resident of this area died at 9.10 a.m. Friday in Maple Avenue Hospital, DuBois. He was 76. A native of Hicks Run, Mr. Woodring was born December 25, 1884, son of Samuel J. and Harriet Houtz Woodring. He was married to Sarah Conver, who died in May 1960. Mr. Woodring was one of the few old time lumbermen of this section. He leaves two daughters, Mrs. Ruth English, Sheffield, Pa., and Mrs. Christine Blose, Queenwood, W. WOOLSLAYER IS BURIED HERE MONDAY Thomas R. Woolslayer, highly respected Emporium resident, died last Saturday morning in the St. Marys Hospital where he had been a patient for several days. Mr. Woolslayer fell at his home Tuesday and suffered a broken hip. He was taken to the hospital Wednesday for surgery. He was born April 14, 1893 at Beaver Falls the son of the late John and Carrie Linde Woolslayer. He had resided here for many years. He was married to the former Anna H. Edwards. He had been employed by the Pennsylvania Railroad as a foreman and track and signal inspector, He served for 37 years before retiring. He had also served some time as a Justice of the Peace in Emporium. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Telegraphers and St. Mark�s Church. He is survived by his wife and a daughter, Mrs. George (Joyce) Osmand, Niagara Falls Also surviving are three grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Penn, Clairton, A son Thomas , Jr. died in December 1958. Prayer Services were held Monday at the Coppersmith Funeral Home with the Very Rev Fr. F. M. O�Connell officiating. Interment was made in Newton Cemetery The Rosary was recited at the funeral home Sunday evening by the men and women of St. Mark�s Church. Pallbearers were William Pearson, William White, Lyle Lyon, Walter Klock, Alfred McDonald and Paul Streich. ---- <Thomas R. Woolslayer (Sr.) 1893 - 1963>   Mrs. Daisy Wykle Mrs. Daisy Wykle of 17 E. Main St., died in Bradford Hospital at 10 p.m. Friday. She had been in ill health for several years. She had been a patient in the hospital for the past seven weeks. She was born at Huntley on Dec. 29,1896, and was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Johnson. She had resided here since 1930. Mrs. Wykle had been employed for a number of years as a waitress in Bradford until she retired because of failing health. Surviving are a son, Maurice, a sister, Mrs. Mary Moyer of Bradford; one brother, Frank Johnson of Driftwood; and several nieces and nephews. Friends will be received at the Hollenbeck Funeral Chapel starting 3 p.m. Sunday. A prayer service will be held there at 1:30 p.m. Monday with the Rev.
