47th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry
The 47th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry was organized at Harrisburg in the months of August and September, 1861. The unit was moved to Washington, D. C., September 20-21 and was attached to the 3rd Brigade, W. F. Smith's Division, Army of Potomac, to January, 1862. The unit was then reassigned to the District of Key West, Florida, until June, 1862, the District of Beaufort, South Carolina, Department South, until November, 1862, the District of Key West, Florida, 10th Corps, Department of the South, November, 1862, and Department of the Gulf until February, 1864. The unit then became a part of the 2nd Brigade, 1st Division, 19th Army Corps, Department of the Gulf, to July, 1864, and the Army of the Shenandoah, Middle Military Division, to February, 1865. From then until April, 1865 the unit was assigned to the 2nd Brigade, Provisional Division, Army of the Shenandoah, to April, 1865, the 2nd Brigade, Dwight's Division, 22nd Corps, Department of Washington, to May, 1865, the 3rd Brigade, Dwight's Division, District of Savannah, Georgia, Department South, to July, 1865 and finally to the 1st Sub-District, South Carolina, Department South Carolina, to December, 1865.
The unit served in the defences of Washington, D. C., till January, 1862. The unit then moved to Key West, Florida, via Annapolis, Maryland, and on Steamer "Oriental" January 22-February 4. The regiment then was doing duty at Fort Taylor, Key West, Florida, till 18 June. The regiment then moved to Hilton Head, South Carolina, June 18-22, thence to Beaufort, South Carolina, 2 July, and duty there till October. Participated in an expedition to Florida September 30-October 13th. St. At John's Bluff 3 October and the capture of Jacksonville on 5 October (Cos. "E" and "K"). Involved in the expedition from Jacksonville to Lake Beresford and capture of Steamer "Gov. Milton" near Hawkinsville 6 October (Cos. "E" and "K"). Then participated in the expedition to Pocotaligo, South Carolina, October 21-23, Frampton's Plantation and Pocotaligo Bridge 22 October. The unit was then ordered to Key West, Florida, on 15 November, Garrison Fort Taylor (Cos. "A," "B," "C," "E," "G" and "I") and Fort Jefferson (Cos. "D," "F," "H" and "K") till February, 1864.
The regiment then moved to New Orleans, Louisiana, on 25 February 1864. (Regiment re-enlisted October, 1863, to February, 1864.) At Algiers, Louisiana, 28 February. Participated in the Banks' Red River Campaign March 10-May 22. The unit advanced from Franklin to Alexandria March 14-26. Engaged in the Battle of Sabine Cross Roads on 8 April. Proceded to Pleasant Hill 9 April and Monett's Ferry, Cane River Crossing, 23 April. The regiment performed fatigue duty at Alexandria constructing a dam across Red River from April 30 to May 10. The unit was then in tje retreat to Morganza May 13-20. Mansura 16 May, at Morganza till June 20 and at New Orleans till July 5. The unit then moved to Washington, D. C., July 5-12 and participated in Sheridan's Shenandoah Valley Campaign August to November. Engaged in the Battle of Opequan, Winchester, on 19 September. At Fisher's Hill September 22, the Battle of Cedar Creek October 19th and at Camp Russell, near Winchester, till December 20, and at Camp Fairview, Charlestown, and on outpost duty in West Virginia till April, 1865.
The regiment moved to Washington, D. C., April 19-21, 1865. Participated in the Grand Review May 23-24. Moved to Savannah, Georgia, May 31-June 4, and to Charleston, South Carolina, June 17. Duty at Charleston and other points in South Carolina till December. The 47th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry was mustered out on 25 December 1865.
The 47th Regiment lost during service 5 Officers and 112 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 3 Officers and 170 Enlisted men by disease. Total 290.
