46th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry
The 46th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry was organized at Harrisburg on 31 October 1861. The volunteer unit was attached to Gordon's Brigade, Banks' Division, from November 1861 to March, 1862. Then they were a part of the 1st Brigade, 1st Division, Banks' 5th Corps, and Department of the Shenandoah to June, 1862. Reassigned to 1st Brigade, 1st Division, 2nd Corps, Army of Virginia, to September, 1862. Next, the unit was assigned to the 1st Brigade, 1st Division, 12th Army Corps, Army of the Potomac, to October, 1863, and Army of the Cumberland to April, 1864. Near the end of the conflict, the 46th Regiment was assigned to the 1st Brigade, 1st Division, 20th Army Corps, Army of the Cumberland, until July, 1865.
The 46th performed the following service during the war: Initially assigned to guard and outpost duty on the Upper Potomac till February, 1862. The unit advanceed on Winchester March 1-12, 1862. The regiment was near Winchester on 7 March and the occupation of Winchester on 12 March. The regiment was ordered to Manassas, Virginia on 18 March, and then returned to Winchester. From 24 March to 7 April the 46th participated in the pursuit of Jackson up the Shenandoah Valley. The regiment was at Columbia Furnace on 16 April and was involved in the skirmish at Gordonsville and Keazletown Cross Roads on 26 April. The unit engaged in operations in the Shenandoah Valley from May 15 to June 17. At Strasburg till May 20. Retreat to Winchester May 20-25. Front Royal 23 May. Kernstown and Middletown 24 May. Participated in the Battle of Winchester on 25 May. Retreat to Williamsport May 25-26. At Williamsport till 10 June. Moved to Front Royal June 10-18. Reconnoissance to Luray June 29-30. Luray June 30. At Warrenton, Gordonsville and Culpeper, during the month of July, 1862.
On 9 August the regiment was in the Battle of Cedar Mountain. Then they were engaged in the Pope's Campaign in Northern Virginia from 16 August to 2 September. The unit was assigned to guard trains during the Bull Run battles at Manassas Junction. On 28 August the unit was at Manassas Junction. The regiment participated in the Maryland Campaign September 6-24. At Antietam on the 16th and 17th of September the unit was held in reserve. The regiment then performed duty in Maryland till 10 December. The regiment marched to Fairfax Station December 10-14, and duty there till January 19, 1863. The unit was in the "Mud March" January 20-24. They then moved to Stafford Court House and performed duty there till 27 April.
The 46th regiment was in the Chancellorsville Campaign from 27April to 6 May and the Battle of Chancellorsville May 1-5. The unit participated in the Gettysburg, Pennsylvania Campaign from 11 June to 24 July. The 46th regiment was engaged at the Battle of Gettysburg July 1-3. It the pursued General Lee's Army from July 5-24. Following the Gettysburg Camapign, the unit served duty on line at the Rappahannock till September. The unit was then ordered to Move to Bridgeport, Alabama and was thus engaged from 24 September to 3 October. Assigned guard duty on Nashville & Chattanooga Railroad till April, 1864. The Regiment re-enlisted January, 1864. From 1 May to 8 September the 46th was in the Atlanta Campaign. Present at the demonstration on Rocky Faced Ridge May 8-11. Engaged in the Battle of Resaca May 14-15. Near Cassville 19 May. New Hope Church May 25. Operations on line of Pumpkin Vine Creek and battles about Dallas, New Hope Church and Allatoona Hills May 25-June 5. The unit served in operations about Marietta and against Kenesaw Mountain June 10-July 2. Pine Hill June 11-14. Gilgal, or Golgotha Church, June 15. Lost Mountain June 15-17. Muddy Creek June 17. Noyes Creek June 19. Kolb's Farm 22 June 1864
The 46th was involved in the assault on Kenesaw 27 June, Ruff's Station or Smyrna Camp Ground 4 July and Chattahootchie River July 5-17. They were at Peach Tree Creek July 19-20, the Siege of Atlanta from 22 July to 25 August. Then they engaged in operations at Chattahootchie River Bridge from 26 August to 2 September and the occupation of Atlanta 2 September to 15 November. They participated in the march to the sea 15 November to 10 December 1864. Saw service at the Siege of Savannah December 10-21. Fought in the Campaign of the Carolinas January to April, 1865. They were at Thompson's Creek, near Chesterfield Court House, South Carolina, 2 March, Thompson's Creek, near Cheraw, South Carolina, 3 March, Averysboro, North Carolina, 16 March and were in the Battle of Bentonville March 19-21. The unit participated in the occupation of Goldsboro on 24 March 24. The regiment advanced on Raleigh April 9-13 and served in the occupation of Raleigh on 14 April. They were at Bennett's House on 26 April and the Surrender of Johnston and his army. The 46th regiment marched to Washington, D. C., via Richmond, Virginia, 29 April to 20 May and participated in the Grand Review 24 May 1865. The unit performed duty at Washington till July. The 46th Regiment, Panneylvania Volunteer Infantry was mustered out 16 July 1865.
The regiment lost during service 14 Officers and 165 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 2 Officers and 136 Enlisted men by disease. Total 317.
