List of photos continued from page 1
- 16. Photo of older woman from waist up, seated. She looks to be in her 60s. She is wearing her hair in ringlets over her ears and swept back with a fancy hat on perched on top of her head and a long train hanging down her back. She bears a striking resemblance to Harriet Buncher Kingsford in Photo 13. The hair is the same style and often as people grow older they tend to stick to a style they had when young. Photo 13 would be taken some 10-15 years later than this one. In this photo, the woman is wearing a Civil War style dress with fringed shawl-type effect on top and loose sleeves. She has several chains and beads hanging from her neck, all are quite long, some are past her lap. She has a fancy light coloured 'cravat' at her neck. Photographer: W. Croft & Co. Newton Abbot. Stamped on back: Silver Medal Awarded at Newton Abbot Art Exhibition 1870 W Croft & Co. 26 Queen St. Newton Abbot.
- 17. Photo of young girl and boy, Civil War era. The girl is about 10 or younger and wearing a beautiful light coloured dress with gathered skirt and large puffy sleeves gathered tightly at her wrists. The collar of her dress is either embroidered or has a fancy design, and there is matching horizontal band near hem of skirt, at her cuffs, at waistband and down the front either side of the buttons on the blouse part. Her hair is parted in middle and rolled at the back with long ribbons hanging from it. There is also a top-knot and short ringlets at the top of her head. The boy is about 7 or 8 and he is dressed in a typical Civil War type fashion with dark shirt tucked into high waisted pants which are gathered at waist and narrow in the legs. There are buttons at the top along the horizontal band of his waist, and he has a light collar showing above the shirt. He has a cap in his hands and his hair is parted on one side but loose and wavy. Photographer: Gilchrest, 92 Merrimack Street, Lowell Mass. This may be more of Maria Healey's children
- 18. Photo of young woman in long dress of shiny material with a hoop skirt ending just above the floor. There are large buttons down the front, and her sleeves are off-set, very loose and turning into a flared angled sleeve just below the elbow, with a lighter coloured sleeve under it which ends in a gathered wrist. The darker flared section angles from her elbow to her wrist and has large matching buttons or designs down the side. She wears a long chain and locket or watch which ends at her wasit and she has a flat fancy light coloured collar. Her dark hair is parted in the middle and swept back loosely over her ears ending in a loose roll at the back of her head and nape of neck. There is something at the top of her hair but whether it is a puffy band or more hair I can't tell. Photographer:Mr. Telfer, 194 Regent Street, London. I'd date this at mid-late 1860s
- 19. Head photo of woman with dark hair parted in middle and back in loose roll at back of head, shoulder length. She has a flowery 'thing' at top and side of her head and earrings. She is wearing a round neck light dress with a brooch at the front. Photographer: Geo. C. Gilchrest, 91 Merrimack Street, Lowell, Mass. I think we can assume this is the Healey family again.
- 20. Duplicate photo to Photo #1 but without colouring. Photographer: J. C. Clarke, Artist, Photographer, Aldeburgh
- 21. Photo of older man sitting in upholstered chair. His hand is to his jaw. He is either balding or has very white skimpy hair. He is wearing a dark suit. Photographer: H. J. Ward, Woodstock Cottage, 81 Union Street, Torquay [Devon]
- 22. Photo of woman with hair parted in middle and drawn tightly back and up to braided top knot. She is wearing a dress with a standing pleated collar coming down the front, a loght coloured fluffy stand up shirt collar with a large dark shamrock design brooch in front and a large cross hanging below it. The sleeves are loose but come in tighter at her wrists and it appears she has a very large bustle. Photographer: E. H. Cac Photo, 6 Park Crescent, Torquay [Devon]. Stamp on back "This picture can be enlarged to life size and a valuable painting produced on Paper of Canvas"
- 23. Photo of young boy, standing by chair. He is wearing a jacket which is buttoned at the neck with one button and hangs in an upside down "V" to his fingertips. There are no other buttons on it. His collar is round and flat to his body, above it are bows, it looks like a band of ribbon around his neck and there is a light coloured collar (shirt?) standing above the neck of the jacket and the ribbon. Photographer:The London School of Photography
- 24. Photo of woman standing at cloth covered pedestal table. Her dark dress has a gathered skirt, with what looks like a hoop under it. She has loose sleeves and a dark fancy shawl with scalloped edges around her shoulders, hanging down in a V shape at the back of her skirt. She has long chains around her neck, they end below her waist. Her hair is loosely back covering her ears, in a roll, very Civil War style. She has a fancy flowered cap on her head with long lengths of cloth hanging down the back but brought to the front and placed over her shoulders and chest. There is something odd about her neck, it is huge, looks swollen, either that or she is a very big woman. Writing in inserted label says "Mrs. Alfred Kingsford. My Mother's "Aunt Kingsford" A.C.T" Photographer: Mr. Telfer, 194 Regent Street, London
- 25. Photo of older man standing with his hand on a pile of books. His top hat rests upside down on the table. He has light coloured gloves in his hand. His jacket is short at the front (to his waist) but long at the back (ending at mid-thigh). He has a vest with lapel, and a light coloured shirt with stand up collar and a dark cloth tied at his neck. His hair is parted on the side and combed over. He has a moustache. Writing on paper label inserted reads "Alfred Kingsford. Brother of my Grandfather Wm. Kingsford. Born 1803. ACT" Photographer: The London School of Photography
- 26. Photo of woman in dark dress gathered at waist, no hoop under and the skirt drags on the floor. The sleeves are loose and wide all the way to the wrist. There is fancy embroidery or design along the cuffs of the sleeve. Her hair is parted in the middle and loosely rolled back. Photographer: The London Stereoscopic and photographic Company, 110 Regent St. Cheapside. Sole Photographers to the Internation Exhibition 1862.
- 27. Photo of woman (head and shoulders) with dark hair parted in middle and swept back loosely in a braided top knot. Her collar is a stand-up one and she wears a large necklace and brooch. Photographer: Bradnee, Torquay & newton Abbot
- 28. Photo of young woman (head and shoulders) in a light patterned dress with high collar. Her hair is parted in middle and pulled back to nape of her neck, then tied with a ribbon around her head ending in a bow. Photographer: Amos Photgrapher 70 Biggin Street, Dover. Handwriting on back (not ACT) "Bertha Kingsford, born at Leedy House, Bucklan, Sept. 28th, 1853." Under this in same handwriting is written "1868"
- 29. Head and shoulders photo of young woman.Dark hair is parted in middle and swept back and up, with a dark ribbon on top. She is wearing earings and a large brooch at her collar which is a white flat one. Photographer: W. Bradnee, Torquay & Newton Abbot. Writing on inserted paper label "Aunt Annie Hele" She is almost certainly the same woman as Photo #8.
- 30. Photo of a young man with arms folded across his chest. He has a neatly trimmed beard that is under his chin, not on his face, and no mustache. His hair is a bit long and loose on his head, combed straight back from his forehead. He has a loosely tied scarf or tie around his stand-up collar. He looks somewhat like a younger John Carroll Hele, and in fact he may be as this is a fairly early photo judging by the tie and jacket. Photographer: E. Seeley, Notting Hill [London]
