We are an active, vibrant chapter whose focus includes the following:

Our Military:  We are very grateful to the veterans who have served, or are currently serving, in the United States military.   Members contribute toiletry items, socks, and stationery to the Portland Oregon Veteran’s Hospital.  In addition, a special collection for them is taken each December at our Christmas meeting.

DAR Owned State Museums:  We are especially proud and supportive of the four Oregon State Society DAR museums in Oregon.  Members contribute to the success of these state and national treasures by participating in educational activities with local school children, fund raising events, and committee service.  Please see our webpage devoted to these historic sites.

Education:  Throughout our chapter's history, we have supported DAR schools with special emphasis on Kate Duncan Smith, Tamassee, and the Chemawa Indian School. The OSSDAR provides some tuition and expense reimbursement for Indian students, partly through the scholarship fund originated by the Tualatin Chapter.  In addition, we annually seek a worthy young person to sponsor for one of the DAR scholarships and we actively work with local high schools to promote our DAR Good Citizens Award.

Community Involvement:  We provide subscriptions to the National Society DAR magazine, "American Spirit," to three local libraries, mount public displays of DAR and patriotic related materials, and have completed a WWII archival project at the Lake Oswego Library for which Tualatin Chapter received a 3rd Place National Society DAR Award and recognition in the national DAR newsletter.

Tualatin Chapter celebrated its 50th anniversary in April 2008.  Our membership continues to grow.  We are dedicated to the goals of the DAR and to honoring the service of our patriots while maintaining the warmth, friendships, and camaraderie that mark this vibrant chapter.

History:  Tualatin Chapter was organized in Lake Oswego, Oregon on April 12, 1958, with 18 founding members. The first regent was Mrs. Emmet Stoddard.

Tualatin DAR Founders

The name "Tualatin" was chosen for our chapter because of its historical importance to Oregon.  Tualatin derives from the Indian word "Tuality" or "Twality," meaning slow, restful, or peaceful; all of which describe the Tualatin River, the scenic and peaceful valley through which it flows, and the mountain range nearby.  Tualatin was also the name chosen for the first of the original four districts in the Oregon Territory.
