Links to Information on the
South Family
5th Kentucky Infantry
compiled by Ed O'Rear
The late Ed O'Rear compiled a great deal of information on the South family members who served in the
Confederacy. Some of the information on those Souths in the 5th Kentucky Infantry,
plus links to other sites with more information, is presented here.
The Souths in the 5th Kentucky Infantry were:

Pvt. Thomas Jefferson South, Co. B (ca. 1852-1882) --
Despite his age, a Compiled Service Record actually exists for him.
I have no photo or other info on him.
These six brothers were officially in the 5th Kentucky.
The Gee book on the South family also credits another brother as being in the
Orphan Brigade:
Andrew Jackson "Jack" South - Born about 1835, he was certainly old enough to be
in the army, but I have never seen any record of it, although he is sometimes referred to
as a lieutenant. Maybe he joined up late. But he was sure enough killed by Capt Bill
Strong's men as well, on Quicksand Creek in 1865. His grave cannot be located; his
descendants fear it may have been destroyed by strip mining. He was ironically married to
a cousin of Capt Bill Strong.
Jack is listed as having been killed as a civilian in the Yeoman Letter:
http://www.breathittcounty.com/Yeoman.html
(The other two Souths in that letter were probably either brothers or uncles of Richard L.
South, [who was 1st Sgt. of Co. B, 5th Kentucky, and was killed at Dallas].)
At least two brothers-in-law fought also, but with Morgan's Cavalry:
1. John Holton Bowen (married Judith South), Pvt., Co. D, 1st Battalion Ky. Mounted Rifles
(was a survivor of the River Raisin Massacre during the War of 1812)
2. Edward Harrison Shaw (married Patsy/Pattie South). Served as a Private in Co. B, Chenault's
11th Ky. Cav. He died in Frankfort (according to his death certificate)
in 1926 at the age of 86 and is in the Frankfort Cemetery. He was the Harry Shaw who was
the custodian of the Old Capitol, and is described in this article as demonstrating the
rebel yell during WWI:

And another brother-in-law Asbury Trimble (who was Green Trimble's brother and South
Trimble's father) married Eliza South, and was also killed in Hazel Green during the war,
by whom I do not know ... Strong's men, maybe.
