First Kentucky "Orphan" Brigade Orphan Brigade Veterans at
Reunion
This photo was taken by photographer Frank Wybrant of Louisville, on 18 August 1887, during the Sixth Annual Reunion of the Orphan Brigade in Bardstown, Kentucky. The reunion was held at the St. Joseph College, and the photo was taken in the back of one of the college buildings. The copy reproduced here appeared in the 14 June 1905 issue of the Louisville Courier-Journal (collection of Geoff Walden). A listing of those who were in attendance appears below (click here). Although many of these names
have familiar faces, and they should be able to be picked out in this photo, we have only
been able to identify a few. Anyone who can identify any others is sincerely
requested to contact the page authors at: The following are identified: seated on chairs in the third row, center, left to right: #16 - Gen. Joseph Lewis, #17 - Mrs. Roger Hanson (Virginia), #19 - Gen. S. B. Buckner, #20 - Mrs. Ben Hardin Helm (Emily). Standing at far right in the fifth row is Maj. John B. Pirtle, 9th Ky. (#44). Standing behind and
between the second and third men to the left of Pirtle (with just his head showing, just
to the left of the sign that says 6th Ky) is Thomas D. Osborne,
6th Ky. (#48). A few men to the left of Osborne is Henry Harned, 6th Ky.
(#50). Atchison Lee Harned (6th Ky.) appears in the same row, about five men to the
left of Henry (#58). The following are tentative identifications: # 9 -- Capt.
Price Newman, 9th Ky. (although his name does not appear
in the listing of attendees)
We have consulted with Darlene Mercer, Kentucky Order of Confederate Rose, and Joey Oller, Kentucky Sons of Confederate Veterans, on these identifications, and this is an ongoing process ... a group effort. If you can help, join right in!
