NOTE:  This listing is arranged by rank for officers, and alphabetically for NCOs and privates.  Most of the men in Company F were recruited from the south-central Kentucky counties of Green, Taylor, Wayne, and Adair.  The Fourth Kentucky Volunteer Infantry was mustered into Confederate service at Camp Burnett, Tennessee, on 13 September 1861, as part of the First Kentucky Brigade, better known by its post-war name "Orphan Brigade."  The unit fought in most of the major battles of the Army of Tennessee, from Shiloh through the Atlanta Campaign.  It was then converted to mounted infantry, and opposed Sherman's March to the Sea and Federal operations in South Carolina.  The Fourth Kentucky Infantry was still fighting on 29 April 1865, when it received word it had been surrendered, and ordered to Washington, Georgia, where the regiment was paroled on 6-7 May 1865.  For further information, follow this link to a detailed history of Company F.

ADAIR, John Alexander.  Born 28 May 1827 in Lawrence Co., AL; entered CS service from Green Co., KY. Grandson of Gen. John Adair, Governor of KY, 1820-1824. Married Mary B. Stockton, 3 June 1856. Listed as druggist in the 1860 Green Co. census. Mustered into service and elected Captain, 13 September 1861 at Camp Burnett, TN. Promoted to Major on 13 February 1863, and to Lt. Colonel on 28 February 1863. Fought at Shiloh, where he was severely wounded in the head on 6 April 1862. This wound rendered him generally unfit for service thereafter, although he also fought at Murfreesboro and Jackson. Resigned commission, due to incapacity from wound, 31 August 1863. Died 28 November 1898; buried in the Sims Cemetery, near Canmer, Hart Co., KY.

MOORE, John B.  Born 16 January 1835 in Green Co. Listed as a grocer in the 1860 census. Brother of William B. and Mark O. Moore. Enlisted 15 August 1861 at Camp Burnett, TN. Elected 2nd Lieutenant on 13 September 1861. Promoted to 1st Lieutenant on 15 December 1861, and to Captain on 17 February 1863. Fought at Shiloh (where he was severely wounded in the head on 7 April 1862), Vicksburg, Baton Rouge, Murfreesboro (where he was severely wounded in the side, 2 January 1863), Jackson, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, Rocky Face Ridge, Resaca, and Dallas; from Dallas to Atlanta; at Peachtree and Utoy Creeks; Jonesboro, and in the mounted campaign. Surrendered his company and was paroled at Washington, GA, on 7 May 1865. Committed suicide in Green Co., 17 May 1877; buried in the Greensburg Cemetery.

IRVINE, Henry C.  From Columbia, KY. Mustered into service 13 September 1861 at Camp Burnett, TN, age 22. Elected 1st Lieutenant on 14 September 1861. Died of disease at Nashville, 23 November 1861.

BARNETT, John.  Born 8 February 1835 in Green Co. Merchant in business with Richard Cowherd, 1860 census. Enlisted 1 August 1861 at Camp Burnett; elected 3rd Lieutenant on 13 September 1861. Promoted to 2nd Lieutenant on 15 December 1861, and to 1st Lieutenant on 20 February 1863. Fought at Murfreesboro, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, Rocky Face Ridge, Resaca, and Dallas; from Dallas to Atlanta; Peachtree Creek and Intrenchment Creek. Sick at Lauderdale Springs, MS, July 1863, and at Macon, GA, July-August 1864. Detailed to command the courier line by Gen. Lewis, January 1865. Participated in the mounted campaign of 1865 until sent into Kentucky on recruiting duty in March 1865, and was thus engaged when the war ended. Died 16 January 1915; buried in Barnett-Marshall Cemetery, Green Co.

SMITH, William Ambrose. From Green Co., family of James Smith, farmer (1850 census, age 18, laborer), cousin of William L. Smith (below). Enlisted 2 September 1861 at Camp Burnett, TN, age 28. Elected 3rd Lieutenant / Bvt. 2nd Lieutenant on 17 November 1861. Promoted to 2nd Lieutenant, 15 December 1861. Fought at Shiloh, Vicksburg, Baton Rouge, Murfreesboro, Jackson, Rocky Face Ridge, Resaca, and Dallas; from Dallas to Atlanta; Peachtree, Intrenchment, and Utoy Creeks; and Jonesboro. Sick at Lauderdale Springs, MS, August-December 1863; and at Montgomery, AL, February 1864. Assigned to the dismounted detachment in January 1865. Paroled at Washington, GA, 7 May 1865. Married Annie Herbert Smith, widow of William L. Smith, on 3 February 1870. Died in either Dixie or Chilton Co., AL, 23 April 1897. Florida Confederate widow’s pension file number 668.

BURTON, George Hector.  Born 10 July 1839 in Columbia, Adair Co., son of Joseph and Mary Owens Burton. Enlisted 17 August 1861 at Camp Burnett. Elected 3rd Sergeant, 1 May 1862, and promoted to Bvt. 2nd Lieutenant, 1 April 1863. Fought at Shiloh, Vicksburg, Baton Rouge, Murfreesboro, Jackson, Chickamauga, and Missionary Ridge; was placed in command of the Kentucky Brigade sharpshooters at Dalton, GA, and fought as such throughout the Atlanta Campaign; fought in the mounted infantry engagements in GA and SC. Was awarded a medal for gallant and meritorious conduct while in command of the sharpshooters. Married Sally Bushnell of SC, 11 January 1866, and moved to GA and later SC, where he was one of the leading Baptist ministers in the area. Committed suicide, 2 February 1922; buried in Bethany Baptist Church cemetery, McCormick, SC. ANDERSON, Winston W. From Green Co. Enlisted 12 October 1861 in Bowling Green, age 21. Discharged 22 September 1862, due to "constitutional debility consequent from hereditary predisposition to disease of his lungs." Discharge certificate describes him as 5 feet 7 inches tall, dark hair, eyes, and complexion, occupation farmer. Appears in list of inmates, Pewee Valley Confederate Home, 1912.

ATKINS, Joseph Alexander.  Born 23 December 1842 in Columbia, Adair Co., family of Hugh and Eliza Jane Gilmer Atkins; store clerk in father’s saddle shop in 1860 census. Enlisted 1 August 1861 at Camp Boone. Detailed as company fifer, entitled to pay as Musician. Fought at Shiloh, Vicksburg, Murfreesboro, Jackson, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, Rocky Face Ridge, Resaca, and Dallas; from Dallas to Atlanta; Peachtree, Intrenchment, and Utoy Creeks; Jonesboro and the mounted campaign. Paroled at Washington, GA, 7 May 1865. Took the Oath of Allegiance in Nashville, 20 May 1865. Married Sue J. Harris, 4 November 1869, in Lebanon. Settled in Lebanon, where he worked as an accountant and assistant operations director for a distillery. Retired in Louisville and died there, of pulmonary edema, 6 August 1908. Buried in Ryder Cemetery, Lebanon, KY. Kentucky Confederate widow’s pension file number 4567.

BARKER, Hugh B. From Alabama. Enlisted 13 February 1863 at Manchester, TN. Fought at Jackson, MS. Absent sick at Meridian, MS, July-December 1863. Deserted from hospital at Lauderdale Springs, MS, about February 1864.

BARLOW, Thomas B.  From Taylor Co. Enlisted 15 August 1861 at Camp Burnett, age 21. Fought at Shiloh, Vicksburg, and Murfreesboro. Was captured at Murfreesboro on 2 January 1863; returned to the company in May 1863. Fought at Chickamauga, where he was killed in action, either 19 or 20 September 1863.

BARNETT, James.  From Green Co., 23-year-old farmer in 1860 census. Enlisted 1 August 1861 at Camp Boone. Absent sick, February 1862. Wounded at Shiloh, 6 April 1862, and died from the effects at Jonesboro, MS, 7 June 1862.

BLAKEMAN, Daniel M. Born 1836 in Green Co., family of Moses Blakeman; brother of John Blakeman, first cousin of Milton Blakeman. Enlisted 7 September 1862 at Chattanooga. Absent sick at Dalton, GA, September-December 1862. Mortally wounded at Murfreesboro, 2 January 1863, and died in a U.S. hospital, 28 January 1863.

BLAKEMAN, John T. Born 11 September 1838 in Green Co., family of Moses and Narcissa Blakeman; brother of Daniel and first cousin of Milton Blakeman. Listed as a private in the Greensburg Guards, Kentucky State Guard, December 1860. Enlisted 1 August 1861 at Camp Boone. Absent sick at Bowling Green in January 1862. Fought at Shiloh, where he was wounded 6 April 1862. Fought at Vicksburg and Murfreesboro. Served in the McMinnville Guard, March-April 1863, where he was captured during a Federal cavalry raid, 21 April 1863, and returned to his company a month later. Fought at Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, Rocky Face Ridge, Resaca, and Dallas; from Dallas to Atlanta; Peachtree, Intrenchment, and Utoy Creeks; Jonesboro and the mounted campaign. Paroled at Washington, GA, 7 May 1865. Took the Oath of Allegiance in Nashville, 20 May 1865; described as 5 feet 8 inches tall, with fair complexion, brown hair, gray eyes. Married Virginia Elizabeth Montgomery, 13 October 1868. Died 7 October 1884; buried in Blakeman Cemetery, Taylor-Cox Rd., Green Co.

BLAKEMAN, Milton.  Born in Green Co. about 1839; first cousin of John and Daniel Blakeman. Enlisted 1 August 1861 at Camp Boone, age 22. Killed in action at Shiloh, 7 April 1862.

BOSTON, George.  From Wayne Co.(?). Enlisted 4 February 1862 at Murfreesboro. Deserted at Corinth, MS, 7 April 1862.

BOSTON, Jesse. From Wayne Co. Enlisted 1 September 1861 at Camp Burnett, age 21. Fought at Shiloh. Deserted at Corinth, MS, 1 May 1862.

BOWLING, Richard W.  From Hart Co. Enlisted 17 August 1861 at Camp Burnett, age 26. Promoted to 3rd Sergeant, 1 April 1863. Was prevented by ill health from taking part in the earlier engagements, but fought at Chickamauga. Absent sick at Newnan, GA, November-December 1863. Fought at Rocky Face Ridge, Resaca, and Dallas; from Dallas to Atlanta; and at Peachtree, Intrenchment, and Utoy Creeks. Killed in action at Jonesboro, 31 August 1864.

BRYANT, Daniel M.  From Adair Co. (?). Enlisted 20 August 1861 at Camp Burnett, age 27. Killed in action at Chickamauga, 20 September 1863. Initially buried in GA; body removed to the Confederate Plot in the Frankfort Cemetery in the 1880s.

BRYANT, James Gaither. (also called Nat Gaither) Born 9 March 1840, from Adair Co. Enlisted 20 August 1861 at Camp Burnett. Fought at Shiloh, Vicksburg, Baton Rouge, Murfreesboro, Jackson, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, Resaca, and Dallas; from Dallas to Atlanta; at Peachtree, Intrenchment, and Utoy Creeks; Jonesboro, and the mounted campaign. Paroled at Washington, GA, 7 May 1865. Took the Oath of Allegiance on 20 May 1865; described as 5 feet 8 inches tall, with a fair complexion, light hair, and blue eyes. Died 1 August 1920; buried in the Loy Cemetery, Adair Co.

CASTILLO, James William. Born 16 November 1842 in Wayne Co., family of Michael and Margaret Beeson Castillo (of Irish descent). Enlisted 1 September 1861 at Camp Burnett. Appointed 5th Sergeant, 13 September 1862; later promoted to 4th Sergeant. Fought at Shiloh, Vicksburg, and Murfreesboro. Absent sick at Kingston, GA, March-April 1864, badly crippled (possibly from a wound). On extra duty guarding horses, May-August 1864. Took part in the mounted campaign, and was paroled at Washington, GA, 7 May 1865. Described as 5 feet 4 inches tall, with a fair complexion, light hair, and gray eyes. Married 1st, Eliza Jane Brewster Kennedy; 2nd, Matilda "Kate" Noland; and 3rd, Wilmoth Thomas. Graduated from the University of Louisville Medical School in 1871, and practiced family medicine in Wayne Co. Died 1 September 1895; buried in the Kendrick Cemetery, near Monticello, KY. Kentucky Confederate Pension #2587. Biography in Perrin, Battle, & Kniffin, History of Kentucky Illustrated (1888), p. 766.

CHAMPION, Matthew.  Native of Ireland. Enlisted 1 August 1861 at Camp Boone, age 25. Killed in action at Shiloh, 7 April 1862.

COFFEY, Andrew J. "Tobey" From Wayne Co. Enlisted 1 September 1861 at Camp Burnett, age 19. Died of disease at Bowling Green, 15 November 1861.

CORAN, Richard. Enlisted 20 August 1861 at Camp Burnett, age 28. Listed as deserted (date and place not stated). Dropped from the rolls by 30 April 1862.

COWHERD, Richard T.  From Green Co., born 1836. Married Laura L. Baker, 1 June 1854. 1860 Green Co. census - merchant in business with John Barnett. Enlisted 14 September 1861 at Camp Burnett, age 25 (shown as age 26 in 1860 census). No further military record. Operated a hotel in Greensburg in 1895.

COWHERD, Theodore.  Born 1 January 1844 in Taylor Co., KY. Enlisted 15 August 1861 at Camp Burnett. Fought at Shiloh, where he was severely wounded on 6 April 1862. Fought at Baton Rouge, Murfreesboro, Jackson, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, Rocky Face Ridge, and Resaca (where he was wounded in the right cheek, 14 May 1864). Fought at Dallas, Peachtree Creek, and Intrenchment Creek (Atlanta), where he was wounded on 22 July 1864, and his right arm was amputated. Paroled 25 May 1865 at the hospital in Johnsonville, TN; described as 5 feet 10 inches tall, with a fair complexion, dark hair, and hazel eyes. Married Isabelle W. McDowell, June 1869. Lived in Oldham Co., where he taught school, and later worked in the Louisville Public Works Dept. Died 14 September 1920 of paralysis; buried in Cave Hill Cemetery, Louisville, Section 3, Lot 24. Appears in photo of Kentucky Confederate veterans taken at the Louisville reunion in 1905. Kentucky Confederate pension file numbers 3816 and 4507.

COX, Charles T.  Born 13 November 1837; merchant in Allendale, Green Co., in 1860 census. Enlisted 28 September 1861 in Nashville. Promoted to 4th Sergeant, 15 November 1861. Fought at Shiloh, where he was wounded and captured, 7 April 1862. Took the Oath of Allegiance in prison, and dropped from the rolls, September 1863. Lived in Taylor Co. after the war, where he served as County Clerk. Married Martha Anna Jeter. Died 18 April 1913; buried in Brookside Cemetery, Campbellsville, KY.

CROUDUS, John P. 1860 Taylor Co. census - artist, age 20. Enlisted 13 August 1861 at Camp Burnett. Discharged for disability due to disease, 28 April 1862.

CRUMPTON, William. (also spelled Compton, Cumpton)  1860 Green Co. census - field hand for J. Elkin in Allendale, age 21. Enlisted 28 September 1861 at Camp Burnett. Died of disease at Nashville, 7 December 1861. Buried in Confederate Circle, Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Nashville.

DAFFRON, Ambrose/Abner Morgan.  Also spelled Dafforn, Dafran, Dafford (also called Morgan; brother of John M. Daffron; cousin of Francis M. Daffron; son of Phillip and Margaret (Peggy) Decker Daffron, of Wayne Co.). Enlisted 25 October 1861 in Bowling Green. Died at Nashville, 10 November 1861.

DAFFRON, Francis (Frank) Marion.  Son of Elhannon Winchester Daffron and Amanda Decker, of Wayne Co. (see above entry).  Enlisted 1 September 1861 at Camp Burnett, age 23. Fought at Shiloh, where he was severely wounded in the arm and leg, 6 April 1862. Discharged in consequence of these wounds, 24 July 1862.  Murdered shortly after his return home by Union guerrillas William Ayres and Jesse Bell (Ayres was executed after the war for this crime). 

DAFFRON, John M.  From Wayne Co.; brother of Ambrose M. Daffron (see above entries) Enlisted 1 September 1861 at Camp Burnett, age 18. Sick in Nashville hospital, January 1862. Discharged for disability due to disease, 11 (or 24) July 1862.  Married Mary Ann (Polly) Singleton, 17 May 1869 in Wayne Co.  Moved to Texas in 1877 and awarded a pension from the state of Texas in 1913.  Died near Chico, Wise Co., Texas.

DARNELL, William R.  From Green Co. Enlisted 1 August 1861 at Camp Boone, age 29. Absent sick, roll dated 30 April 1862. Discharged for disability due to disease, 26 May 1862.

DAVIS, Martin L.  From Green Co. Enlisted 1 August 1861 at Camp Boone, age 23. Fought at Shiloh, Vicksburg, and Murfreesboro (where he was wounded). Absent sick at Lauderdale Springs, MS, August-December 1863. Died of disease at Lauderdale Springs, 10 December 1863.

DOBSON, Edward L.  From Green Co. Enlisted 25 August 1861 at Camp Burnett, age 24. Fought at Baton Rouge, Murfreesboro, Jackson, Rocky Face Ridge, Resaca, and Dallas. He was wounded in a skirmish at Pine Mountain, GA, 21 June 1864 (note - probably Kennesaw Mt. - the Pine Mt. line had already been abandoned by then). Absent in hospital, March-August 1863. Absent sick at Macon, GA, September 1864. Took part in the campaign as mounted infantry.

DURHAM, Robert P.  From Taylor Co. Enlisted 15 August 1861 at Camp Burnett, age 36. Appointed 4th Corporal, 13 September 1861. Absent sick in Nashville hospital, February 1862. Fought at Shiloh. Discharged for disability due to disease, 24 July 1862.

DURHAM, William F.  From Taylor Co. (?). Enlisted 21 October 1861 at Bowling Green. Deserted at Corinth, MS, 1 May 1862.

EDWARDS, Frank M.  Enlisted 14 September 1861 at Camp Burnett, age 24. No further record.

GAFFORD, John B. From Warren Co. Enlisted 1 September 1861 at Camp Burnett, age 18. Appointed 2nd Corporal, 13 September 1861. Deserted at Nashville, 18 February 1862.

GENT, John A. (also spelled Ghent, Gentt)  From New Orleans, LA. Enlisted 18 August 1861 at Camp Burnett, age 22. Fought at Baton Rouge, Jackson, and Chickamauga. Served as a teamster, February-April 1863. Deserted on the retreat from Missionary Ridge, 26 November 1863. Took the Oath of Allegiance and enlisted in the US Army for frontier service, October 1864.

GILBERT, Ambrose G.  Enlisted 1 August 1861 at Camp Boone, age 26. Absent sick in Bowling Green hospital, January 1862. Listed as deserted at Bowling Green, 18 December 1861.

GILFOY, J. R. Enlisted 24 May 1862 at Corinth, MS. Listed as "returned to 2d Ky. Regt." on roll dated 2 December 1862.

HALL, Ambrose Jackson.  Born 2 September 1840 in Tazewell Co., VA; entered CS service from Taylor Co., KY. Listed as laborer in household of G.W. Buchanan in 1860 census. Enlisted 15 August 1861 at Camp Burnett. Promoted to 1st Corporal, 1 November 1863, and to 3rd Sergeant, 1 October 1864. Fought at Shiloh, Vicksburg, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, Rocky Face Ridge, Resaca, and Dallas; from Dallas to Atlanta; at Peachtree, Intenchment, and Utoy Creeks; and at Jonesboro (where he was wounded on 1 September 1864). Fought in the campaign as mounted infantry. Paroled at Augusta, GA, 16 May 1865; described as 6 feet tall, with a fair complexion, light hair, and blue eyes. Married Rebecca Buchanan, 10 August 1865. Settled in Green Co. Died 26 June 1916 of cancer of the face; buried in Vance Cemetery, near Eve, Green Co. Kentucky Confederate pension file number 1714. Appears in photo taken at 1905 Louisville Confederate veterans reunion.

HALL, William A.  From Beard�s Store, Owen Co. Captured at Missionary Ridge, 25 November 1864, and sent to military prison at Rock Island, IL. (Notes in his compiled military service record file say his record was misfiled under Co. K, 42nd Georgia Infantry, but that he was actually in the 4th Kentucky. However, his name appears on no 4th Kentucky rosters or rolls, and it does appear on rolls of the 42nd Georgia Infantry.)

HAM, Ezekiel.  From Wayne Co., KY. Enlisted 1 November 1862 at Murfreesboro. Sick in hospital at Ringgold, GA, January 1863. Fought at Chickamauga. Deserted 24 September 1863 at Chattanooga. Took the Oath of Allegiance and went to Pulaski Co., TN. Described as 5 feet 10 inches tall, with a dark complexion, dark hair, and gray eyes.

HARNESS, John R.  From Wayne Co. Enlisted 1 September 1861 at Camp Burnett, age 21. Fought at Shiloh. Deserted at Corinth, MS, 7 April 1862.

HATCHER, Luther T.  1860 Green Co. census - son of Josiah. Enlisted either 12 or 15 September 1861 at Camp Burnett, age 18. Sick at Bowling Green, January 1862. Fought at Shiloh, Vicksburg, Murfreesboro, and Chickamauga (also listed as sick at Montgomery, AL, September-October 1863), Missionary Ridge, Rocky Face Ridge, Resaca, and Dallas; from Dallas to Atlanta; and at Peachtree and Intenchment Creeks. Was captured at Intrenchment Creek (Atlanta), 22 July 1864, and sent to Camp Chase prison. Paroled at Camp Chase, 24 January 1865; described as 5 feet 8 inches tall, with a fair complexion, light hair, and gray eyes.

HENNINGTON, James.  Enlisted 18 September 1861 at Camp Burnett, age 31. Deserted at Oakland Station, KY, 23 January 1862.

HICKMAN, Edward W.  From Davidson Co., TN. Enlisted 10 September 1864 at Barnesville, GA. Fought in the campaign as mounted infantry. Paroled at Washington, GA, 7 May 1865.

HOLLIDAY, Frank W. (also listed as W. Frank Holliday)  From Adair Co. Enlisted 20 August 1861 at Camp Burnett, age 30. Killed in action at Shiloh, 7 April 1862.

JOHNSON, Jesse.  Born 1 November 1834 in Taylor Co.; son of Henry and Elizabeth (Morris) Johnson.  Enlisted 25 October 1861 at Bowling Green. Fought at Baton Rouge. Reported as deserted during the battle of Murfreesboro, 2 January 1863. Possibly captured and took the Oath of Allegiance. Married Jane Underwood, then Synthia White Gaddie. Died 30 March 1912; buried in Brookside Cemetery, Campbellsville, KY. Kentucky Confederate pension file number 4616.

JOHNSTON, Charles Henry.  Born 27 March 1832; from Taylor Co.; son of George Madison Johnston and Sarah Edwards Johnston; brother of George E. Johnston. Enlisted 30 October 1861 at Bowling Green, age 29 (military file shows age 19, apparently incorrect; family history says born in 1832). Fought at Murfreesboro, where he was wounded. Absent sick, March-April 1863. Died from inflammation of the brain, at Beech Grove, TN, 3 May 1863. Has memorial grave marker in Confederate Cemetery, Beech Grove.

JOHNSTON, George Edwards.  Born 31 January 1835 in Taylor Co.; son of George Madison Johnston and Sarah Edwards Johnston; brother of Charles H. Johnston. Was deputy sheriff in Taylor Co. in the late 1850s. Enlisted 1 August 1861 at Camp Boone. Appointed 1st Corporal, 13 September 1861, promoted to 1st Sergeant, 1 April 1863. KELLY, Thomas L. (also spelled Kelley)  Born 10 January 1844 in Lexington, KY; son of John and Mary Elizabeth Sharp Kelly. Enlisted 3 November 1861 at Bowling Green, age 18. Fought at Shiloh (where he was wounded in the left leg, 6 April 1862), Murfreesboro, Jackson, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, Rocky Face Ridge, Resaca, and Dallas; from Dallas to Atlanta; at Peachtree, Intrenchment, and Utoy Creeks; Jonesboro, and in the campaign as mounted infantry, sometimes in the ranks, and sometimes with the party of scouts. Paroled at Washington, GA, 7 May 1865. Married Francis "Fanny" Adams in 1878, and moved to Clinton, IL, where he worked in the grocery and restaurant businesses, and finally in the boot and shoe business, becoming a leading local businessman. Died 20 July 1926 of enaemia; buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Clinton, IL.

LATIMER, William Dizzard.  From Taylor Co. Enlisted 30 October 1861 at Bowling Green, age 19 or 20. Fought at Shiloh, where he was wounded on 6 April 1862. Absent sick in Oxford, MS, September-December 1862. Died of disease in MS, 10 January 1863 (possibly at Oxford, MS).

MARSHALL, Henry W.  From Greensburg. Enlisted 23 August 1861 at Camp Burnett, age 18. Fought at Shiloh, where he was killed, 7 April 1862. (Listed on rolls as "taken sick and missing at Shiloh Apr. 7.")

MARSHALL, Richard B.  Born in 1840; 1860 Green Co. census - field hand, son of Beverly. Enlisted 1 August 1861 at Camp Boone, age 20. Fought at Shiloh, Vicksburg, Murfreesboro, Rocky Face Ridge, Resaca, and Dallas; from Dallas to Atlanta; at Peachtree, Intrenchment, and Utoy Creeks; Jonesboro, and the mounted campaign. Served as part of the McMinnville Guard, March-April 1863. Paroled at Washington, GA, 7 May 1865. Described as 6 feet 1 inch tall, with a fair complexion, light hair, and gray eyes. Went to Texas, October 1895.

MARSHALL, Samuel Edwin.  Born 28 May 1838, from Taylor Co. Enlisted 30 October 1861 at Bowling Green (age shown as 28 on 1862 roll). Fought at Baton Rouge, but ill health kept him generally incapacitated for duty in the ranks. Served as teamster, February 1863 - October 1864. Paroled at Washington, GA, 7 May 1865. Married Mary C. White, 6 December 1860. Went to Texas in August 1868. Died 4 November 1911; buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Whitewright, TX.

MAYS, Joseph D.  (also spelled Mayze) From Green Co. Enlisted 11 September 1861 at Camp Burnett, age 21. Died of disease at Nashville, 23 November 1861.

MOORE, Mark O.  From Greensburg; brother of John B. Moore and William B. Moore (all sons of John Moore, Greensburg jailor). Enlisted 1 September 1861 at Camp Burnett, age 12, as company drummer. Served in the McMinnville Guard, March-April 1863. Absent sick at Lauderdale Springs, MS, August-December 1863. Detailed for extra duty at Brigade HQs, January-April 1864. Discharged by general order, 9 April 1864, for being underage. Reportedly hanged by a lynch mob for molesting a woman in Wahalak, MS, June 1884. See letter in the Barren County "Progress," June 1984.

MOORE, William B.  From Greensburg, brother of John B. Moore and Mark O. Moore. Enlisted 1 August 1861 at Camp Boone, age 22. Elected 2nd Sergeant, 18 March 1862. Fought at Vicksburg, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, and in the mounted campaign. Was frequently precluded from field duty by ill health. Absent sick in February 1862, and sick at LaGrange, GA, September 1864. Served in the McMinnville Guard, March-April 1863. Paroled at Washington, GA, 7 May 1865.

NELSON, James W.  Born 5 February 1831, from Adair Co. Enlisted 17 August 1861 at Camp Burnett. Appointed 2nd Corporal, then promoted to 1st Corporal, 1 April 1863. Fought at Shiloh, Vicksburg, Baton Rouge, Murfreesboro, Jackson, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, Rocky Face Ridge, Resaca, and Dallas; from Dallas to Atlanta; at Peachtree, Intrenchment, and Utoy Creeks; Jonesboro, and in the mounted campaign. Was wounded severely in the back below Camden, SC, in the last battle in which his company took part, late April 1865 (roll dated 28 April 1865). Absent sick at Nashville, January 1862. Died at the Kentucky Confederate Home at Pewee Valley, 22 May 1907; buried in the Pewee Valley Confederate Cemetery.

NICHOLS, Joseph.  From St. Louis, MO. Had served a year in Wheat’s Louisiana Battalion, and enlisted in Co. F on 10 October 1862 at Knoxville, TN. Promoted to 4th Corporal, 1 October 1864. Fought at Murfreesboro, Jackson, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, Rocky Face Ridge, Resaca, and Dallas; from Dallas to Atlanta; at Peachtree, Intrenchment, and Utoy Creeks; and Jonesboro. Took part in some of the mounted campaign, but did not fight in all of the engagements because he had never learned to ride (see William C. Davis’ The Orphan Brigade, page 159, for confusion with Col. Joseph Nuckols). Named to the Confederate Roll of Honor after Murfreesboro, for carrying the regiment’s colors from the field after two color-bearers had been shot.

PEARCE, James A. (also spelled Pierce)  From Hart Co. Was a member of the 2nd Kentucky, but escaped capture at Ft. Donelson, and transferred to the 4th Kentucky in March 1862. Fought with this company at Shiloh (where he was wounded). Promoted to 3rd Corporal, 2 September 1862. Returned to the 2nd Kentucky after that regiment was exchanged, and fought at Hartsville, TN, where he was killed on 7 December 1862. Named to the Confederate Roll of Honor by Company K, 2nd Kentucky, after Murfreesboro (for his actions at Hartsville).  Buried in the Hartsville Cemetery.

PEEBLES, Robert R. (also spelled Peoples)  Born ca. 1841 in Mercer Co., KY; entered CS service from Columbia, Adair Co. Enlisted 1 August 1861 at Camp Boone, age 19. Fought at Shiloh, Vicksburg, Murfreesboro, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, Rocky Face Ridge, and Resaca. He was captured at the latter place on 15 May 1864 and was exchanged at Point Lookout, February 1865. He returned to his company in SC and fought in the subsequent mounted engagements. Paroled at Washington, GA, 7 May 1865. Described as 5 feet 6 inches tall, with a dark complexion, dark hair, and gray eyes.

PETTUS, Thomas T.  From Taylor Co. Enlisted 15 August 1861 at Camp Burnett, age 35. Died of pneumonia at Burnsville, MS, 10 April 1862.

PETTUS, William F.  From Taylor Co. Enlisted 15 August 1861 at Camp Burnett, age 33. Appointed 4th Corporal, 15 December 1862. Later 3rd Corporal. Fought at Murfreesboro, Jackson, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, Rocky Face Ridge, Resaca (where he was wounded slightly in the groin), and Dallas; from Dallas to Atlanta; and at Peachtree, Intrenchment, and Utoy Creeks. Was mortally wounded and captured during the latter battle, 6 August 1864. Died in Federal captivity.

RUCKER, Daniel B.  Born 1 January 1841 in Green Co. 1860 Green Co. census - son of Ann, age 19, farm hand. Enlisted 1 August 1861 at Camp Boone. Fought at Shiloh. Transferred to 3rd Kentucky Infantry, 15 April 1862. Paroled at Montgomery, AL, April 1865. Was a resident of the Kentucky Confederate Home at Pewee Valley in 1912. Died 5 July 1922; buried in the Pool Cemetery, Princeton, KY. Kentucky Confederate pension file number 1873.

RUDD, Edward P.  From Green Co. Enlisted 15 Augsut 1861 at Camp Burnett, age 26. Appointed 3rd Corporal, 13 September 1861 (?), and promoted to 2nd Corporal, 12 January 1863 (had served as 2nd Corporal from September 1862). Fought at Shiloh, Vicksburg, Murfreesboro, Jackson, Rocky Face Ridge, Resaca, and Dallas; from Dallas to Atlanta; at Peachtree, Intrenchment, and Utoy Creeks; and at Jonesboro. He was captured at the latter place, 1 September 1864, and was paroled and returned to his company. Fought in the mounted campaign, and was paroled at Washington, GA, 7 May 1865.

RUSSELL, Andrew Jackson.  Born July 1841 in Wayne Co. Enlisted 1 September 1861 at Camp Burnett, age 20. Sick in hospital in Bowling Green, January 1862. Fought at Shiloh, where he was wounded and captured, 6 April 1862. Was exchanged at Aiken’s Landing, 10 November 1862, and returned to his company. Was detailed on detached service in the regimental wagon yard, June-December 1863. Fought at Resaca, where he was severely wounded in the left hand, 15 May 1864. Fought in the mounted campaign. Paroled at Augusta, GA, 29 May 1865. Married Mary Ella Gray, 2 April 1868. Died 18 October 1912; buried in the Glasgow, KY, cemetery. Kentucky Confederate pension file number 1878.

RUSSELL, Andrew Knox.  Born 17 August 1838 (or 1839) in Columbia, Adair Co., son of Andrew and Betsey Russell. Enlisted 1 September 1861 at Camp Burnett, age 24. Appointed Commissary Sergeant, 11 October 1861, and promoted to 4th Sergeant, 1 August 1863. Was usually confined to his official duties, but fought in some battles. Absent sick, September-December 1862, January 1863, October 1863, and October 1864. Detailed to extra duty guarding horses in the regimental commissary, January-April 1864. Married Laura Bridgewater, November 1865, and moved to Marion Co., where he was sheriff in the 1880s. Later moved to Louisville and engaged in the coal business. Died in Louisville of cardiac asthma, 1 April 1914; buried in Ryder Cemetery, Lebanon, KY. Kentucky Confederate pension file numbers 1877 and 2791.

SAULSBURY, William C.  From Maryland. Enlisted 1 August 1861 at Camp Boone, age 24. Elected 3rd Sergeant, 13 September 1861. Died of disease at Nashville, 21 November 1861.

SCOTT, Benjamin Bell. Born 4 September 1834, from Green Co. (1860 census - physician, son of John Scott). Enlisted 14 September 1861 at Camp Burnett, age 26. Appointed Acting Asst. Surgeon in February 1862, and served as such at Shiloh and Baton Rouge. Discharged by order of Gen. Bragg, 15 November 1862. Later joined 3rd Kentucky Cavalry and paroled at Athens, GA, 7 May 1865. Married 1st, Eliza Jane Moore (sister of Capt. John B. Moore), 4 September 1867; 2nd, Valleria Toomey, 26 May 1874; 3rd, Margaret Veluzat, 22 November (or December) 1887. Died 16 January 1908; buried in the Greensburg Cemetery. Kentucky Confederate pension file number 1498. Appears in photo of Kentucky veterans taken at the 1905 Confederate reunion in Louisville.

SCOTT, John B.  From Taylor Co. (1860 census - farmer, age 40). Enlisted 15 August 1861 at Camp Burnett, age 45. Fought at Shiloh, where he was wounded and captured, 6 April 1862. Was sent to prison at Camp Douglas, and exchanged 10 November 1862. Rejoined his company and fought at Murfreesboro, Jackson, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, Rocky Face Ridge, and Resaca. Was severely wounded in the bowels at Resaca, 15 May 1864, and died from the effects at a hospital in Atlanta, 17 May 1864. Buried in the Confederate Section of Oakland Cemetery, Atlanta.

SKAGGS, Fielding Russell.  From Green Co. (1860 census - farmer, age 25). Enlisted 18 October 1861 at Nashville. Absent sick at Bowling Green in January 1862. Fought at Shiloh, Vicksburg, Murfreesboro, Jackson, and Chickamauga. Was wounded at the latter place, 20 September 1863, and lost his left hand. Named to the Confederate Roll of Honor for Chickamauga. Returned to the company in April 1864, but was absent sick in Eatonton, GA, for most of 1864. Married (1st wife) Nancy Jane Pace, 16 September 1856; (2d wife) Mary Jane Johnson, 30 April 1859; (3d wife) Sarah (Sally) Elkins, 26 September 1868, and moved to LaRue Co., KY. Was shot to death in an altercation on Upper Brush Creek, Green County, in July 1886.

SKAGGS, John Henry. Enlisted either 15 August or 14 September 1861 at Camp Burnett, age 20. Deserted 17 December 1861.

SMITH, Daniel Lunksford.  Born 9 January 1841 in Green Co.; son of Perigoyne Madison and Liticia Williams Smith (first cousin of Harley T., Samuel W., and William L. Smith). Enlisted 24 or 25 August 1861 at Camp Burnett. Fought at Shiloh, where he was wounded on 6 April 1862. Also fought at Jackson and in the mounted campaign. Detailed to the division butchery, November 1862 - April 1864. Paroled at Washington, GA, 7 May 1865. Married 1st, Mary Howell Wooldridge, and 2nd, Fannie Loyall. Died in Green Co., 19 September 1931, the last survivor of Company F. Buried in the Howell Cemetery, Allendale, KY. SMITH, Harley Thomas.  Born 3 May 1836 in Green Co.; son of Weston Augustine and Elizabeth Marshall Smith (first cousin of Daniel L., Samuel W., and William L. Smith); 1860 census - age 23, overseer on farm of W. J. Smith.  Enlisted 1 August 1861 at Camp Boone. Fought at Shiloh (where he was wounded), Murfreesboro (where he was again wounded, slightly in the breast), Chickamauga (where he was again wounded), Rocky Face Ridge, Resaca, and Dallas. Absent sick at Macon, MS, during the period July-December 1863. Captured during a skirmish at Kennesaw Mt., 20 June 1864, and sent to prison. Paroled at Camp Morton, IL, 23 May 1865. Married Mary J. Harper, 14 July 1867.  Moved his family by covered wagon to Kansas and on to Oklahoma, where he settled in Pottawatomie Co., serving as justice of the peace in McLoud in the late 1800s. Died 11 April 1919 of senility and vesicular calculus; buried in the McLoud Cemetery. Oklahoma Confederate pension file number 2148.

SMITH, William Lloyd.  From Green Co.; son of John A. W. Smith (?); 1860 census - school teacher, age 24, cousin of William A. Smith (above).  Enlisted 1 August 1861 at Camp Boone, age 26. Elected 1st Sergeant, 13 September 1861. Reduced to 4th Sergeant, 18 March 1862. Absent sick in January and April 1862. Discharged for lameness due to disease, 10 September 1862. Moved to Alabama and married Annie Herbert in 1864; died in Dallas Co., AL, in September 1866. His widow married William A. Smith.

STONE, Marshall Ney.  From Wayne Co. Enlisted 14 August 1861 at Camp Burnett, age 19. Elected 5th Sergeant, 13 September 1861. Transferred to 6th Kentucky Cavalry, 16 or 24 May 1862. For references to a wooden canteen he owned while in the 6th Kentucky Cavalry, see Confederate Veteran Vol. 17 (1909), p. 525 and Vol. 18 (1910), p. 169 (this canteen still exists in a private collection in south-central Kentucky).

Promoted to 3rd Corporal, 15 December 1862. Fought at Shiloh, Vicksburg, Murfreesboro, Jackson, and Chickamauga. Killed at Chickamauga, 20 September 1863. Probably buried in the Confederate lot, Frankfort Cemetery.

THOMPSON, Alexander A.  Born in West Point, Hardin Co, ca. 1845; family of William "Curly Bill" and Louisia Thompson (family from Taylor Co.). Enlisted 18 August 1861 at Camp Burnett, age 19. Fought at Shiloh (where he was wounded, 6 April 1862), Murfreesboro (where he was again wounded, in the knee), Rocky Face Ridge, and Resaca (where he was wounded in the ankle, 15 May 1864). Detached for service in the pioneer corps, July-August 1863. Absent wounded at Montgomery, AL, May-August 1864, and at Macon, GA, September-November 1864 and January 1865. Returned to duty, 13 February 1865, and took part in the subsequent engagements of the mounted campaign. Died 21 July 1930 of uremic poisoning; buried in the Perkins Cemetery, near Bloyd’s Crossing, Green Co. Kentucky Confederate pension file number 1958.

NOTES:

1. Spellings are shown as they appear on period muster rolls and rosters, with alternate spellings shown where known.

2. Allowance should be made in some cases for those listed as deserted. Some of these men doubtless were enlisted in other units after prolonged absences, and others may have returned after muster rolls ceased to be turned in to Richmond (late 1864).

3. It will be noted that there are several glaring differences between the age given at enlistment, and the age based on census records or family data. The age at enlistment was, of course, given verbally by the enlistee; some of those who were underage doubtless claimed to be "over 18," a common practice in 1861.
