Early Settlers: Royal Hazelton

Royal Hazelton:  First Resident of Eugene?

A provacative article appeared in The Lane County Historical Society Newsletter in September, 1976:  "according to a recently found article on our earliest history, the city of Eugene might well have been named Royal or Hazelton.  Royal Hazelton is credited with having taken up the exact claim on the West side of the Butte before Eugene Skinner arrived.

Plans to build a log house were interrupted when Mr. Hazelton became disenchanted and moved on south.  Not far from Cottage Grove is a Hazelton Valley and perhaps the spot where he finally settled."
