Chickenman devoted to fowl friend

"Eighty-five year old Dohrman Grant, related to both Ulysses S. Grant and Stonewall Jackson, has acquired a devoted fan in "Chicken". At one time, Chicken lived next door but transferred her idolatry to Dohrman, resulting in the neighbors giving Dohrman the bird. He is quite sure Chicken is a female, who thinks he is her father. He said, "she loves me". Mostly Chicken stays in her box in the garage, but occasionally she is allowed in the house. Whenever Dohrman is in the yard or chopping wood, she is his constant companion. And, she is his shadow if he walks next door, never letting him out of her sight. There is no need for fencing to deep her from wandering off as she would not consider living elsewhere. Dohrman described driving off the other day, and neighbors calling to him that Chicken was on the roof of the car. Beneath her black and shiny feathers beats a devoted heart."

Cottoneva remembered on anniversary

"The last major ship disaster at Port Orford occurred on February 10, 1937 when the 113-ton steamer Cottoneva went aground east of Battle Rock. The Cottoneva had been loading lumber at the Port Orford dock, when the stern-hold nearly loaded, cause the bow to rise and act as a sail. Though headed seaward, she failed to get up enough steam to clear the roadstead and was driven to the beach just east of Battle Rock. The ill-fated crew were saved by a "breeches buoy" or sling anchored to the hill near the beach. This old vessel was built in 1917 and after it beached, was purchased by Orris and Louie Knapp who used the lumber and timbers to build a large barn. Much excitement was evident in town. All school children, especially the high school students who went to the bluff to watch the rescue of the crew. Some of the students on hand were senior class students Effie Parson, Bill Sweet, Dode (Forty) Woodworth, Charles Fitzhugh, Hicky Fromm (Leland is his first name but he was always called Hicky), Dan Arts, Hazel (Miller) Cram, Roy Miller, Esther (Dedrick) Conley, and Minnie Kohl and 40 other students from the high school all sat on te bluff above Battle Rock."
