Seeking information on the NEWTON family: Welin Blackmer NEWTON b. 1863 moved to Drain in Douglas Co. c. 1901 and operated the Newton Bros. sawmill there. He and his wife Anna Helena FIXSEN had four sons, three of whom were living in 1910: Otis Welin, Frederick LeRoy (who later reversed his first and middle names) and Welin Ernest. The family is listed on the Pass Creek Precinct census of 1910. In 1912 the family moved to Albany and d. 19 Apr 1939 in Benton County. Welin's brothers were Arthur E. NEWTON b. 1861 m. Ellen E. WHITELEY and Fred B. NEWTON m. Emma R. SOX. Welin is related to Henry Euberto NEWTON who came to Drain c. 1900 and was the other partner in the Newton Bros. Sawmill. He and his family are listed in the 1900 census in Pass Creek Precinct. His wife was Clara Etta LEIGHTON. Their living children were: Lawrence Euberto NEWTON, Sr., Clarence Lee NEWTON, Elmer Irwin NEWTON, and Ralph Lionel NEWTON. Lawrence stayed in Douglas County most of his life. In 1925 he was operating a cafe in Canyonville. He married twice, to Jessie Mae BROOKS and Goldie Monema DAVIS HAMILTON. He had seven children. He moved to Tiller c. 1950 and died in a nursing home in Roseburg in 1977. Clarence stayed in Drain, married Florence Jane RAYMOND, and died there 11 Sept 1931. His children were Gordon, Rosa and Veta. Elmer married Mary Esther ALLEN in Drain and in 1923 was working for the Pioneer Mill in Douglas County. His father suffered a stroke in 1928 so he changed professions, and became a dealer in second-hand articles. He purchased what had been the Drain Academy and the house next door, working there until moving to Marshfield in 1936 and on to Ashland, Jackson Co. in 1947 where he died in June, 1976. Ralph NEWTON married Eugene QUINN in Drain and stayed there until moving to Coos Bay sometime before 1977 where he died 25 Mar 1977. His children were Barbara and Lionel, both of whom have married twice. I believe Barbara is now living in Roseburg. Any information on any of these families is welcomed!
