Where to Find Benton County Records


Enlistment Records: Enlistment records won't be found locally - they would most likely be found within a military service record package that could be ordered from the National Archives if you can determine some details about branch of service, dates served, and where the soldier enlisted.

Draft Registration Records:
A microfilm copy of the registration cards for Benton county, Oregon can be located through Your local LDS Family History Center.
Film Titles are:
Oregon, Baker County A-Z, Benton County A-B, Film #1851979
Oregon, Benton County A-Z, Clackamas County A-G. Film #1851980
Both films are described as:
World War 1 Selective Service System draft registration cards 1917-1918
When searching through the microfilm, you'll find that the cards are arranged in "roughly alphabetical order", by surname and grouped by draft board area, within the county.

Copies of the Draft Registration Cards may also be ordered from the National Archives branch in Georgia.

In your letter be sure to say you want copy(s) of the WWI Draft application Cards. Include the name of your ancestor and his race, the State and the County. If you want copies of ALL of the cards with a given surname, ask them the cost of the copies and send a SASE for them to let you know the copying cost. In your letter be sure and say you want a copy of the FRONT and BACK of the card. Be sure to send a SASE for the return of your copies.
**Note: The current cost is apparently $10.00 per card

World War I Personal Service Histories
This information, gathered by the Oregon State Defense Council and the State Historian from 1918 to 1922, was used as the basis for the distribution of medals. The records include standardized forms as well as some attachments and photographs. The standardized form information includes name, date, type of service, injury or death data, and parents place of birth. Some of the forms include narrative information describing an individual's experiences or record.
