Aurora
Aurora was once part of Whitchurch Township, now the Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville. It also overlaps a bit into the Township of King. Aurora now comprises its own district. If you're looking through records that are filed according to township, it's Whitchurch that you want, but don't forget to try King if you cannot find what you're looking for in Whitchurch. Aurora didn't officially separate from Whitchurch until the early 1970s.

East Gwillimbury
In some records, the town of Newmarket was part of East Gwillimbury. Because of border changes, you may also need to check the township of Whitchurch.

Metropolitan Toronto
Originally named York its nickname was �Muddy York�. Present-day Metropolitan Toronto, or "Metro Toronto," or "T.O." for short (these are all modern nicknames, not historical ones), includes City of Toronto, City of York, Borough of East York, City of North York, City of Scarborough, City of Etobicoke, and the former Township of York.
The Metropolis has also has absorbed Parkdale, Riverdale, Swansea, Forrest Hills, Bracondale, Seaton Village, Yorkville, Deer Park, Davisville, Eglinton, Leslieville, Norway, Riverside, Todmorden, Doncaster, and Chester.
There is also a Toronto township in Peel County. So be certain that what you are after is actually the city of Toronto and not the township. Here's one clue: the City of Toronto was called York until 1834. So if your reference to Toronto is before 1834, you want Toronto township in Peel county. Even after 1834, there may still be some confusion.

Newmarket
Newmarket used to be part of Whitchurch Township, and later the Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville. It also is sometimes grouped with East Gwillimbury Township. It is now politicially separate, but early records which are filed by township will show it as part of one of those two townships. Newmarket even includes a sliver of what was King Township.

North Gwillimbury
North Gwillimbury township does not exist today. Most of what was North Gwillimbury is now part of the Town of Georgina. North Gwillimbury was originally part of Georgina, until 1826, when they were separated. They were reunited in 1971.

Richmond Hill
Richmond Hill was formed from parts of the townships of King, Vaughan, Whitchurch and Markham. There is also the Village of Richmond Hill. So, when you are trying to find records you may have to check under all of these districts. If you can find on a map where the place is, that will give you a clue which area to look under.

Scarborough
In the past also spelled Scarboro. Was the Township of Scarborough from 1850-1953. Became a borough in 1953 and a city in 1983. Includes West Hill and Agincourt.

Whitchurch-Stouffille
Whitchurch township and the city of Stouffville are, in older records, separate. They were amalgamated in the early 1970s. Whitchurch township also originally included the town of Aurora and part of the town of Newmarket, which have now been separated from it. Early records will be listed only under "Whitchurch township."
