Thomas Flager was of Dutch extraction, arriving in Adolphustown via the United States when an infant. In 1814, he married 19-year-old Nancy Roblin. The nuptials were solemnized by Reverend Robert N. MacDonald at Adolphustown, and witnessed by John Canniff and Catharine Flagler. The young couple settled on Lot 12 in the third Concession of Hillier. Thomas laboured to clear the land and build up a prospering farm. Thomas and Nancy reared eight children: Esther A., Philip, John R., George D., Solomon, Jane E., Catharine, and Stephen N. For twenty-five years Thomas carried on farming and blacksmithing. At this point he decided to move to Pleasant Valley, now know as Hillier. There he purchased another farm and built a blacksmith shop where he taught his son to carry on the trade. Thomas and Nancy retired to Brighton, where they both passed on within a four month period in 1872. Thomas was a member of the Society of Friends in his religious affiliation.
