Three Howe Brothers left England for the beckoning New County, and settled down in Vermont. Rufus heard rumours of wealth in the promising wilderness to the north, and thus encouraged, came with his brother to Prince Edward County in 1815 where he decided on Hallowell as an ideal location. Later he sold land to Harvey and Peter Hunt and moved to Hillier where he purchased one hundred and fifty acres. Aside from clearing his own land, he worked for other settlers, among them Mr. Huff and Mr. Saylor. His wife was the former Elizabeth Hunt. By the time he passed away he had become a wealthy man.
