Robert Grimmon was an enterprising young lad. He was apprenticed to Captain Charles, a shoemaker in England. Preferring his independence, he came to Canada in 1815. From the moment he landed in Quebec, he found work day by day, gradually working his way west until he came to Picton. With hard work and careful saving, he soon was able to afford to buy his own farm on the Bay shore between Picton and Glenora. Here he married a young widow whose maiden name had been Ellis. Robert's son, James, married Mary Ackerman, and served in the Light Horse Cavalry under Captain Wright. One of James' grandsons, Lieutenant Alva, spent eighteen years in No. 5 Company. In the 16th Battalion, then became postmaster at Black River Bridge. Another grandson of James, Edward, was Reeve of his township, and a member of the County Council. James passed away in 1840.
