He decided to emigrate to the United States, but when the Revolutionary War broke out, he joined the Loyalists and eventually came to Canada. He was granted land in Ameliasburgh, where he built a lovely home and raised a family. His reputation for hard work and strength of character was a source of pride to his family. Robert's son David owned and ran a grist mill which was a boon to the community. Previously, all grain had to be transported to Kingston to be ground - an incredible hardship in early pioneer days. David served in the Prince Edward County militia at Carrying Place in the 1837 Rebellion, marching from there all the way to Toronto. He was a well-educated man and taught school for many years at Roblin's Mills. David's son, Isaiah, moved to Toronto.
