From The Settlement of Prince Edward County by Nick and Helma Mika. Transcribed here by Linda Herman Pioneers of Prince Edward County BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES PETER VALLEAU Arrived at Adolphustown. Peter Valleau and his wife, Janetie (Jannettie) Lazier were the first members of the Valleau family to settle in Prince Edward County. They were with their fellow-Loyalists who arrived in Adolphustown in 1784. Peter Valleau was born in Bergen County, New Jersey in 1751. He was a descendant of French Huguenots who fled from the religious persecution of Louis XIV's rule. The ;Huguenots ancestors of the Prince Edward County Valleau family fled to New York in 1685. Peter Valleau and his family lived in Adolphustown until 1795, at which time the moved to Sophiasburgh. By 1810, Peter Valleau was the Treasurer of Sophiasburgh Township. Peter and Janetie Lazier lived on a three hundred acre farm with their three children. The eldest was a son, Hildebrand, who was born in America. The middle child, Cornelius, married Anne Rowe in 1798. The first of Cornelius and Anne Valleau's eight children received the name of the pioneer, Peter. Mary, the third child born to Peter and Janetie Valleau, was born in Canada. She married John Benson. The pioneer Peter Valleau was buried in the Conger Methodist Burying Ground.
