Transcribed here by Linda Herman Pioneers of Prince Edward County BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES THE LEAVENS FAMILY Early New England family. John Leavens left the County of Essex in 1632 with his wife Elizabeth. He had a son. John, born in Roxbury, Mass. John Jr. had a son, Peter, who in turn had two children, Esther and Peter who was born in 1707. Peter Jr., married Catherine Caston in 1745 and had ten children, of which three came to Hallowell Township. Their son Joseph who married Phoebe Atwill; Benjamin who had married Sarah Cunningham and their daughter Catherine who married Abraham Jyatt. Benjamin, the youngest, came to Canada settling north of Bloomfield in 1802. He practised his trade of shoemaking here as well as being a farmer. A nephew of Benjamin and Joseph Leavens also settled in Bloomfield. His name was Peter Leavens. He was the first to start a tanning business in Bloomfield. Eliphalet Leavens was another member of the Leavens family who settled near Bloomfield in 1820. Daniel Leavens came with his father Benjamin in 1802 when he was only seven. He married Jane Blount and succeeded his father on the homestead.
