Long Island, New York, was the birthplace of John Gorssline, whose father was born in Holland. John was born in 1769, and later came to Prince Edward County, settled on the second Concession of Sophiaburgh, and carried on his trade as a weaver. Eventually he became a full-time farmer. He bred and raised exceptionally fine horses. John's first wife was Jane Cronk, daughter of the pioneer Abraham Cronk, and his second wife was Sally Adams. John Gorssline had a total of fourteen children. Some left no descendants. Jacob continued to live in the old homestead, treasuring the original deed of the farm, dated 1802. Catherine Gorssline married Daniel Lucas and moved to Michigan. Reuben bought Robert H. Salyor's farm in 1882 and lived there for the rest of his life, until 1895.
