Dungannon is Ireland was the birthplace of John Goodwin and his six children. He and his family aspired to greater opportunities, thus chose to risk the hazardous journey overseas, arriving first in Quebec, and making their way from that city to Prince Edward County. They took time to assess their surroundings. First, they went to Picton, then to Cramahe Township in Northumberland County. Being more favourably impressed with prince Edward County, they rerturned to Cherry Valley at the head of East Lake. Here, John worked in the general store with Simeon Washburn for a period of two years. He then purchased a farm where he settled down for the remainder of his lifetime. John lived to be seventy-five years of age, while his wife passed on in 1825 at the age of fifty. John's son, Owen owned a successful farming enterprise in Hillier, while his second son, Frank, first farmed in Athol, before moving to Waupoos. John's third son, also named John, farmed in Athol. John's grandson, Robert, the son of John, Jr., was a stockbreeder and farmer in Athol; other interests led him to become town councillor and school trustee.
