The ancestors of Isaac DeMille were of French origin. Driven from France during the persecution of the Huguenots, they went to Scotland, where Anthony was born in 1664. Anthony came to the present site of New York City, where he married Elizabeth Vanderliphorst, and raised four sons and five daughters. One of the DeMilles who moved to New Brunswick was placed next to Haliburton on the Canadian literary roll of fame. He wrote a number of books, and was Professor of History and Rhetoric at Dalhousie College in Halifax. Isaac DeMille came to Northport from Vermont in 1792. Here he farmed two hundred acres; he was also granted six hundred acres in the Township of Reach. Wolves, bears and bobcats were a constant threat to sheep, which Isaac raised in order to provide clothing for his family. For food, he hunted and fished. He died in 1817 at the age of sixty-two. His wife passed on in 1846. Nathaniel Solmes, Isaac's grandson was born near Northport on April 21, 1829. When he was twenty-two, he married Wealthy DeMille, and raised five children. He farmed near Fish Lake for forty years, and was a member of the Sophiasburgh Council. Please contact The Schooner with additional information.
