From The Settlement of Prince Edward County by Nick and Helma Mika. Transcribed here by Linda Herman Pioneers of Prince Edward County BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES HUGH GARRETT From Belfast, Ireland. Belfast in Ireland was Hugh Garrett's home. Hugh hazarded the journey across the Atlantic to Dutchess County, New York, with his two sons, Isaac and Benjamin. Isaac was the first to come to Prince Edward County, around 1795 or 1796. He paid twenty-five cents per acre for four hundred acres of land along the lakeshore close to the present village of Wellington. There was but one previous settler in the area - Daniel Reynolds, who owned six hundred acres and built a large home on it. A few years later, Isaac's brother Benjamin arrived in Prince Edward County, and settled on land between Isaac and the pioneer, Daniel Reynolds. Issac's wife was the former Sarah Carman, and Benjamin too for his second wife Sarah's sister, Margaret.
