Benjamin Rowe, his wife Mary Devonport, and their four children settled in Prince Edward County shortly after the initial arrival of United Empire Loyalists in the area. Rowe had been born in Dutchess County, New York about 1764. Upon his arrival in Canada, Rowe was granted two hundred acres of land on the Bay Shore of Sophiasburgh. The eldest child born to Benjamin and Mary was William. He and his wife, Martha Doxsee, settled in Sophiasburgh and became the parents of Benjamin, Archelaus and Ann. John Rowe was the second child born to the pioneer Rowe. He also settled in Sophiasburgh with his wife, a former Miss Jones. Their six children were: Gilbert, Harriet, William, Elias, Isaac and Lydia. James Rowe settled in Sophiasburgh, as did his two older brothers. James and his wife, Mary Potter, had eight children: Allan, George, Sarah A., Royal, Drusilla, Emmeline, Martha and Jay. The youngest child, and the only daughter, born to Benjamin and Mary Rowe, was Ann. She settled in Sophiasburgh with her husband, William Potter. Anne and William Potter were the parents of William, Mary A., and Miranda. The pioneer, Benjamin Rowe, died in 1844, in his eightieth year. Another family by the name of Rowe descended from William Rowe, who was born November 28, 1828 at Carrying Place. Rowe married Catherine Quackenbush January 18, 1855. Most of their offspring moved to different areas of Canada.
