Transcribed here by Linda Herman Pioneers of Prince Edward County BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES ARCHELAUS DOXSEE Traveled through Mohawk Valley to arrive in Canada in 1800. Archelaus Doxsee's English parents lived on Long Island near Brooklyn. Archelaus married Martha Rayner in 1781. He came to Canada in 1800, bringing his family with him. He travelled along the Mohawk River Valley to the St. Lawrence, thence across the Bay until he finally arrived at Northport. Archelaus' son, Sylvanus Doxsee, married Elizabeth Shortt, daughter of a Prussian soldier whose original name was Adam Kurtz. Adam chose to fight for King George III in the War with his American colonies. When the war ended, he came to Canada and settled on three hundred acres of land. Adam's son, John L. Doxsee, became post-master at Gilbert's Mills, and served on the Council of Sophiasburgh. He was a member of the County Council and Reeve of the Township. The local church is affectionately known as the "Doxsee Church." Professor Egerton R. Doxsee was born March 7th 1869, son of Rev. Archelaus and Alma VanDusen Doxsee. He married Alfretta Augusta Chisholm and fathered three children. He was an ordained minister as well as Professor of Classics at Albert College.
