ANDREW DENIKE Born in New York in 1756. Originally French Huguenots, the Denike family emigrated to Holland, and from there to New York. Andrew Denike fought during the Revolutionary War, then came to Canada to settle in North Marysburgh. He was born in 1756, and married Catherine Bird before coming to Prince Edward County. He worked as a mariner until 1812. A story is told by his descendants that his ship was captured by the American Government, but Captain Denike regained control during the night and brought it back to Canada, with his captors on board. A musket and powder horn which Andrew Denike captured in the War of 1812, is a treasured keepsake of the Denike family. Andrew's second son, also named Andrew, was born in 1799. Charles A. Denike became Postmaster. The Denike farms are considered to have been models of excellence. James Albert Denike became a Doctor of Dental Surgery, while James L. Denike was known as the "Fruit King". Three other members of the Denike family also became doctors, namely George, Isaac and Andrew, all cousins of James L. Denike.
