Settlement of Carronbrook lost name but not charm
If you were motoring along No. 8 highway in the vicinity of Stratford and asked a passerby the distance to Carronbrook, he would probably reply he had never heard of such a place and if he were an aged resident of the district he would be probably telling the truth, for the Dublin of today is the Carronbrook of the seventies. The village only became known as Dublin on Dominion Day 1878, when it became the police village of Dublin.
The first settler at Dublin was a tavern keeper to whom the Canada Company had granted two-hundred acres of land on condition that he erect and conduct a tavern for the benefit of settlers coming into the Huron Tract.
Just how long he remained here is not known, but we do know that he was succeeded as tavern keeper by Robert Duncan who had named the little settlement after a pretty little stream that flowed through the place and later moved away to Port Rowan. [I assume Mr Duncan moved, not the stream.] U. C. Lee, the first merchant at Dublin, was also the first postmaster.
The first men named to handle the municipal offices of Dublin were known as trustees. They were Joseph Kidd, Thomas King and Alexander Ross and the first was chosen as "inspecting Trustee" by the others.
Just why the interesting name of Carronbrook was dropped, no one seems to know, but the fact that Dublin was chosen as the new name is probably accounted for by the many Irish families that settled in that district during the early days of the last century.

Perth County is located in south-western Ontario in about the middle of the peninsula. There are many small towns and hamlets in this area, and the largest city is Stratford. Stratford currently has a population of about 30 000. This population swells in the summer tourist season! For the most part Perth County consists of rural agricultural land. The other major industry is tourism because of the Stratford Festival.
It is one of the few counties in South-Western Ontario that doesn't touch any of the Great Lakes. Because of its location, and distance from the Great Lakes, it was one of the last areas in Ontario to be settled. People who aren't familiar with Ontario often confuse it with Perth, a city in Lanark County.
