Daniel D. Campbell, Lieut-Col and J. P., of Listowel, was born near Seafell, in Arran's Isle, in 1832. He was the second son of Dugald and Mary Campbell, of Lochranza, who emigrated to Lower Canada, settling in the township of Inverness. Mr Campbell recieved a fair education, having attended school for several years in the Eastern States. In 1856 he arrivedin Listwoel, which at that period was a hamelt of a few log dwellings. Here he at once entered into commercial pursuits, erecting th first frame store in the village. Mr Campbell's life affords a good illustration of what can be accomplished by perseverance, honesty of purpose, and a kind disposition. He was an architect of his own fortune, and, what is better far, he was a man whom the citizens of Listowel delighted to honour. At one period of his life with the mercantile affairs he managed a milling business and farm, evincing a fine simplicit of character through all.
When Wallace was separated from Logan and Elma for municipal purposes he was appoiknted returning officer to cal the first meeting. Subsequently for a number of years he served as councillor, and, on Listowel being incorporated, was elected a s member of the council, ultimately being chosen reeve. He was also mayor of Listowel for several years, and voluntarily resigned that honour.

Perth County is located in south-western Ontario in about the middle of the peninsula. There are many small towns and hamlets in this area, and the largest city is Stratford. Stratford currently has a population of about 30 000. This population swells in the summer tourist season! For the most part Perth County consists of rural agricultural land. The other major industry is tourism because of the Stratford Festival.
It is one of the few counties in South-Western Ontario that doesn't touch any of the Great Lakes. Because of its location, and distance from the Great Lakes, it was one of the last areas in Ontario to be settled. People who aren't familiar with Ontario often confuse it with Perth, a city in Lanark County.
