Sudbury District OGS -
Branch/Member Projects

By: John Allan of Sudbury District Branch OGS #20839

Cenotaphs in town squares and plaques at arenas, legion halls, or church entrances often list men from the town or parish who died in the World Wars. These are a useful but often-overlooked sources, yet they are clearer and far easier to transcribe than cemeteries or hand written microfilms.

As a test data for OGSPI I've computerized St. Andrew's United Church Sudbury, Pro Cathedral Roman Catholic Church North Bay, Waterdown WW 1, and Tom Davies Square Sudbury. You can see the results by visiting (war and military category). Thanks to John Collins of OGS Lambton Branch for promoting the same independently in Lambton Life.

There is a need for volunteers all over Ontario to do a little bit of marking down, typing, and e-mailing as text files to Just follow the general pattern you see in OGSPI with each name as a separate paragraph and a header like w@ca.on.nipissing.north_bay 1939-1945. Other branches may copy the above for their own newsletters.

Contact John Allan at 1 705 983 4341 or e-mail him at or snail mail P. O. Box 313, Azilda, ON P0M IB0.
