Excerpts from
Minute Books
Johnstown District/Leeds and Grenville Court of General Sessions of the Peace
1800-1834
Ontario Archives, MS 699 Reel 1

Transcription and Notes by Maridel Crawford-Brown

These records list court cases (without details of the trials) of petty crime dealt with by local Justices of the Peace; tax and other bills being paid with amounts and to whom;
yearly appointments of local constables to the townships, and granting of tavern licences, all with names.

One of the records' greatest values is in having the members of Grand and Petit juries listed. Those men's names might not be found elsewhere. There are also such things as
Abel Stevens' petition (twice) to be allowed to celebrate marriages as a Baptist minister. It appears never to have been granted to him. The justices did not think him well and properly
ordained and asked for sufficient proof. As we know, he went on to perform marriages anyway. Then there is information about construction of the Gaol and care of prisoners, etc.

Although transcribed with care, there may be errors here, and researchers are advised to verify against the original records. Page layout has generally been maintained; exceptions
are prefixed with '-'. The transcriber's notes appear in [square brackets].
