Ashton & Ashton
Station: Is located on the Jock River, partly in Beckwith and partly in Goulbourn Township, Carleton County. Its former name was Mount Pleasant or Sumner's Corners. c1840 an outlet was established for mail in the area but the post office did not officially open until July 6, 1851. |
Blacks Corners: Named after John Black an early settler. The Knox Presbyterian Church was built there in 1846. It shows in the Historical Atlas for Lanark County. |
Carleton Place: Located on the Mississippi River. Founded in 1818. It was first called Morphy's Falls. The post office was opened in 1830. |
Franktown:
First building occured in 1818 or 1819 for the ex-military soldiers. 21 acre townsite was laid out in 1821. Franktown PO and townsite show in the Historical Atlas for Lanark County. |
Gillies Corners: Was named after Archibald Gillies who had an inn there 1830s to 1850s. Although the name doesn't show in the Historical Atlas for Lanark County, it does show a building there. |
Prospect: The earliest burial in the Prospect Cemetery is recorded in 1830. The Prospect Methodist Church (later United) was built next to the village. Prospect PO is in the Historical Atlas for Lanark County and it shows two Churches at that time. |
