MRS.
JAMES MORROW
'In the midst of life we are in
death." Such were our
thoughts as we stood in the presence of and gazed on the mortal remains of
womanhood's bloom, plucked ere the withering hand of decay had marred the
beauty of that young life, handsomely coffined and lying there to sleep
that slumber which shall be broken only at His command.
There passed peacefully away at her home, Donaldson, on Sunday
night, April 1st, at
eleven o'clock
, Mrs. James Morrow, who had been ill but a few weeks.
Her death came as a shock to her many friends and relatives.
Deceased was highly esteemed in the community and her early removal
at the age of twenty years and five months leaves a vacancy in the home
that cannot be filled. Her
maiden name was Margaret J. Paul, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George
Paul, Donaldson. In February,
1916, she became the loving wife of James Morrow.
Besides the sorrowing husband, she leaves to mourn her loss a
little son a few months old, her father, mother, and two brothers.
The funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon.
Service was conducted in Mundell's school by Rev. Mr. McMullen.
The remains were laid to rest in the cemetery there.
The pallbearers were Henry Morrow, Henry Ryder Neil Morrow, Thos.
Sargeant, Wm. Sproule and R. J. Sargeant. |

MORROW
Newspaper clipping - 5 Drown as
Truck breaks ice at Minaki.
Minaki, Jan. 14 - An Ontario Hydro
truck smashed through the ice this frigid resort
town yesterday dumping five men to their deaths in 15 feet of icy
water. Three
crawled from under the ice to safety and five more ... up to their
shoulders in water... were dragged from the vehicle by a fast-thinking
Hydro lineman who slashed a tarpaulin rear of it, that was trapping them
in the water. The temperature
was 40 below zero at the time. At homes and in hospital Sunday night, the
survivors told of a freezing swim through the inside of the truck to the
open rear end of it, 15 feet below the surface of the water.
The accident occurred at Gunn lake three miles south of Minaki and
about 130 miles east of Winnipeg
. "I could hear them
moaning and screaming in there," said A. L. Foley of Arinsdale, Man., one
of the three who rode in the cab of the vehicle and the man credited with
saving the life of the five who escaped through the hole in the tarpaulin.
"I pulled out all of them who could get to the hole. But
five of them didn't make it. Maybe
they never knew what hit them." The dead are: Charles W. Franklin, 21, of Swan River, Man.;
Alec Morrisseau, 43, of Pine Falls, Man.; Leon Morrow of Snow Road,
Ont.; John Essex of Leichestershire, Eng.; and I. A. Frits whose address
was listed as Minaki but who was believed to have moved there only since
he came to work on a nearby Hydro electric Project. Foley rode in the cab
with Ben Luckavitch of Whitney and Ferdy Tozer of
Newcastle, N.B., and Tozer was driving. "I
was driving the line crew in for lunch, said Tozer, "We've been
running truck over that lake all season. "But you can't just tell
with these lakes, The currents do tricky things.
You can go over a spot in the morning and have two feet of ice
under you. By nightfall the
current can take that down to four inches. Something like that happened
here. "Then all of a sudden I felt her go on me, I couldn't do a
thing about it. The rear
end of the truck sank deep in the lake so that the vehicle was standing
almost vertically in the water. The
three in the cab scurried to safety. "From under the tarp, we could
hear one of those guys yelling, "cut the tarp, cut the tarp, “Tozer
said, "I had the only pocket knife in the crowd.
Foley grabbed it from me and he jumped on the tarp.
Only a bit of it was sticking out of the water. "First thing I
knew he was reaching down and grabbing one after another as they came out.
Then I noticed the hole in the ice behind the truck. One after
another guys were coming to the surface.
Luckavitch and I went back and started pulling them out" What
happened in the rear of the vehicle was told by Frank Masiowski, 31,
father of one child, who joined the line crew last Monday. "I was
sitting right by the tail-gate. All
of a sudden I got a sinking feeling. I
looked down. There were the
wheels sinking in the ice. First thing I thought to do was jump.
But that very moment the whole truck slipped into the lake.
"There was a great surge of water.
We were all hurled up toward the front.
I could feel arms and legs all around me.
It was pitch dark. I
can remember saying to myself, "Well, that's that, I've had it” I
was just going to give up and stay there.
Then I membered I had a wife and kid at home, I had to get out of
there and that's all there was to it. "I didn't know anything about
the hole in the tarp up front, but I did know that the back was open.
I was about six feet under the surface of the lake about this time.
"I started swimming through the truck grabbing the ribs that
held the tarp in place and pulling myself down toward the rear.
Finally I got there. Don't
ask me how. I dragged myself
outside the truck and let go. It
seemed like it was still falling. I
didn't realize it was resting on the bottom of the lake.
I floated to the surface. I
was about four feet from the edge of the ice.
I saw the fellows from the cab puling one guy so I grabbed that
guy's pant leg. That way we were both pulled out.
We went back to the campsite where we'd been working.
We were soaked through and our clothes were freezing to us.
We had to pry them off His fellow workers said Masiowski was
ordered by the Hydro with five other men into hospital at the Hydro
campsite at Whitedog, Ont., 20 miles away.
He refused to go, they said, because he wanted to go home to his
wife and child. Divers were sent down Sunday and the bodies were removed
from the truck. They were flown to a funeral home in Kenora, 15 miles
south. In hospital at Whitedog were Bill Conroy of Sharbot Lake, Ont.,
Gerry Colden of Belleville, Ont., Chris Knowles of Alma, Man., Walter
Borowski of Regina and Norman Wilson whose eastern Ontario address was not
known by his friends. Tozer said that if the lake had been more than 15
feet deep, "There'd have been 16 bodies down there." |
