The County Town of the United Counties of Lanark and Renfrew is situated on the River Tay in the Township of Drummond , Canada West.  The town, seven miles from the Rideau Canal and the Tay , is rendered navigable from that district by six miles of five locks which are capable of admitting barges carrying 80-90 tons.  The distance from Brockville direct is 40 miles, the distance from Brockville by Smith’s Falls, being the stage route, is 47 miles.  Usual stage fair ten shillings.  Population about 2,000.
