The late Mr. McGinnis whose death we merely mentioned last week, was just in the prime of life, being 35 years of age.  He was born in Fitzroy in 1850.  He entered the drug store of Mr. John T. Watt at Arnprior when quite young and shortly afterwards started out as a traveler for that gentleman.  Later on in life he left Mr. Watt and for some years engaged with A. Savage & Son, Montreal, the large soap manufacturer and later to become the trusted agent of Messrs W. Johnston and Co., Montreal, the extensive paint manufacturer with whom he remained up until the time of his demise.  In 1877 Mr. McGinnis married Mathilda McDiarmid, daughter of the late Mr. James McDiarmid and sister of the well known brothers William, Duncan and Robert McDiarmid of Carleton Place, who survive him.  Mr. McGinnis also leaves two brothers and three sisters to mourn his loss:  Miss Maggie McGinnis who resides at Arnprior; Mrs. Thomas Haley at Ferguson’s Falls; Mrs. Richard Haley at Balderson; Mr. John McGinnis, Montana; and Mr. Hector McGinnis, Dakota.  The deceased was ill only but a few days.  He first contracted a cold and although the best medical skill and care was obtained the result proved fatal.  The remains were brought from Toronto to Carleton Place last Wednesday evening and the funeral took place there Thursday morning from his late residence.  Mr. McGinnis was a member of the Masonic order and the fraternity turned out largely for the funeral.  The service of the Order was conducted at the house and at the grave.  At St. James Church, Rev. Mr. Stevenson of Almonte delivered the funeral sermon.  The procession reformed at the church and was followed by a very large number of citizens.  Most all the places of business had the blinds drawn out of respect for the deceased who was highly esteemed by all who knew him for his kindly and gentlemanly conduct and upright dealings at all times.  Mrs. McGinnis has the sympathy of all the community in her sad bereavement.  Carleton Place Herald.

Death of William Graham—As Mr. Graham’s injuries from the fire appeared to be healing, people fondly hoped that he would recover.  On Tuesday morning the citizens were shocked at the intelligence that he was no more.  At the last, congestion of the lungs set in and he speedily succumbed.  The tragic circumstances attending his death drew out public sympathy in a peculiar manner but aside from this his untimely death is lamented for his own worth.  He was a useful citizen and a man of  sterling integrity and was respected by all.  He has at times been a member of the Council and for many years Town Assessor.  He has been a member of the school board for 29 years or more and of late a trustee of that corporation and was one if its best workers.  He was born about two miles from town in 1829 (?) and has been in Smith’s Falls for most of his lifetime.  If any of the anti-Scott Act men are responsible for his death they have much to be sorry for but in the absence of proof it would be unfair to make a direct charge.  Smith’s Falls Correspondent

Shaw—Died, at Perth on Friday evening, 13th Aug., Henry D. Shaw, aged (illegible).

Death of Henry D. Shaw, Esq.—On Sat. morning the community was shocked to learn that on the night previous one of the principal and most respected citizens of Perth, Mr. H. D. Shaw, had been taken away suddenly by death.  The shock was all the greater because it was not known that Mr. Shaw, though not considered a strong man, was afflicted by any dangerous or fatal complaint by which the end might come any moment.  The very evening of his death Mr. Shaw appeared as well and as lively as usual but shortly after midnight it was found that peacefully and quietly he had gone to his long home.  Mr. Shaw was the fourth son of Hon. James Shaw, Smith’s Falls and was born himself in that town in 1833 (?).  From his boyhood up he has been engaged constantly in mercantile pursuits and after considerable experience in other places finally settled down in Perth where for 30 years he had carried on a large and profitable general store business, latterly in partnership with his brother-in-law C.A. Matheson.  Mr. Shaw leaves behind him a wife and four children.  His bereaved partner in life is a daughter of the late Hon. R. Matheson of this town. Mr. Shaw was a public man in many ways and one who warmly supported every enterprise for the advancement of the town.  For many years he had been a member of the town council and up to the time of his death was a member of the Board of Education.  He was a zealous member of the Church of England and politically a staunch Conservative.  Being a man of moral worth and up righteousness in his death the town has lost a good and honest citizen in every sense of the word.
