Warren (or Warres?)—Entered into eternal life at his residence at Bathurst on Tuesday, 19th June, Joseph Warren (or Warres??), a native of County Wexford, aged 77.  The life of the deceased was that of an exemplary Christian  and his death was literally “perfect peace”.  His quiet, modest manner, kind disposition and amiable Christian character endeared him to all.  Truly for him “to Live was Christ and to die was gain”.  The full attendance at the funeral service at St. James Church (Anglican) showed the respect in which he was held by the people, amongst whom the greater part of his life was spent.  His remains were interred in Elmwood Cemetery.  “The Lord gave and the Lord taketh away”.  “Blessed by the man of the Lord”.

On the evening of Saturday, 7th July, after an illness of about a month, Mr. James Purdon of Hibbert, County Huron, passed to his last home.  He was a native of Dalhousie, County Lanark.  He removed from there in 1870 to this place where he lived until he sold his farm and moved to a farm occupied by Robert Laing (?), near Ral - - - ville.  About two months ago he went to Manitoba for the purpose of viewing that country and taking up land if pleased with the prospect but not being favorably impressed he made no purchase and was returning home and had left the metropolis when he began to feel unwell.  He called up a medical man who advised him to go home as soon as possible as his system indicated fever.  After he arrived home it was ascertained that the information given him was true and that he was a victim of the fatal malady typhoid fever.  He succumbed to it at the age of 50 (?) years, just a little over 6 years and 6 months after his wife, leaving a family of four boys and three girls all grown up with the exception of two boys.  The deceased was a very intelligent and well informed man, a good reasoner, and liberal in his views and politics, generous and benevolent in his actions and was widely and favorably known.

Almonte:  To chronicle the death of the aged from time to time is an unavoidable necessity however painful it may be but the painful feelings were intensified when it becomes the duty of the journalist to record the death of the young and promising, as we have to do today in announcing the death of Jas. R Miller.  He is well and widely known from is connection as a clerk in Wylie’s Store. The disease which carried him off was inflammation of the bowels with which his naturally strong and vigorous constitution battled for nearly a fortnight, hope and fear predominating but alas, the disease proved the victor and on Tuesday afternoon at 3:00 the end came and a loving son, affectionate brother, pleasant companion and faithful servant was no more.  His pleasant face and obliging manner will be missed at the store.  The large number of people from this town and country who turned out to attend the funeral which took place yesterday was ample evidence of the high esteem in which he was held by all.  The family and especially the bereaved mother have the sympathy of all.

Lister—Died, at his residence, Perth, on Sunday, 12th Aug., Mr. John Lister, aged 82 (?).

Elsewhere in the newspaper:  One of the oldest residents of our town Mr. John Lister, after a short but sharp illness, died at his residence on Sabbath morning.  Mr. Lister was a native of Dunbar, Scotland where he was born 82 years ago.  He learned the trade of a builder then removed to Edinburgh working there some years when he came with his family to Canada settling in this town in 1841.  He was the builder of many of our best dwellings and stores during his long stay here and for a few years was inspector of local public works in this part of Canada under the McKenzie administration.  He was a staunch Liberal both in Scotland and in Canada and a member of the Presbyterian Church.  He leaves a widow and grown up family.  His remains were followed to Elmwood Cemetery by a large concourse of his late fellow townsmen.

Very seldom is it that a life passes away that deserves a better tribute of remembrance than that of Thomas Coulter, who died on Monday after a few days illness at the age of 52 years, 11 months.  He was born in the vicinity of Clayton and received his education at the village school.  He kept a store in Clayton for several years and for some time did a very lucrative trade.  Having had several reverses in business he sold out his store and started for the gold diggings in British Colombia where he remained for some time and had the usual experiences of miner’s life which he was very fond of retelling.  Becoming dissatisfied with the rough life of a miner with its many attendant privations and hardships, he retraced his steps to the land of his nativity and once more started in business at Clayton this time trying his luck at keeping a hotel which he ran for a few years when he gave it up and shortly afterwards came to Almonte where he has since resided.  He was clerk of the Ramsay Council for some twelve years and when Almonte was incorporated as a town he received the clerkship besides holding the office of the School Board and of the North Lanark Agricultural Society and the performed the duties of these offices with satisfaction to the public and credit to himself.  To those who lived in the warm sunshine of his friendship it is difficult to speak of him without seeming to use the language of indiscriminate eulogy.  Such, however, it were almost impossible to do, for death has neither magnified his virtues nor kindly shrouded his failings.  He was possessed in a high degree of a very social nature and his good humor and kindly ways won for him a host of friends who will for many years to come keep a place in their hearts to his memory.  He leaves a wife and several children to mourn his sudden demise to whom we extend our sincere sympathies.  Almonte Times
