Playfair:  A quiet but interesting event took place in Playfairville on Christmas evening when Mr. Richard Hawkins of Carleton Place was united in marriage to Adelia Beach of this village.  Rev. J. Pletts of Montreal officiated.  The bride for several years has been a constant member and active worker of the Methodist Church and has taken an interested part in every good work that has come to her.  Her discharge of the responsible duties of Sunday School teacher won the deserved esteem of her fellow workers while her place in the various societies and departments of Christian work for which this place is notable was seldom found empty.

Elliott-Abercrombie—Married, at Perth on the 29th ult., by Rev. Ross (?), B.D., Mr. Robert A. Elliott of Burgess to Miss Martha Abercrombie, youngest daughter of Mr. Alexander Abercrombie of the Scotch Line.

Maberly—Mr. Thomas Buchanan of Maberly and Miss Ellen Flemming daughter of Mr. Michael Flemming of S. Sherbrooke were on the 23rd inst., at 4:00 p.m. made “one” in the Methodist Church and in the presence of a considerable umber of our fellow citizens notwithstanding the downpour of rain.  Rev. Mr. Pierce officiated.  When the knot was securely tied and the congratulations, etc., were over the happy couple returned to the home of the bride’s father.

A pleasant event took place on Wednesday, 30th Dec., at the home of Mr. George McFarlane, very interesting to all youths and maidens in the vicinity of Preston Vale.  This was the marriage of Mr. Archibald Gemmell of Goulbourn to Dorcas McFarlane, a well known and popular young lady of the neighborhood.  The ceremony was performed by Rev. Mr. Stilwell, Methodist minister in the church.  Miss Sarah McFarlane, sister of the bride, acted as bridesmaid and the groom was supported by his brother William Gemmell.  Before the ceremony began and while the gathering were awaiting the bride and groom, Mrs. Stilwell tendered selections on the organ with brilliant execution.

McIlraith-Noble—Married, at Darling on the 15th Jan., by Rev. J. S. McIlraith, brother of the bridegroom, Mr. Stewart McIlraith to Miss Lizzie Noble, both of Lanark Village.

A very pleasant event took place on Wednesday afternoon 13th Jan., at the residence of Mrs. Coghlan, North Street being the marriage of Mr. George Bolton of Newboro to Miss Mary A. McEwen, a well known and highly respected young lady of this town.  The ceremony was performed by Rev. Mr. Coleman.  The bride was dressed in a beautiful travel suit of fawn cloth and looked very charming.  The presents were numerous and valuable.  The happy couple left on the east bound train for a trip to Ottawa and other parts east.

The marriage of Samuel W. Miller of Sarnia to Elisabeth A. Holt, daughter of Mr. Francis Holt of Sarnia Township was performed in St. George’s Church, Sarnia on Wednesday evening, 13th inst., in the presence of the immediate relatives of the contracting parties.  The ceremony was performed by Rev. T.R. Davis, incumbent of the church.  The bridesmaid was Rebecca Holt, sister of the bride.  The best man was J.R. Logan of Toronto.  After the ceremony a luncheon was served at the residence of James Watson after which the happy couple took the Erie Express for the east.  Among the many handsome wedding presents were a silver tea set from Isaac Miller of Texas, brother of the groom.  Mr. Miller, the groom, was an old resident of Lanark and his parents still reside here.

Fallbrook:  A deeply interesting event took place in our village on Wednesday evening, 27th Jan., when Eliza Kerr was united in marriage to Mr. William T. Cumming of McKeller, Parry Sound District.  This happy union has however its “tother” side by which we lose in Mrs. Cumming a bright and active worker from our midst.  In the Methodist Church of which she was a member and in the various affiliated societies of young people her absence will be felt.

On Wednesday, 13th Feb., Archibald McPhail, Brandon, Manitoba, only son of the respected Reeve of Lavant, and Mary McDougall, daughter of Mr. Alexander McDougall, Poland, Dalhousie, were united in marriage by Rev. Mr. McIlroy, Presbyterian pastor.  A great number of valuable presents were received by the bride.

We copy the notice from the Pembroke Observer of the 12th Feb.  The gentleman Is a young and well known farmer of Drummond and the bride who is the daughter of one of Pembroke’s leading citizens, S.E. Mitchell, was one of the popular young ladies of that town.  The bridal couple arrived in Drummond on Saturday from their wedding tour to Montreal, etc.  “One of those social events which always cause a flutter in society circles came off under most auspicious circumstances at the residence of S.E. Mitchell, Esq., our police magistrate last night when his second daughter Mary E. Mitchell was united in marriage to Peter M. Campbell, of Perth.  Rev. John Scanlon, Methodist minister performed the ceremony, the groom being supported through the trying ordeal by James Armour, B.A. and the bride by her sister Miss M. Louise.  The bride and bridesmaid were attired in fawn tweed traveling suits.  The happy couple took the midnight express for Montreal where they will spend a few days visiting friends.  Miss Mitchell has always been one of our most popular young ladies and the universal esteem in which she is held made her the recipient of one of the most numerous and valuable array of wedding presents ever received by any bride here.  A circle of relatives of both the bride and groom to the number of 40 sat down to a most sumptuous repast and all went merry as a marriage bell until train time when separation was necessary.”

Miller-Jordan—Married, at the residence of the bride’s father at Christie’s Lake on the 24th Feb., by Rev. James Ross, B.D., Mr. George Miller of the 3rd Concession Bathurst to Miss Charlotte Jordan, eldest daughter of Mr. George Jordan.

Port Elmsley:  A very interesting event took place on Wed., 17th Feb., namely the marriage of Hattie Moore, youngest daughter of Mr. William Moore of this place in St. Mary’s Church and was performed by Rev. Mr. Coleman in the presence of a large number of friends.  The bride was becomingly attired and looked handsome as she was led to the altar by her father.  The choir sang “The Voice That Breathed O’er Eden” at the conclusion of the ceremony.  The bridal party were driven to the residence of the bride’s father where a few of the friends met to enjoy the evening.  (transcriber’s note, I had to read this twice, but sure enough, no mention of the groom!)

Williams, Outerbridge, Mr. William Joseph Armstrong of Vernon and Landsdowne, son of Henry Armstrong, Esq., Lanark, to Miss Ada Virginia Brinkman, daughter of Mr. Henry Brinkman, Esq., Montpelier, Ohio.

Middleville—The house of William Yuill was the scene of a joyous and festive event on Wednesday night, 9th March, the crowning event of the occasion being the marriage of Samuel Yuill to Bella Somerville.  The Rev. Mr. Stilwell of Clayton tied the nuptial knot.  The bride and bridegroom were ably assisted by Alexander Yuill and Kate Somerville.  The bride was the recipient of many useful and handsome presents.  A large number of friends and relatives were present.  After the marriage ceremony the company sat down to a gorgeous meal.  Supper being over Mr. Stilwell made a few remarks.  The young ladies and gentlemen did not disperse until an early hour the next morning, having enjoyed themselves in the fascinating pleasures of country dance.

One of those pleasing events which tends to excite social interest took place at the home of Mrs. Porter, Wilson Street, Perth on Wed., 20th April at 11:00 being the occasion of the marriage of her youngest daughter Jessie to Albert E. Manning of Toronto.  The bride was becomingly attired in a traveling suite of grey tweed.  The marriage ceremony was solemnized by Rev. W. G. Henderson in the presence of a number of intimate friends of the contracting parties.  After the ceremony the company repaired to the dining room where full justice was done to a sumptuous wedding breakfast.  The bride received a number of handsome and useful presents showing the esteem in which she is held.  Congratulations were received from east and west.  The young couple left on the 1:47 train amidst a shower of rice and the good wishes of their friends for their future happiness.  After spending a few days in Peterboro and Whitby they will go to Toronto where they will make their home.

Watson-Olson—Married, at Calgary on Wed., 16th March, by Rev. R.A. Munro, Mr. Harry A. Watson of Pine Creed to Miss Annie Olson, eldest daughter of Mr. Louis Olson of Fredericksburgh, Norway.

The home of Mrs. Richardson of Drummond was made the scene of a very pleasant time on Wednesday evening by the marriage of her daughter Maggie to James Dodds.  The Rev. Mr. Colclough of Zion Church Lanark, conducted the marriage service.

Maberly:  Our quiet little village was unusually excited on the evening of the 27th April.  Several of our most amiable citizens were seen wending their way to the English Church.  Teams arrived bearing smiling lads and lassies; guns were fired.  After half an hour all emerged from the church looking unusually happy.  Presently and on the spur of the moment teams were in readiness.  All amidst the firing of guns, they made their exit from the village in like manner as they had come.  Enquiry made it certain that Thomas Duffey and Minnie Hughes had in the meantime taken each other for “better or worse” and that Rev. Mr. Hutton had in some mysterious way made them both one.

Daniel Nolan, of Smith’s Falls, lately conductor of the Perth local train, was married on the 27th April to Mary Lafontaine by Rev. Father Stanton.

On Thursday afternoon of last week Annie G. Campbell, B.A., was married to John Macgillivray, Ph.D., Professor of Languages at Queen’s University.  The marriage was a very quiet one and took place at the residence of the bride’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. John G. Campbell.  The newly married couple then took the train for Montreal on their way to New York where they sailed on Saturday to Amsterdam, Holland.  They intend visiting the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, France and Great Britain, returning in the fall to take up residence in Kingston.

The Brockville Recorder gives the particulars of the marriage of Miss Helen M. Ryan, daughter of our former townsman John Ryan of Brockville to Mr. Alan Macdonnell, a well known contractor of Montreal.  The marriage took place on Tuesday, the 14th inst., at St. Francis Xavier Church by Vicar General Gauthier.  The bridesmaids were Miss Ryan of Prescott, cousin of the bride and daughter of Patrick Ryan, Miss Moren of Prescott and Miss Eddy of Ogdensburg and the groom was supported by a near friend Mr. Myles of Ireland.  Among the invited guests were Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Ryan of Toronto, Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Ryan of Prescott, Mr. and Mrs. J. Austin Smith, Mr. and Mrs. Percival T. Green, relatives of the bride.

The Almonte Gazette contains an extended notice of the marriage of Libbie Grieg and M.J. McFarlane, two of Almonte’s most popular and esteemed young people.  The ceremony was performed by Rev. Mr. Mitchell, Presbyterian minister on Wednesday, 8th June.  The sister and brother of the two, respectively, acted as bridesmaid and groomsman.  The bride is the eldest daughter of the late James Greig, bookseller of Almonte and is a well known vocalist.
