Obituary
The funeral of the late Mrs. William Willoughby of Montague took place yesterday morning and was largely attended. A service was held in the Methodist church at Nolan’s Corners and interment was made in the public cemetery here.
Mrs. Willoughby had only been ill two weeks having been
stricken with paralysis on July 8th and on Monday she breathed her
last. The deceased was a native of
Scotland. Her maiden name was Margaret
Ross and she was 66 years of age. Since
her marriage she has resided in Montague where she was highly esteemed by all
her neighbours and friends. She is
survived by her husband, two sons, Mr. Harry Willoughby of Smiths Falls, and
Christopher at home, and one daughter Mrs. Wesley Willoughby of Alkona, Man.
Died of Shock
Mrs. Francis Duffy of Kingston went down town yesterday morning. When she returned she found her home in flames with the firemen busy in an effort to subdue them. She grew ill at the sight, lost consciousness and expired a few hours later.

Mrs. M. H. Scott
Mrs. Marguerite Helen Scott, formerly Armstrong, of 163 Glenmount Park Road in Toronto, died June 17 after an illness of two months. Mrs. Scott was 74 years of age.
She was born June 4, 1893, in Carleton Place. She was the daughter of John Duncan Armstrong and the former Elizabeth Stewart.
She is survived by sons John, Gerald, Douglas, and Jim and by sisters Zelma and Isabel, both of Toronto.
Mrs. Scott was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian
Church. She rested at the Lannin
Funeral Home until June 19. The
service was held at the Lannin Funeral home with Rev. R. A. Sinclair
officiating. Interment was at the
United Cemetery in Carleton Place.

Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Eldon Jones, who
celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary on Friday evening, at the
hall at Port Elmsley. They were the
recipients of many beautiful gifts.

Gordon Darling
A widely-known Smiths Falls electrical contractor and long-time member of the Rideau Fire-fighter’s Association, Gordon Kilborn Darling, 5 William street east, died suddenly at his home on June 23. He was 54 years of age.
Mr. Darling was born at Oil Springs, Ontario, on September 29, 1912, son of the late William Embury and his wife, the former Sarah Cairns. On April 25, 1931, at Kingston he married the former Mamie Barrett who survives.
Also surviving are his children, Mrs. Frank (Annabelle) Knapp of Westport; Mervyn of Smiths Falls; Mrs. Mervyn (June) McKay of Brockville; Mrs. Malcolm (Lois) Roantree of Gananoque; Donald and Arthur of London; Floyd and Linda at home. A sister, Mrs. Fred Cliff of Inverary and a brother, William, of Geraldton, Ont., also survive. Mr. Darling was a past president (1960-61) of the Eastern Ontario Firefighter’s Association and at the time of his death was employed at International Silver, Perth.
He rested at the Lannin Funeral Home until June 26 when the service was conducted by Rev. Gervis Black of Trinity United Church. Pallbearers were Douglas Dalton, Donald McCracken, Bernard Baker, John LeBarge, Jack Stearns and Bill Jordan. Interment was at Hillcrest Cemetery.
On Sunday evening, a special fireman’s service was held
at the funeral home with firemen from Augusta, Perth, Kitley, Prescott,
Brockville, Carleton Place, Almonte, Gananoque, Pakenham, Kingston, Beckwith,
Lanark, Bathurst and Burgess and Smiths Falls in attendance.
Thomas J. Hogan
A native of Smiths Falls but a resident of the United States for many years, Thomas James Hogan of Chicago, Ill., died suddenly on June 17 as the result of a car accident. He was 68 years of age and had been employed as a truck driver at the time of his death.
Mr. Hogan was born in Smiths Falls in 1899, son of the late Thomas Hogan and his wife, the former Ellen Roseberry. He was educated at Central School and in the early 1920’s moved to Detroit and then to Chicago 18 years ago.
Besides his wife, Lillian, he leaves three sisters, Mrs. M. Droughan of Hamilton; Mrs. M. Dempster of Hamilton; Mrs. K. Williams of Pontiac, Mich.; two brothers Patrick Ross Hogan of Hamilton and Francis Earl Hogan of Smiths Falls.
Requiem Mass for Mr. Hogan was sung at The Seven Holy
Founders church in Calumet Park on June 20.
Laura E. Huddleston
Miss Laura E. Huddleston, RN, well-known Montreal nurse, died Saturday, June 17, at the age of 78 in St. Francis Hospital in Smiths Falls, Ont.
Born near Perth, Ont., she was educated in Perth and took her nursing training at Worcester Training School for Nurses in Worcester, Mass.
Graduated in 1914, she went to Montreal the next year and gave 50 years of dedicated service as a private duty nurse. She served at the Jewish General, the former Montreal Maternity Hospital, the Montreal Neurological Institute and the Ross Memorial Pavilion of the Royal Victoria Hospital.
Respected by her patients and the medical profession, Miss Huddleston’s nursing career took her to Great Britain as well as Canada and the United States.
She is survived by her brother, George Huddleston, of Perth; her sister, Mrs. Edna Dowsett, and her nieces, Mrs. Eileen Haskins and Mrs. James Kerruish, of Smiths Falls, as well as a number of nieces and nephews.
The funeral service was held on Monday, June 19 at St.
John’s Anglican Church at 10:30am in Smiths Falls with interment in Hillcrest

C. C. Macfarlane
Clifford Craig Macfarlane, 97 Jasper avenue, mill manager at Rideau Feeds in Smiths Falls, died suddenly at his home on June 23. He was 56 years of age.
Mr. Macfarlane was born at Clarendon Front, Quebec, on June 19, 1911, son of the late William Wallace Macfarlane and his wife, the former Lila Mackie. On December 30, 1938, at Smiths Falls, he married the former Gladys Margaret Craig, who survives, as do his children, Mrs. Vincent Lee (Jean) Chong of Ottawa and James and Robert of Toronto. Also surviving are his sisters, Isobel of Ottawa, Mrs. A. L. (Dorothy) Thompson of Ottawa, brothers John B. or Hornepayne and William W. of Smiths Falls.
Mr. MacFarlane was an elder at Trinity United Church.
He rested at the Lannin Funeral Home until June 26 when the service was held at Trinity United Church, conducted by Rev. Gervis Black. Pallbearers were Gordon Spooner, Douglas Craig, Clyde McNeely, Arthur Thompson, Jan Schokking and Douglas Wilson.
Interment was at Hillcrest Cemetery.
Mrs. E.C. McKay
A widely-known and respected citizen of Smiths Falls, Mrs. E. C. McKay, 26 McGill street south, died on June 22 at Smiths Falls Public Hospital after an illness of only two days. She was in her 82nd year.
Mrs. McKay was the former Olive Margaret Beatty and was born in Pembroke on October 18, 1885, daughter of the late Walter Beatty and his wife, the former Jeannie Elizabeth Angus. On October 26, 1911, at Pembroke, she married Ernest C. McKay. She had been a resident of Smiths Falls for the past 40 years and was active in the IODE, the Public Hospital Auxiliary as well as church associations.
Besides her husband, she is survived by her children, Mrs. Bruce Colville (Jean), Oakville; Angus McKay, Barrie; Weldon McKay, Sudbury; and Douglas McKay, Hamilton.
Mrs. McKay rested at the Amy Funeral Home until June 24 when the service was conducted by Rev. R. A. Sinclair of Westminster Presbyterian Church. Pallbearers were D. W. Boyd, Dr. R. J. Walker, James W. Stewart, S. R. Hambleton, L. V. Heard and A. E. Dobbie. Interment was at Wesley United Cemetery in Pembroke. Honourary bearers were A. M. Davidson, Milton Code, W. J. Doyle, F. B. Marquette, Dr. C. A. Patterson, C. R. Hodge, A. H. Buchanan, Roy Long, Dr. H. W. Kerfoot, Stewart Douglas, W. F. Wilson, Arnold Gough, Dr. A. B. Murphy and Harry Rickerd.
