THOMPSON, Edith Peacefully in hospital, Carleton Place, Ontario on Friday, December 6, 2002 at age 86. Edith Jessie Porter, beloved wife of the late Hubert Dale Thompson. Loving mother of Sherrill (Duncan) Ferguson, Joanne Thacker, Connie (Ronnie) Scott, Dawn (Guy) Carruthers, June (Mark) Kenny and Janice (Ross) Kenny. Predeceased by a daughter Bette McLelland and by a son Dale Thompson. Dear grandmother of 25 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren. Survived by son-in-law Morley McLelland and by daughter-in-law Lyla Lindsay and by sisters-in-law Edna Porter, Grace Thompson and Miriam Craig. Howard Edwin Jackson, beloved husband of Marie (Menard) Jackson and the late Shirley Anne Drynan by first marriage. Loving father of Richard (Christine) Jackson and Wendy J. Jackson. Special "Poppa" of Tim, Christopher, Jason and Guy. Dear brother of George (Lenore) Jackson. Predeceased by his daughter Susan Gotans and by his brother Arnold (late Rena) Jackson. Survived by step-children Ken (Corrin), Gary (Colette), and Cheryl (Richard) and by 6 step-grandchildren. Beloved wife of the late Harold Leslie Fishenden (1990). Dear Mother of May (Lawrence) Sample of Carp; Arthur of RR # 2 Pakenham; Clarence (Bev) Fishenden of RR # 3 Pakenham and Doreen (Bill) Ryan of Pakenham.  Dear grandmother of Larry Sample, Christine (Blair) Medynski and Colleen (Colin) Russell. Great-grandmother of Ryan and Farren Medynski, Caitlyn and Cole Russell. MRS. JENNIE POTTER. (1939) - HAWKESBURY, Sept. 25. (Special) - The death has occurred in Dr. T. W. Smith's private hospital here yesterday of Mrs. Jennie Potter, widow of the late Lee Potter, in her 72nd year. She had been Ill for some time. The former Jennie Comba was born in Pakenham a daughter of the late Richard Comba and his wife, Caroline Steen, both natives of Ireland. Following her education she married her late husband and lived for some time in different Ontario centres. After his death she moved to Hawkesbury and for the past 23 years made her home with a sister, Mrs. D. Seward, and a brother, Thomas Comba, both residing on McGill street south. In addition, a brother, Charles Comba, resides in Toronto , Ont., and Stewart in Oakville . Ont. A sister, Mrs. Gladys Duntley, also lives in Toronto. Also surviving are the following cousins, Gordon, Comba, Herbert Comba, George Comba and Miss Annie Combs, all of Ottawa, Miss Evelyn Bold and Charles Comba, of Pakenham, Mrs. C. Boyd, of Flint, Mich., Mrs. Harvey Baird, of Carleton Place, Allen Comba, Ottawa, and R. Stewart, of Kinburn. Following a service at the house conducted by Rev. Arthur J. Back, pastor of St. Paul's Presbyterian Church, interment will be made in Almonte.


McPHERSON - COMBA  -  Mr. and Mrs. Cameron McPherson of Ottawa, announce the forthcoming marriage of their daughter Heather Eleanor (McPherson), to Michael Edward (Comba), son of Mr. and Mrs. Russell Comba of Ottawa.  The wedding will take place Saturday, June 19, 1971, at 4:30 p.m. in Woodroffe United Church, Woodroffe Avenue, Ottawa.


The Late William H. Comba. A tall athletic young man of Arnprior - Wm. H. Comba - has been carried off by typhoid fever. Death came today, after an illness which began far back as June last. After struggling against the disease until about the end of August the patient felt well enough to leave his bed, but he left it too early and a relapse set in and he went back to the sick chamber to remain until November 8th ‑ the day of his death. Deceased had spent four years in Arnprior working at his trade‑harness making. He came to Arnprior from Almonte, to which town his remains were taken for burial The funeral took place Tuesday afternoon from the home of his parents in Almonte to the 8th line cemetery, Ramsay. Services were conducted by Rev. Mr. Edwards, pastor of the Methodist Church . Floral tributes were numerous and in character were exceptionally rich. Deep sympathy is felt for the father and mother, brothers and sisters, who were doomed to dwell in anxiety so long and finally see their loved one pass away.


Obit. - Cornelius Comba - Cornelius Comba died on Tuesday afternoon at his home on Hugh street north , Arnprior, and his demise was a surprise to those who knew him. He had not been well for same months but on his death, and for days previously, he walked up street and chatted with old friends as was his wont. On Tuesday afternoon he complained of feeling weak and a few minutes after lying down he calmly passed away. The late Cornelius Combs was born at Cedar Hill near Pakenham village, about 75 Years ago, and he followed the occupation of a farmer. On October 8th, 1862 , he took for a wife Miss Eliza Dunfield, also of Cedar Hill. They tilled the soil and wrought together until fifteen years ago when they came to Arnprior to make their home and here they have since resided. Besides Mrs. Comba, nine children survive, namely: Wesley of Pakenham, Alfred and Wellington of Winnipeg; Minor of Killarney , Man. ; Herbert and Allen of Calumet; Gordon of Ottawa; Mrs. W. O'Brien and Miss Comba of Arnprior. Chas. Comba, of Almonte, John Comba, of Pakenham and Thos. Comba of Cedar Hill, are brothers, and Mrs. S. McDowell and Mrs. D. Shaw of Pakenham are sisters. FUNERAL HELD OF MURRAY R. COMBA - Veteran of Last War Interred  In Auld Kirk . - Following a lengthy illness in a veterans' hospital in Victoria, B. C., Murray R. Comba, a veteran of the last war, died on Saturday, Dec. 19. Born at Pakenham in 1897, he came to Almonte when the family took up residence here In the same year and received his education at local schools. In 1915 he placer mined in Northern British Columbia with his brother, Geo. L. Comba of Almonte. In the winter of 1915 he enlisted with the 73rd Regiment R.C.H. under the late Major J. MacIntosh Bell and served with distinction in France . He was wounded on the Somme and was decorated for conspicuous bravery in bringing in his machine gun alone after the entire crew became casualties. When the 73rd regiment was broken up he was attached to the 42nd machine gun brigade in which unit he was again decorated for courage during the heavy fighting around Passchendaele during which he received wounds when the entire machine gun crew were casualties. As a result of this, he remained in hospital for nearly two years. On his discharge in 1920 he was engaged with the Canadian Steamship Company at Montreal , St. John's , and Halifax . In December, 1937 as the result of his old injuries he underwent an amputation operation of  his right leg, from which he never recovered. Since 1938 he made his home at Vancouver and Victoria, B. C. Mr. Comba never married but leaves four sisters and four brothers: Mrs. A. Lamourie of North Bay ; Mrs. K. Morton of Crugmyle, Alta.; Mrs. David Bank in Trenton , N. J.; Mrs., E. Zarella, Philadelphia: Thomas Comba of North Bay: Chas. Of Calgary ; William, Port Arthur and Geo. L. Comba, Almonte.  The body was brought east to Almonte to the home of his brother. Mr. G. L. Comba, Church Street , where the funeral service will be held on Thursday. Dec. 24, at 2 p.m. Burial will be in the Auld Kirk Cemetery .


COMBA, Gemmill Wesley - In hospital in Vancouver . B.C. on Saturday, Feb. 14. 1976. Gemmill Wesley Comba in his 81st year. Beloved husband of the late Bessie Jackman, dear father of Stewart, Carleton Place , Joan (Mrs. William Collie) Appleton, Beverley (Mrs. Ronald Salisbury) London, Ontario. Dear brother of Mervyn, Vancouver; Howard, Kirkland Lake; Violet (Mrs. Percy Hawkins) Pembroke; Tillie (Mrs. Clinton Drader) Carleton Place, Jessie (Mrs. Jardine Dey), Ottawa, Marjorie (Mrs. Jack Delahunt), Ottawa ; also survived by three grandchildren. Gem Comba Dies - Funeral services for a well known Carleton Place man Gemmill C. Comba, will  be held Thursday at St. James Anglican Church at 2 p.m. He died last Saturday in a Vancouver hospital on his way home from a holiday in Hawaii . He was 80. Mr. Comba, a former Carleton Place businessman, was a member of the town council and of Lanark County Council, before serving a Mayor of Carleton Place from 1957 to 1959. He served overseas in the First World War. He was a life member of the Masonic Order, a zone commander off the Royal Canadian Legion, the president of the 100 Club and chairman of Carleton Place Businessmen's Association.


COMBA, Bessie - In hospital, in Carleton Place , Ont., on Saturday, March 24, 1973, Bessie Jackman, beloved wife of Gemmill W. Comba, dear mother of Stewart, Carleton Place; Joan (Mrs. William Collie Jr.), Appleton; Beverley (Mrs. Ronald Salisbury), Oakville. Also survived by three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Mrs. Comba was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Albert Jackman of Torquay, Devon , England . Resting at the Alan R. OBITUARY - JAMES SAMUEL NEEDHAM - The death of Mr. James Samuel Needham of Pakenham occurred at the Almonte Nursing Home on Tuesday, January 16, 1973 . He was 85. Mr. Needham was born on January 11, 1888 . a son of the late Henry Needham and Agnes McKibbon. He had been a farmer in the Pakenham area, a member of St. Mark's Anglican Church, and of the Pakenham Oddfellow's Lodge. He was predeceased by two brothers and two sisters, John, William Henry, Allie and Lizzie. The funeral was held on, January 19, from the Comba Funeral Home, Almonte, with burial at St. Mark's Cemetery, Rev. Roberts conducted the funeral services. Pallbearers were Carl Fisher, Gordon Dool, Stewart McCann, Nelson Sadler, Herb Timmins and Borden McGill.


MRS. G. W. COMBA - Final tribute was paid to Mrs. Bessie (Jackman) Comba at her funeral, which took place on Tuesday, March 27, 1973 . from the Alan R. Barker Funeral Home, McArthur Ave., Carleton Place, where the service was held in the Chapel at 3 p.m. with Rev. F. A. McGregor of St. James' Anglican Church officiating. Interment was in St. James Cemetery . Mrs. Comba, who had resided at 38 McArthur Avenue , passed away on Saturday, March 24, in the Carleton Place and District Memorial Hospital , following a period of ill health. Born in Torquay, Devon , England , the former Bessie Jackman, she was a daughter of the late Albert Jackman and his wife, the late Cecelia Mogridge. She was married In Torquay in 1918 to Gemmill W. Comba, well‑known retired businessman of Carleton Place . She was educated in England and attended St. James Anglican Church. Mrs. Comba was very active in community affairs, being a past president of the Carleton Place Rowing Club, the Mississippi Golf Club and the Ladies' Auxiliary of the Chamber of Commerce. She was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Almonte Chapter; Mississippi Rebekah Lodge and the Ottawa Shrine Club. Her greatest hobby was antique collecting. Besides her husband, she is survived by a son, Stewart, of Carleton Place ; two daughters, Joan (Mrs. William Collie, Jr.), of Appleton and Beverley (Mrs. Ronald Salisbury), of Oakville ; three grandchildren and three great grandchildren. The pallbearers were Messrs. R. V. McCarten, Rollin Saunders, Roy McKittrick, Howard McNeely, Col. C. M. Elms1ey and Jim Moffat, C.P. Canadian.


Pakenham News - (Continued from page three)  Emma Louise Wood.  The death occurred in Carleton Place Memorial Hospital on Monday, July 20, 1970 , of Mrs. Alexander Wood, the former Emma Louise Gower, after a lengthy illness. She was 74. Born on May 20,4696 , in Woodbridge , Ontario , she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Norman Gower of Lawson , Saskatchewan . She left Woodbridge at an early age and went to Regina with her parents. They then mov­ed onto the homestead near Lawson. She received her education at Central Butte , Saskatchewan . She remained on the homestead until her marriage to Alex Wood on November 28, 1917 , in Central Butte . Mr. and Mrs. Wood then moved to Lawson until 1936, when they came east and have resided in Pakenham ever since. She was a member of St. Andrew's United Church Pakenham, and Lawson Rebekah Lodge, No. 81. Along with her husband, she is survived by three daughters, Thelma (Mrs. C. W. Atkinson), Trenton , Margaret (Mrs. Percy Timmins), Pakenham; and Lois (Mrs. John Wishak), North Bay ; one brother, James Gower, Winnipeg , Manitoba ; 12 grandchildren and one great grand-child. Three sisters and five brothers predeceased her. The body rested at the Comba Funeral Home, Almonte, where service was conducted on Wednesday, July 22, by Rev. H. A. Davies. Burial was in Pakenham United Cemetery. Pallbearers were five grandsons and one nephew: Allen Timmins, Ronald Timmins, Bob Atkinson, Gary Wishak, Peter Wishak and Richard Wood.


Curtis Rites On Tuesday ( March 9, 1970 ) - Funeral service for Mrs. Mary Louise (Gower) Curtis, 79, of 1034 Connaught and Lawson, will be in the W. J. Jones and Son Chapel Thursday, at 1 p.m. Mrs. Curtis died Monday. Born in Woodbridge , Ont.. in 1891, she came to Regina in 1903, marrying Frederick Curtis in Regina in 1908, moving to Lawson in 1913, she resided at Smeaton, from 1932 to 1951 when she returned to Lawson, where she has since resided except for the past few winters which she spent in Moose Jaw . She was a member of the United Church and the Rebekah Lodge No. 81 of Lawson. She was predeceased by her husband Frederick in 1951, a son and a daughter. She is survived by two daughters: Mrs. Doug (Francis) Caldwell , of Lawson, Mrs. Raymond (Blanche) Yeo) in B. C.; and a son Douglas Curtis of Calgary ; eight grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, a sister, Mrs. Alex (Louise) Wood of Ont.; a brother, James Gower of Winnipeg, Manitoba, and several nieces and nephews.


CURTIS - Passed away suddenly at Craik , Saskatchewan , on Monday, March 9, 1970 , Mrs. Mary Louise (Gower) Curtis, age 79 years, of 1034 Connaught Avenue , Moose Jaw . And Lawson , Saskatchewan . The funeral service will be held in the W. J. Jones and Son Chapel on Thursday, March 12, at 1:00 p.m. The Rev. Gordon Duncan, Minister of the Central Butte United Church , will officiate and interment will follow in the family plot at the Prince Albert cemetery.


OBITUARY - THE LATE ALEX. WOOD  The death of Mr. Alexander Lindsay Wood occurred suddenly at his home at Pakenham on Wednesday, October 11, 1972 . He was 81. Mr. Wood was a native of Pakenham, being born there on May 28, 1891 , a son of James Wood and his wife, Elizabeth Gray. He was a barber by trade and went west at the age of 18, where he barbered at Lawson , Sask. , for several years. He was married at Central Butte , Sask. , on November 28, 1917 . to the former Louise Gower, who predeceased him on, July 20 1970 . Following a period of ill health, Mr. Wood returned to Pakenham in 1936. He was a member of Pakenham United Church , Alba Lodge, I.O.O.F., Pakenham and the Pakenham Curling Club. He as a veteran of World War I, enlisting at Regina . He is survived by three daughters, Thelma (Mrs. Charles Atkinson) of Trenton , Ont.; Margaret (Mrs. Percy Timmins) of Pakenham, and Lois (Mrs. John Wishak), North Bay ; 12 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Also surviving are three brothers, Boyd, Loon Lake , Sask. ; William, Detroit , Mich. , and Cecil of Stittsville, and two sisters, Libby, Mrs. Bob Secular, North Battleford , Sask. , and Fannie, Mrs. Ira Smith of Pakenham, one brother, Herb. is deceased. The funeral was held on Saturday October 14th, at 2.30 p.m. from the Comba Funeral Home, Church street , Almonte, to the United Cemetery at Pakenham for burial. Rev. Dodds of Pakenham United Church conducted the service. Pallbearers were fiver grandsons and a nephew, AIlen and Ronald Timmins, Gary and Peter Wishak, Robert Atkinson and Dick Wood.
