Dana Drummond

Almonte mother was such a lovely person'

BY DON CAMPBELL

An Almonte mother of three spent the final afternoon of her life doing one of the things she cherished: volunteering on a field trip with her youngest son, Travis, and the rest of his Carambeck Public School kindergarten class that was visiting a nearby farm. Dana Drummond, 32, was known at Carambeck as a supportive parent who was quick to volunteer whenever asked. She was almost as excited as the children about the visit to Valley View Farms. The news that Mrs. Drummond had been killed late Wednesday afternoon when her minivan collided with a school bus hit the Carleton Place School hard. Her son Trevor's Grade 1 class spent yesterday writing letters of sympathy to their friend. "She was such a positive parent; said Carambeck principal Harry Baker, who spoke to Trevor's classmates.”The thought of not seeing her around, with her baby in tow, is almost impossible to comprehend. She was just such a lovely person." Mrs. Drummond finished up with the field trip about an hour before the accident and headed back to Almonte to pick up 11-month-old daughter Katrina at a babysitter's. Katrina sat safely in her car seat as her mother drove west on Perth Street. But when she attempted to cross Highway 15, she inexplicably pulled out into the path of the school bus, driven by family friend Cathy Toshack. The impact crushed the driver's portion of the Drummond vehicle and sent the school bus toppling onto its side. Fortunately, it carried no passengers. Neither Katrina nor Mrs. Toshack, were seriously injured. Mrs. Drummond was pronounced dead at Almonte Hospital. The first Mississippi Mills firefighter on the scene was David Drummond, uncle of Mrs. Drummond's husband, Al. Mr. Drummond's twin brother Gibb, also a captain with the fire department, was not far behind. Dana Drummond was killed in crash shortly after picking up her baby from the sitter's. The child was not seriously injured  "You spend 30 years on the rescue trucks and you think you're so hardened and so use to death you can handle any situation," said Gibb Drummond "Well, you can never be prepared when you come upon one of your own. ”She was a good loving mother and can you say anything better about anyone? That was her. She loved her children at she had a million-dollar smile
