Newly-Weds Honored 1939 Charlie and Blanche Woods
The young people of
Prestonvale gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Woods on Friday evening,
June 16th, for a social time and wieners. During the evening a rug was presented
and the following address read, to which each made a fitting response.

Petty Officer and His Bride Are Honored 1941
McCleverty - Cousins
Cornwall Township Hall was the
scene of a very enjoyable social evening, recently, when a large gathering of
friends of Petty Officer and Mrs. Joseph McCleverty met to honor them on the
occasion, of their marriage on October 25. Prior to her marriage Mrs. McCleverty
was Miss Gladys Cousins, teacher of Eamer's Corners School. The evening was
spent in dancing. A pleasant part of the program was the presentation to Mrs.
McCleverty of a purse of money by Charles Johnston, and by Mrs. N. Alguire of
some Spode china on behalf of the Senior Branch of the Women's Instigate. Mrs.
Robert Esdale, on behalf of the Junior Branch, presented her with other pieces
of Spode china. Mrs. Thomas Carpenter, on behalf of the War Emergency branch,
presented Petty Officer McCleverty with a Christmas parcel. An address was read
by Miss Helen Alguire to Mr. and Mrs. McCleverty, extending to them the best
wishes and congratulations of the various groups joining in the presentations.
Both replied in a few, appropriate words expressing their pleasure and
appreciation of the gifts. After
the serving of refreshments dancing continued for the remainder of the evening

In honor of Miss Ethel
Guthrie, one of this month's popular brides, a delightfully arranged picnic
supper was given last evening by the Misses Charlotte Whitton, Margaret Greer
and Stella Hamilton. The guest of honor was presented with a handsome fitted
picnic hamper from those present.
Bride-to-Be Honored, 1941 Miss Gladys Burns
A very pleasant evening was
spent at the home of Mr. and Mrs. James M. Scott, 55 Main street east, Smiths
Falls, when Mrs. Scott was hostess at a shower given to her sister, Miss Gladys
Burns, an October bride. As Miss Burns entered the drawing room, which was
decorated with pink and white streamers, thirty guests sang "For She's a
Jolly Good Fellow." Progressive euchre and Chinese checkers were played,
Miss Freda Gilchrist winning first prize for euchre, Miss Veronica Bissonette
the consolation prize and Alice Acheson winning first prize for Chinese checkers
and Doreen Scott the consolation. Miss Mary Acheson and Miss Edna Chaplin
wheeled in a little wagon decorated with pink and white paper laden with
beautiful gifts. After the bride opened the gifts she expressed her thanks in a
few well chosen words. A dainty luncheon was served. Assisting were Miss Laura
Gilchrist, Mrs. Russell White and four teachers, Misses Morna Cameron, Isobel
Acheson, Matilda McLenaghan and Jessie Scott. The guests wished Miss Burns every
success and happiness in her new home and took their departure.
HONOR BRIDE-ELECT 1937 Hazel Graham
MERRICKVILLE, Ont., Sept. 29,
- Special - Mrs. John and Miss Edith Davies were joint hostesses at a kitchen
shower at their home at Burritt's Rapids last night in honor of Miss Hazel
Graham, of Merrickville, whose marriage takes place early in October. About 35
ladies were present and the rooms were tastefully decorated with cut flowers and
pink streamers. A feature of the evening was a treasure hunt, when the
bride-to-be found numerous gifts. Later, Master Neil Derrick wheeled a decorated
carriage laden with gifts into the room and presented them to the guest of honor,
who expressed appreciation for the gifts. Refreshments were served by the
hostesses assisted by Mrs. C. Morris, of Ottawa and Miss Marion Graham, of
Merrickville.

MERRICKVILLE, Ont., Sept. 28.
– Special - Mrs. Russell McRae (nee Ella Murray) whose marriage took place
recently was guest of honor at a social evening held at the home of her parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Murray, at Burritt's Rapids Monday evening. Contests, games
and music were enjoyed. Winners of the contests were Miss Mary MacDonald and
Mrs. McRae. Master Teddy Murray and Cecil Weir wheeled in a decorated carriage
laden with gifts which were presented to the bride. Mrs. McRae, after opening
the parcels, thanked her friends. Later, refreshments were served by Miss Hilda
Balance, Miss Muriel Hyland, Miss Ada Green, Mrs. Harold Young, and Miss, Grace
Murray. Tea was poured by Misses Marion Hyland and Mary McDonald
Altar Lugsdin-Clement 1937
Decorated with autumn flowers
and bitter sweet, St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church was the scene of a pretty
wedding on Saturday when Mary Elizabeth, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. P. W. Clement,
was married to Mr. Harvard Lawrence Lugsdin, only son of Mrs. Lugsdin and the
late J. Harvey Lugsdin of Toronto. The bride, given in marriage by her father,
wore a white suede lace gown, the long graceful lines of the skirt forming a
slight fan shaped train. Her matching hat was in halo style, and she carried, an
arm bouquet of white Killarney roses. She was attended by Miss Kathleen Clement,
her sister, wearing a gown of cocktail red Beulah lace with matching
accessories. She carried a bouquet of Pernet roses. The groom was attended by
Mr. John F. Rothwell of Toronto, while Mr. William Clement of Perth, and Mr.
Earle Duffy of Winchester, acted as ushers.
Rev. H. A. Berlis of St.
Andrew's Presbyterian Church officiated, and Miss Rose Peck of Toronto was at
the organ. During the signing of the register Mrs. W. A. Davidson sang
"Because." Following the
ceremony a reception was held at the Imperial Hotel, The tables were decorated
with tall pink tapers in crystal candelabras, which lit up the attractively
arranged' T-shaped bridal table. Pink and white roses were effectively arranged
down the centre. The mother of the bride received wearing a gown of phlox French
sheer with a corsage of orchids. She was assisted by the groom's mother Mrs.
Lugsdin wearing a gown of hunters' given velvet with corsage of Johanna Hill
roses. Later Mr. and Mrs. Lugsdin
left on a motor trip to New York City, the bride travelling in a latour blue
dress, coat trimmed with Persian lamb and matching hat. On their return they
will live in Toronto.
Marriage Hutton - Saunders
A quiet but pretty wedding
took place at noon Wednesday, September 17th, at the house of Mr. and Mrs.
William Hutton, when the Rev. J. G. Joyce officiated at the marriage of their
second daughter, Amey Alexandria, to Harold Russell, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs.
J. H. Saunders, of Prospect. The bride, who was given in marriage by her father,
was attired in a light cocoa gown of crepe gloria with shoes and hose to match.
The rooms were tastefully decorated for the occasion with autumn flowers. After
the ceremony the immediate relatives, who numbered about thirty, retired to the
dining room, where a buffet luncheon was served. After receiving the good wishes
of those present, the bride and groom left on a motor trip to Rhode Island,
where they will spend a time with the bride's sister, Mrs. F. R. Warden, and Dr.
Warden. The bride travelled in a dress of pale green silk crepe, brown broadcloth
coat; with Siberian fox trimming and hat and shoes to match. Upon their return
the couple will reside at Prospect where the groom is a prosperous young farmer
Marriage Learoyd – Strong 1929
A very quiet wedding was
solemnized in St. Paul's Anglican Church, Toronto, at 8:30 p.m. on March 31, of
Marjorie, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry J. Strong, of Perth, Ont., to Lyall A.
Learoyd, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. A. G. Learoyd, of Ottawa.
Rev. G. D. Lightbourn officiated. The bride was becomingly gowned
in porcelain blue French crepe, with hat and shoes of navy. They were attended
by Misses Billie Strong, sister of the bride, and Dr. Robert J. E. Hanna, both
of Perth

Sept 1937 Allison - Clow
Mr. and Mrs. H. P. Allison and
Mr. Charles Allison of town and Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Davies of Burritt's Rapids
were guests yesterday at the marriage of their son, Mr. Arthur Allison, to Miss
Clow, of Kingston. The ceremony took place in Zion Church and the reception was
held in the Lasalle Hotel, Kingston.
Marriage 1933 Atyeo - MacMartin
A very quiet but pretty
wedding took place in the Delta United Church, Hamilton, on Saturday, December
thirtieth when Maxie Olga, elder daughter of Mrs. F. D. MacMartin and the late
F. D. MacMartin of Smiths Falls was united in marriage to Mr. Samuel Delos Atyeo,
Vineland. Mauve and yellow mums against a bank of ferns made an effective setting
for the bridal party. The bride who was given in marriage by her mother, wore a
princess style gown of orchid transparent velvet with hat and shoes to match.
She carried orchids and talisman roses. Mrs. E. C. Gliddon, cousin of the bride,
was matron of honour wearing pale blue satin and carried pink and white mums.
Miss Phyllis MacMartin, sister of the bride was bridesmaid; she wore yellow lace
with pink velvet hat and shoes and carried yellow and white mums. Dr. E. C. Gliddon attended
the groom. During the signing of the register
Mrs. Lee sang very sweetly "U Promise Me" The ushers were Mr. Ivan
Frety of Buffalo, cousin of the groom; and Mr. Alden MacMartin of Smiths Falls,
brother of the bride. Rev. Mr. Johnston assisted by Rev. Mr. Pipher of Vineland
were the officiating clergymen. After the ceremony a reception was held at the
Corner House Tea Rooms where the bride's mother received the guests. Her gown
was of beige lace with dark brown trimmings and accessories. Miss Pauline Kerr,
Belleville, niece of the groom caught the bride's bouquet. The bride travelled
in green triple sheer crepe and lace with seal coat and green accessories. After
a brief honeymoon the bride and groom will reside in Vineyard
Alter Badour - O'Neil 1933
St. Edward's Church, Westport,
where the parents of both the bride and groom were married, was he centre of
exceptional interest on Monday, September 26th, at nine o'clock, when Miss
Marion Ruth, O’Neil, of Hamilton, only daughter of Mr. S. D. 0,'Neil, of
Detroit, Mich., and the late Mrs. O'Neil, was united in marriage to Leo
Alphonse Badour, son of Mr. and Mrs. L. J. Badour, of Ferguson's Falls. Reverend
Father Corrigan performed the ceremony. The bride entered the church to the
strains of the wedding march, played by the organist, Sister M. St. John, and
during the Mass appropriate hymns were rendered by the choir. The bride was
attractively gowned in forget-me-not blue sheer chiffon over taffeta. Her veil
of blue, arranged from a ribbon coronet was shoulder length. She carried a
bouquet of Sweetheart Roses and maiden hair fern. Miss Mary M. Stack, of
Hamilton, attended the bride, dressed in shell pink sheer, taffeta trimmed, with
matching halo hat and veil. Her bouquet was of Premier roses. The groom was ably
assisted by Mr. Andrew McGarry, of Perth. The sanctuary of the church was very
beautifully decorated with gladioli, asters and other flowers of the season.
Following the ceremony a wedding breakfast was served at the Lexena Hotel,
Westport, to sixty guests. The tables were prettily decorated, one being centred
with the bride's cake. The bride was a popular teacher on the staff of the
Hamilton Separate Schools. The many beautiful gifts received testified to the
esteem in which the bride and groom are held. Immediately after the reception,
the bride and groom left by motor for Gananoque, Ivy Lea, crossing the new
Thousand Island Bridge, Watertown, Oswego and various other points in New York
State. The bride travelled in a fox trimmed navy suit with a matching Parisian
model hat and navy accessories. The groom's gift to the bride was a pendant, to
the bridesmaid a gold and sapphire rosary, and to the best man pearl cuff links.
On their return Mr. and Mrs. Badour will reside, at Fergusons Falls.
Guests were present from
Detroit, Hamilton, Toronto, Fergusons Falls, Perth, Toledo, Stanleyville and
Westport. Among those from a distance were Mr. S. D. O'Neil, Detroit, Misses
Mary M. Stack and Eva E. Commerford, of Hamilton, and Misses Loretta and
Margaret? of Toronto.
A very pretty wedding took
place at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Cowles yesterday morning when their
daughter, Keitha Pearl became the bride of F. William Barker, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Francis Barker, of Lombardy. The ceremony was performed by Rev. Dr. Jas.
Semple, pastor of the United Church and numerous friends and relatives of the
young couple were present for the event. The bride looked charming in a pretty
gown of apple green with blonde shoes, hose and hat to match. She carried a
shower bouquet of Ophelia roses, sweet peas and maidenhair fern. She was
attended by Miss Laura Hicks who was lovely in a gown of sand flat crepe with
shoes and hose to match, also wearing a fox fur. The groom was attended by Mr.
Seymour Keir. The groom's gift to the bride was a silver fox fur, to the
bridesmaid an amethyst pendant and to the groomsman a pair of gold, Masonic cuff
links. Immediately, after the ceremony a reception was held when a buffet lunch
was served to the immediate friends and relatives of the young couple. The rooms
were prettily decorated in white with flowers also being effectively used in the
decorations. The table was centred with the wedding cake which was cut by the
bride. The toast to the bride and the groom was, proposed by Rev. Dr. Semple and
the groom responded in a few well chosen words. Afterwards the young couple left
for Montreal on their honeymoon, the bride travelling in a navy blue suit, sand
hat with shoes and purse to match. The young, couple were the recipients of many
beautiful and useful gifts. The bride, who was employed in Montreal until
recently, was tendered a shower on her departure when many girl friends
assembled to present dainty gifts including a beautiful table lamp, by fellow
workers in the office in which she was employed. Mr. and .Mrs. Barker have been
very popular in Smiths Falls and their popularity was indeed evident in the
large number present to witness the ceremony. At the station, the young people
were showered with confetti and congratulations. They left on the 2.35 train for
Montreal. On their return, Mr. and Mrs. Barker will take up residence in their
summer cottage at Otter Lake. The groom is one of Smiths Falls' best known young
men and is a partner in the well known firm of Barker Brothers.
Marriage 1930 Barton - Halliday
A quiet but pretty wedding was
solemnized at the Presbyterian manse Smiths Falls, by Dr. Davies on Wednesday
afternoon at 3 o'clock, when Gada Marie, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Omar
Halliday was united in marriage to Mr. Harold Barton youngest son of Mr. and
Mrs. Fred Barton of Merrickville. The bride looked charming in a dress of powder
blue crepe with hat and shoes to match. The young couple was attended by the
bride's sister, Marion Halliday and Mr. Kenneth Buttimore of Merrickville. After
the ceremony the young couple left on a short wedding trip. The bride travelled
in a navy blue suit with hat and shoes to match. On their return Mr. and Mrs.

Marriage 1929 Bass - McCrea
The home of Mrs. John Shields, 95 Main Street, was the scene of a quiet but pretty wedding yesterday afternoon at 2.00 o'clock. When her granddaughter Marion Margaret McCrea. Daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. W. F. McCrea became the bride of Mr. Merrill Clark Bass. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bass, Lombardy. Rev. George Code performed the ceremony in the presence of the immediate relatives. Mr. Robert Jones played the wedding music. The bride was given in marriage by her uncle. Mr. W. T. Hands of Perth wore a period gown of white silk crepe with overskirt of old lace and white shoes, and stockings. Her veil was arranged in cap effect and caught with orange blossoms. She carried a shower bouquet of spring flowers. Her bridesmaid, Mrs. Roberta Jones wore rose crepe de chine with touches of black and shoes and stockings to match. Mr. Ormond Bess was groomsman. Following the ceremony a dainty buffet luncheon was served, the dining room being decorated with streamers and bowls of daffodils. Later Mr. and Mrs. Bass left for Ottawa, Montreal and other points and on their return will reside on the groom's farm near Lombardy. The congratulations of the community are extended to this young couple.
