The Midland Republican, Thursday, March 6, 1919,           Ten Months overseas: wounded once       "Pete" Thurlow, son of Will Thurlow, now home enjoying "civil" life. Arthur "Pete" Thurlow , who enlisted just five days after war was declared spent ten months of his time since the in France with the 5th Bn. Signalcorps, had some exciting experiences while "over there" . He landed in France, march 11, 1918 and stayed in the old historic Napoleon barracks there for 5 days from which place they moved inland to Chateauvillain, where they remained for two months waiting for the rest of the division after which period they pushed on up to the front arriving there May 31. Here "Pete" was wounded on July 15 in the second battle of the Marne. During heavy shell fire and a gas attack he was detailed to fix some telephone wires a St. Agan that had been broken by continuous shell fire, and while doing so he was hit by a piece of high explosive shell, which struck the metal connection on his gas mask and glanced off striking him in the right shoulder. The wound was slight and so he stayed "on the job." Soon after this they moved to Goudrecourt where they "rested" (The word is strictly literal here) for ten days and then three weeks were spent at St. Mihiel later going to Argonne where he was taken sick October 3, with what afterward proved to be typhoid fever, and sent an evacuation hospital at Suilly and from here to the base hospital at Langres where the disease kept him for six weeks. When he got out of the hospital at Langres he spent three weeks at Brest recuperating from the fever and then sailed for "the good old U.S." He praises the work of the Salvation Army and the Red Cross at the front very highly but says that the "Y " never got up to the front in the sections that he was in over there to do much good.

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 1977       WILMER JAMES FERGUSON                A kind gentle man with a touch of grace. A true people person who loved his fellow man and who always had the time to reach out, to communicate and to listen to others with empathy and under standing.  He was firm believer in the boundless capacity of the human | spirit to rise above the daily problems and frustrations and appreciate God's beautiful gift of life and all the riches with which we are endowed but so seldom take time to recognize and contemplate with humility and thanksgiving. In Wilmer Ferguson's case, he found this beauty and spiritual refreshment in nature and the wildlife of the great outdoors. Like a child, he never ceased to be impressed with the breathtaking panorama of a northern sunset, the sight of a stately pine reaching for the sky, a flight of Canada geese against a backdrop of fleecy white clouds, a simple piece of rock with its myriad swirls and hidden irridescence waiting to be | tumbled and polished to a jewel I of perfection, the lonely cry of a loon on an isolated lake, a diamond-studded sky on a bright, clear night, the inner satisfaction that comes after a long day's paddle, a majestic moose silhouetted against a rocky shore, the painter's palette of autumn foliage in the hills and farmland of his Lanark County forbears, all the different trees he so lovingly transplanted from all parts of the country to his backyard. Truly, Nature was his doctor and his lover. But, not only did he have a ' deep, abiding affection for people and nature during his lifetime, he also had a consuming interest and deep respect for the heritage of ! the past - and he actively pursued those long-lost trails into the dim recesses of history through participation and leadership in historical and archaeological societies in Manitoba. The lineage of his forefathers and their pioneer Struggles to homestead in Lanark County, Ontario never ceased to fascinate him. Although far away, to his relatives and friends in Lanark County he was always one of them intensely loyal and fiercely proud of his Scottish-Canadian heritage. What else (can we say? Wilmer Ferguson was one of those warm human beings who had a zest for life and who had the gift of being able to sense and share its wonders with others whose lives he touched in passing. He was a loving husband and father, an understanding brother, a true friend, a believer in the greater divinity of God and His universe - a gentleman. We shall all miss him deeply.

JOHN ELDEN FERGUSONS EDITOR'S NOTE: Few of us are prepared to demonstrate our love or pride publicly; particularly when it concerns a member of the family. We are often much too shy and feel it is not always proper. Here's testimony of one man's love for a dead brother. We were moved by it. Era readers will be too.

The news of the death of Mr.  James Ferguson at Montreal on Sunday was heard with very great regret by a large circle of relatives  friends and  acquaintance?.  It is true that he had been in extremely poor health of late, it is also true that he had  passed  the allotted time of  man, three score years and ten, but it was thought up to the day before his death that he was recovering and none  were prepared for the announcement of his demise.  He had been at a sanitarium in Montreal since the beginning of January for treatment and it was hoped he would be benefited  but on Saturday pneumonia  developed  and on Sunday morning  he passed away. He was 71 years old; and was born  in Montague on the farm where he lived all his life until he moved to Smith's Falls about ten years ago. He had a good farm, he managed it well and was eminently successful being; counted among the wealthiest farmers of the township.  He was a man of scrupulous honesty and this together with his thrift and his intelligence gained for him the confidence of the community in which he lived, and made him a leader. For twenty-two years he lived  in the township, Council and for eighteen of those years he was Reeve and thus a member of the County Council. Twice he stood for Parliamentary honors as an independent Conservative, but was co defeated both times.  In Smith's Falls be lived a quiet retired life enjoying the fruits of his earlier years of toil and effort. He was elected to the council here for one term, but did not relish the work and was not a candidate for re-election.  He was a man of blameless life, a kind neighbor and a good friend. Those who knew him best liked him most.  In religion he was a Presbyterian, a life long member of St Andrew's church, and in   politics a Conservative.  From the time he was , 18 years old he was a member of  Numogate Orange Lodge. He is survived by his wife and seven children two sons, J. Davison  and J. Stewart on the farm in Montague, Mrs. T.  Irvine, Montague, Mrs. J. Blackburn, North Elmsley, Misses Jennie, Maggie and May at  home.  The funeral will take place tomorrow at 2 o'clock p.m  from his late home on  Water street west. to
