        Suddenly at her residence, R. R. # 3, Stittsville, on Wednesday, June 6, 1979 CORA MINETA CASSIDY, beloved wife of the late Milton Graham; dear mother of Denzel, Claude, Russell and Sterling, all of Stittsville; Gilmour, Hamilton, Ontario; Hazel (Mrs. R. Bradley), Helen (Mrs. W. Ludlow), Shirley (Mrs. Ivan Seabrook), all of Ottawa, predeceased by son Dalton; predeceased by Sisters Edna Dowdall, Lola Rathwell and brothers William, Cedric, Verner, Carman, Arthur, and Alton; loving grandmother of 24 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren, in her 87th year. Rested at the Kerry Funeral Home, 61 Lake Avenue W., Carleton Place. Thence to Wesley United Church, Stittsville where funeral service was held on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. Interment Munster Union Cemetery.

August 18, 1979        William Gordon James       

        William Gordon James, R. R. # 1, Carleton Place, a former reeve of Ramsay Township and warden of Lanark County, died in Carleton Place and District Memorial Hospital, Saturday, August 18, 1979 in his 73rd year after a lengthy illness. Born April 20, 1907, Gordon was the eldest of the late William E. and Annie James of the James Settlement in Lanark Township. In earlier years he spent some time surveying in the Rouyn District of Northern Quebec. At one time he played on the Union Hall Ball Team. Mr. James was active in community affairs. He was a member of Lanark Township Council, Reeve of Ramsay Township and Warden of Lanark County in 1964. He was a Past County Master of Lanark County Loyal Orange Lodge. Mr. James was an active member of St. George’s Church, Clayton, and later of St. John’s Church, Innisville. He took a keen interest in the Union Hall and IXL Cheese factories. As well as his wife, the former Wilhemena Dunlop, Mr. James is survived by one son, Charles and daughters, Eleanor (Mrs. David Aldus) R. R. # 1, Carleton Place, Marilyn, R. R. # 1, and daughter-in-law, Evelyn James. Mr. James is also survived by his grandchildren Lisz and Shelley Aldus and Marshall and Travis James. Also surviving are three brothers, Warren, Perth; Frank and John E., R. R. #2, Carleton Place and one sister, Eleanor (Mrs. Ray Bartlett), Carleton Place, as well as his aunt, Mrs. Eleanor Stewart, Calgary, Alberta. The funeral took place from the Alan R. Barker Funeral Home, Carleton Place, Tuesday, August 21, 1979 to St. John’s Church, Innisville, for service at 1:30 p.m. with Rev. Roger Young officiating. Interment took place in St. George’s Cemetery. Pallbearers were Leonard Dowdall, John Weir, George Wright, John R. W. James, Steven Bartlett and Gary Hudson.

October 14, 1979        Gladys Pearl Closs          

        Gladys Pearl Closs, wife of the late Everett Closs, died in Carleton Place and District Memorial Hospital, Sunday, October 14, 1979 after an illness of two weeks. Mrs. Closs was born in Lanark Township, May 28, 1908, a daughter of the late John Henry Munro and his wife, Margaret Ellen Manarey. She lived at the family farm home near Halpenny, Lanark Township. Mrs. Closs was a member of St. John’s Anglican Church, Innisville.   Mrs. Closs was the mail courier for Rural Route No. 5, Almonte, from 1924 to 1964. She was a member of the Registered Hereford Association for over 50 years. As well as her daughter Helen (Mrs. Ted Gillan), Pakenham, Mrs. Closs is survived by two sisters, Mary (Mrs. Jack Currie), Blakeney and Viola (Mrs. Dan J. Craig), Carleton Place as well one brother, Clifford, Dewitt’s Corners. Mrs. Closs was predeceased by one sister, Edna (Mrs. Ernie Munro) and three brothers, Isaac, Dannie and William Munro. The funeral took place from the Young Funeral Home, Lanark, to St. John’s Anglican Church, Innisville, for service at 2 p.m., Wednesday, October 17, 1979. with Rev. Roger Young officiating. Interment took place in Clayton United Cemetery. Pallbearers were neighbours, Lloyd Dickinson, Frank Quinn, James Quinn, Bill Halpenny, John Bryant and a nephew, John Currie.

November 1, 1979        Hilda Gertrude Salter         

        Hilda Gertrude Salter, 126 Sussex Street, Carleton Place,  died November 1, 1979 in Carleton Place and District Memorial  Hospital, age 72, after an illness of two days. Born April 14, 1907, at Prospect, Ontario in Beckwith Township.  Mrs. Salter was the daughter of the late James Henry Saunders and his wife,  Sarah Ann Saunders. She was educated at Prospect School, S. S. # 4, Beckwith Township. Mrs. Salter and the late Garland Salter were  married June 12, 1929 at Prospect, Ontario. They farmed on the Salter farm in  the fourth concession of Beckwith. Mrs Salter as a member of the former Women's Auxiliary of St. Augustine's Anglican Church, Prospect. After Mrs. Salter moved to Carleton Place, she attended St James’ Anglican Church. Hilda was a member of the Beckwith Women’s Institute, the Carleton Place Senior Citizens’ Club, and the Jock River Senior Citizen’s Club, Ashton.  She always enjoyed having her family and friends around her. Mrs. Salter is survived by one daughter, Mildred Lois (Mrs Donald Hamilton), Ottawa and one son, Lorne Garland Salter, Kitchener, Ontario. She is also survived by her sister, Vera (Mrs. Ernie Salmon), Smiths Falls and two brothers, Milton Saunders, Admiral, Saskatchewan and Wilber Saunders, Manotick. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Paul and Christopher Hamilton and Cynthia and Blair Salter. Mrs. Salter was predeceased by brothers, Harold and Clifford Saunders and sisters, Hazel (Mrs. James Woods) and Edna (Mrs. John Griffith). The funeral took place from the Alan R. Barker Funeral Home to St. James’ Anglican Church, Carleton Place, for service at 2 p.m. Saturday, November 3, 1979 with Rev. Alan Gallichan officiating, assisted by Archdeacon John Salter. Interment took place in St. Augustine’s Anglican Cemetery, Prospect, Ontario. Pallbearers were Carl Saunders, Milton Saunders, Gordon Saunders, Glenn  Saunders, Ronald Salmon, and David Lowry.

December 9, 1979        Mina Gertrude Cooke         

        Mina Gertrude Cooke, 266 Bridge Street, Carleton Place died in Carleton Place and District Memorial Hospital, December 9, 1979, age 85 years after a short illness. Miss Cooke was born at Scotch Corners, February 2, 1894, daughter of the late George Cooke and his wife, Elizabeth Hughes. She was educated at Scotch Corners School. Mina made her home with her parents until their death. Then she came to Carleton Place to reside with her sister and brother-in-law, Edith and Jim Miller. Miss Cooke attended Zion-Memorial United Church and worked in the church organizations. She survived by sisters, Mary (Mrs. Clarence Emerson), Edith (Mrs. James Miller), Dorothy ( Mrs. George Malloch), and brother, Lorne. Two sisters, Iva Cooke and Grace Nolan, predeceased her. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. The funeral service took place in the Chapel of the Alan R. Barker Funeral Home, Tuesday, December 11,1979 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Wesley Mitchell officiating. Interment took place in Boyd’s United Cemetery. Pallbearers were Ray Chambers, Orville Cooke, Harold Hughes, Carl Cooke, James Miller, Jr. and Caldwell Wilson.

1980        Eleanor D. James          

        Eleanor Dorothy James , 87 Queen Street, Almonte, died March 4 in Almonte General Hospital, at the age of 75.       Mrs. James was born April 19, 1904 in Carleton Place, the daughter of the late William J. Rothwell and Mary James, of Ferguson’s Falls. Educated in Carleton Place and Ottawa, she became a teacher. On September 1, 1928, Mrs. James, then Miss Rothwell, married the late John F. James, a farmer. They were married in Innisville. Mrs. James attended St. Paul’s Anglican church, Almonte, and was a member of the St. Paul’s ACW, the Senior Citizens’ Club of Fairview Manor, the Ramsay Women’s Institute, the United Senior Citizens’ of Ontario the Lanark-Renfrew- Carleton Progressive Conservative Association, the Almonte Hospital Auxiliary. Mrs. James is survived by her five sons, John R. James (Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta) , B. Robert James (Castor, Alberta), H. Ennis James ( Portland, Ont.), W. Warren James (Ottawa), and F Winston James (Cochrane, Ont.) She is also survived by her two daughters, Elizabeth A. Toop of Almonte, and F. Audrey MacDonald of Clayton. Surviving also are two brothers, Warren Rothwell, of Ottawa, and Oswald Rothwell, of Lanark; and her sister Isabel Dillane, of Sun City, Arizona. A public funeral was held March 8 from the Gamble & Comba Funeral Home. Church services conducted by Reverend Harry Brown assisted by Reverend G. F. Bickley and Reverend Roger A. Young, Clayton, were held at St. Paul’s Anglican Church. Burial took place at St. George’s Cemetery, Clayton. Mrs. James’  pallbearers were her four grandsons, James A. Toop, John F. MacDonald, J. Kenneth Macdonald, T. Frederick James; and her two nephews, S. Gerald Rothwell and Donald W. Rothwell.

January 11, 1980        DOWDALL, Gertrude Elizabeth

        In hospital at Carleton Place, Ontario, on Friday, January 11, 1980, Gertrude Elizabeth McDougall in her 77th year; beloved wife of the late George Norman Dowdall; dear mother of Anna (Mrs. Arthur Ferguson) and Pearl of New Market; Ken of St. George; Mel, Bill and Leonard (Mac) of Carleton Place; Lois (Mrs. Eric Robertson) of Drummond; Donald of Foresters Falls; Doris (Mrs. C. Craig) of Appleton; Wayne of Maitland. Survived by 25 grandchildren and her sister, Mrs. Ruby Rodger of Perth. Predeceased by a brother, Melville McDougall and 2 sisters Effie (Mrs. Lester Jamieson) and Pearl McDougall. Resting at the Alan R. Barker Funeral Home, McArthur Ave., Carleton Place until 2 p.m. Monday thence to St. John’s Anglican Church, Innisville for service at 2:30 p.m. Interment St. John’s cemetery. Donations to St. John’s Memorial Fund would be appreciated.

January 11, 1980        Gertrude Elizabeth Dowdall         

        Gertrude Elizabeth Dowdall, wife of the late George Norman Dowdall, R. R. # 1, Carleton Place, Ontario died January 11, 1980 In Carleton Place and District Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness, age 76. Mrs. Dowdall was born in Dalhousie Township, November 28, 1903, daughter of the late Hugh McDougall and his wife, Elizabeth Fair. She received her early education at Watson's Corners. Mrs. Dowdall was a retired Registered Nurse, a member of the first graduating class from  the former Rosamond Memorial Hospital, Almonte, in 1925.  She was married to the late George Norman Dowdall November 10, 1926, in the United Church, Balderson. Mr. and Mrs. Dowdall farmed in McCreary’s Settlement, near Carleton Place. Mrs. Dowdall attended St. John’s Anglican Church, Innisville and was a member of the St. John’s ACW. As well as sons Ken, St. George’s; Bill, Mel, and Leonard (Mac)  Carleton Place; Donald, Forester's Falls; Wayne, Maitland; Mrs. Dowdall is survived by daughters, Anna (Mrs. Art Ferguson) and Pearl, Newmarket; Lois (Mrs. Eric Robertson), Drummond and Doris (Mrs. E. Craig) Appleton. She is also survived by 25 grandchildren. Mrs. Dowdall is also survived by her sister, Mrs. Ruby Rodger, Perth. She was predeceased by one brother, Melville McDougall and sisters, Effie (Mrs. Lester Jamieson) Almonte and Pearl McDougall. The funeral took place from the Alan R. Barker Funeral Home, Carleton Place to St. John’s Church, Innisville for Service at 2:30 p.m., January 14, 1980 with Rev. Roger A. Young officiating. Interment was St. John’s Cemetery, Innisville. The pallbearers were John Weir, Charles James, George Wright, Dan McCreary, Bob Dezell and Lloyd Code.

January 16, 1980        Lorne Cooke 

        Lorne Cooke, Scotch Corners, died at his home January 16, 1980, age 73. Mr. Cooke was born at Scotch Corners, July 13, 1906, the son of the late George Cooke an his wife, Elizabeth Hughes. Mr. Cooke and his wife, the former Marion Horne, were married April 18, 1928 at Watson’s Corners. A farmer, Mr. Cooke attended Boyd’s United Church. As well as his wife, Mr. Cooke is survived by sons, Ronald, R. R. # 1, Oxford Mills; Kenneth, R. R. # 1, Lombardy; Carl, Stittsville; Wilfred, Scotch Corners; Orval, Carleton Place and daughters, Freda (Mrs. Ivan Perry), Jean (Mrs. Charles Dickens), Joyce (Mrs. Michael Jaques), Carleton Place and Iva (Mrs. Barry MacLennan) , Almonte. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren and one great grandchild. Also surviving are sisters, Mary (Mrs. Clarence Emerson), Edith (Mrs. James Miller), Dorothy (Mrs. G. Malloch), all of Carleton Place. He was predeceased by sisters, Grace Nolan, Iva Cooke, and Gertrude Cooke. The funeral service took place in the chapel of the Alan R. Barker Funeral Home January 18, 1980 at 2 p.m. with Mr. Robert Bowker officiating. Interment took place in Boyd’s United cemetery. Pallbearers were grandsons, Wayne Hanneman; Brian, Brent and Todd Cooke and neighbours, Fred Code and Ross Dezell.

January 25, 1980        Robert Edward Brydges   

        Robert Edward Brydges, R. R. # 1, Carleton Place (Innisville), died suddenly, accidentally January 25, 1980, at Pakenham, age 24 years. Mr. Brydges was the son of Robert S. Brydges and his wife, the former Joyce J. Rathwell. He was born in Carleton Place August 26, 1955 and educated in Carleton Place Public and High Schools. Bob lived all his life in the Carleton Place area. He belonged to St. John’s Anglican Church, Innisville. He was employed as a truck driver. As well as his parents, Joyce and Bob Brydges, Mr. Brydges is survived by his brother, Ronald and his sisters, Sheryl and Shelley at home and his grandmother, Ida (Mrs. Eddie) Rathwell, of Innisville.   The funeral took place from the Kerry Funeral Home, Carleton Place, to St. John’s Anglican Church, Innisville, for service at 2 p.m., January 18, 1980 with Rev. Roger A. Young officiating. Pallbearers were Lee Gardiner, Lyman Gardiner, Tim Hollington, Gordie Morrice, Steve More and Art Griffith. Honorary pallbearers were Brian Hope, Doug Fisher, Arnold Brunton, Ron Boal, Wayne Lewis, and Alan Hodgins, employees of Cavanagh Construction Company.

February 7, 1980        Robert Caldwell Wilson           

        Robert Caldwell Wilson, 279 Bridge Street, Carleton Place, Ontario died February 7, 1980 In Carleton Place and District Memorial Hospital in his 69th year. Mr. Wilson was born May 8, 1911 in Montague Township, a son of the late Reverend J. E. Wilson and his wife Sarah Leach.  He was educated in various elementary schools in Eastern Ontario and Smiths Falls Collegiate Institute. Cal was married to the former Elizabeth McLaren September 28, 1940in Westboro United Church Manse by the late Reverend A. P.  Menzies. He was employed as a mechanic with the late Charles G. Dowdall for 10 years before enlisting in the Canadian Armed Forces in 1942. In November 1944, Cal went overseas, serving in RCEME Workshops in England and Holland, until he returned from overseas February 5, 1946. On his return he purchased the business from Mr. Dowdall, operating it as Mississippi Motors until his retirement in 1978. Mr. Wilson was a Past Master St. John's Lodge No. 63 AF and AM; Past First Principal Maple Chapter No. 116, R A M; also a member of the Scottish Rite. He was the retired Fire Chief of the Ocean Wave Fire Company and an honorary member of the Carleton Place “100” Club. Cal attended Zion Memorial United Church. He was a life member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 192, Carleton Place. As well as his wife, Cal is survived by his son, Gordon Caldwell Wilson, Newmarket, Ontario and his daughter, Mary Elizabeth Wilson, Meaford,  Ontario. He is also survived by brothers, Phineas, Smiths Falls; Dr. J. B. Wilson, Gananoque  and sisters, Stella, (Mrs. Clifford Cheetham), Gananoque; Carrie (Mrs. Earl Armstrong), Ottawa; Thelma (Mrs. Edward Dunfield), Hamilton; Georgina (Mrs. Thomas Robinson), Kingston. He was predeceased by one brother, H. B. Wilson. The funeral service took place in the chapel of the Alan R. barker Funeral Home, Carleton Place, February 9, 1980 at 2 p.m. with Reverend Wesley G. Mitchell officiating. Interment will take place in the United Cemeteries in the spring. Pallbearers were Kenneth J. Drummond, Donald Ferrill, W. E. Reynolds, A. J. Illingworth, Kirk D. E. Miller, Guelph and Douglas Moulton.

March 8, 1980        James A. Patterson   

        James A. Patterson, 71 High Street, Carleton Place, Ontario, died March 8, 1980 in the Civic Hospital, Ottawa, in his 73rd year.  Mr. Patterson was born in Carleton Place, son of the late David Patterson and his wife, Annie Darou. He received his education in Carleton Place. For the past 16 years, Jim was a stock broker for Davidson Partners, Ottawa. He had worked previously for many years in the hardware business in Carleton Place. Mr. Patterson served in the Royal Canadian Air Force in the Second World War. He was a life member of St. John’s Masonic Lodge No. 63, A.F. and A.M. and a life member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 192, Carleton Place. As well as his wife, the former Nellis Coburn, Mr. Patterson is survived by two brothers, Sandy, Perth, and Grant, Carleton Place. he is also survived by two sisters, Margaret (Mrs. George Hepburn), Picton, Ontario and Jean (Mrs,. Russell Clarke) of Belleville, Ontario. He was predeceased by brothers, Harold, William and Lorne. The funeral service took place at the Kerry Funeral Home, Carleton Place, March 11, 1980 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Wesley Mitchell officiating.  Interment will take place in the United Cemeteries in the spring.     Honorary pallbearers were W. S. McCauley, Dr. E. J. Walroth, Alan Swayne, Howard Dack, James Graham, and Howard McNeely. Active pallbearers were David Patterson, Bill Baird, John Coburn, Wayne Price, nephews and Sergeant James Lowe and Constable Terry Williams of the Carleton Place Police.
