Letter         July 31, 1974         A born teacher

I must pay a tribute to the late Miss Lucy Ruttle, resident and teacher of Carleton Place and area. She was a born teacher. I had her as a teacher for seven years of my public school experience at S. S. # 11, Lanark Township, Boyd’s Settlement. These were the depression years. All the public school grades were taught in a building which at that time was about 90 years old. With little or no money for the extra frills of modern education, she had a way of daily enriching the classes and program. We, the pupils, did not feel deprived. Our teacher gave of herself unstintingly for the benefit of her students. A good sense of humour with kind but firm discipline made the learning experience an adventure. In a classroom with more than one Christian denomination represented, we were introduced each morning to the world's greatest literature, the Bible, in a modern story form that included the Old and New testaments. From this source such qualities as courage, truthfulness, kindness, and forgiveness were quietly sown in young lives. Lucy Ruttle has a continuing influence on many of the people she touched in the community, church, and school, including the writer of this letter. Gordon A. Hammond, Payne, Ont.
