Lest We Forget

(W. H. McFarlane) - Your feature story "Clayton Village in the Nineties" by J. H. McFarlane, in the Gazette of January 30th, was no doubt interesting to many of your readers. Being a nephew of the late, J. H. McFarlane, writer of the history of Clayton, the thought came to me that many at this time may not know the history of this man, a former resident of Clayton. Some time between 1892 and 1900 he taught in the Clayton Public School. It was on January 3rd, 1900 he married Rebecca Barnett of Clayton, and at that time left Clayton to become principal of the Carleton Place Public School. Five years later he became principal of Arnprior public school and in 1910 moved to Haileybury where he taught school for 22 years, retiring in 1932. Uncle Jack McFarlane, as he was related to the writer, was born on the 10th line of Drummond on the farm now owned by Mr. and Mrs. William Playfair. His wife predeceased him in 1934, and shortly after he revisited his old school in Clayton and presented three hand-painted pictures of Northern Ontario scenes to be hung in the school building. His family of four sons survive Leslie in Whitby, Frank, Wilmont and Graham in Haileybury. Nieces and nephews in this area are Doris, Mrs. W. Y. Wood of Pakenham; Helen, Mrs. John C. Sutherland of Almonte; Mrs. Clifford Ballantyne of Lanark; Eldon of Ottawa; Pearl of Toronto and W. H. McFarlane of Perth. In the last years of Mr. McFarlane's residence in Haileybury, he did considerable work by way of writing on the pioneer history of the Ottawa Valley communities with which he was acquainted. J. H. McFarlane passed away at his home in Haileybury, January 3rd, 1939 in his 70th year, and his body rests in Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Haileybury.
