Garfield Ledgerwood dies at 60

A former resident of White Lake, Garfield Ledgerwood, died in St David's, Ontario on June 17, 1975. He was the son of the late John Ledgerwood and his wife Leana, now a resident of Bonnechere Manor, Renfrew. Mr. Ledgerwood was born in White Lake on August 9, 1914 and was educated at White Lake School. For the last four years he was caretaker of the Lions Club Hall, St David's and was an honorary member of that organization. He is survived by two brothers, Irvin of Glenarm and Harvey of Almonte and by four nieces and four nephews. The body rested at the Boyce Funeral Home, Arnprior where a funeral service was conducted in the Chapel on June 21 by the Reverend Ian MacDonald. The pallbearers were Donald Ledgerwood, Brian Ledgerwood, James Scobie, Brian Burnette, Harold Jordon and Tom McCourt. Burial was in White Lake Cemetery.

ELIZA IRENE SNEDDEN

The death of Mrs. Eliza Irene (McCann) Snedden, widow of the late James Snedden, of Pakenham, occurred at the Carleton Place and District Memorial Hospital on Saturday, June 1, 1974. Mrs. Snedden was born at Pakenham on November 21, 1903, a daughter of the late James I. McCann and his wife, Emma Needham. She was a member of St. Andrew's United Church, Pakenham. She was married at Pakenham on June 5, 1941, to the late James Snedden. Surviving are one son, Bruce Snedden of Ottawa, and a sister, Mrs. Alice Smithson. She was predeceased by three brothers, Hiram, Edgar and Albert McCann, and one sister, Letitia, Mrs. Stuart Fulton. Her funeral was held from the Kerry Funeral Home, Elgin street, Almonte, on Tuesday afternoon, June 4, with burial at Auld Kirk Cemetery. Rev. C. Dodds conducted the services. Pallbearers were Denis Syne, Stuart McCann, Robert Drysdale, Hugh Fulton, Earl Snedden, and Sandy Snedden.

GILLAN, Marguerite Ann - In hospital at Arnprior on Monday Jan 26, 1981, MARGUERITE ANN WILSON. Beloved wife of the late Charles Gillan and dear mother of Charles and Mrs. Donald Gifford (Joan) both of Pakenham. Also survived by nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren. JAMES LLOYD MILLER

The death. of Mr. James Lloyd Miller of R.R, 2 Almonte, occurred on Tuesday evening, February 19, 1974, at the Carleton Place and District Memorial Hospital. He was 85. Born in Lanark Township on October 7, 1888, he was a son of the late William Miller and his, wife, Agnes Baird. He received his education at James' school, and spent his lifetime farming on the first line of Ramsay. On August 30, 1911, he was married to the former Maude E. Payne. He was a member of the United Church and attended services at Zion Memorial in Carleton Place and Boyd's United. Surviving besides his widow, are a son, Robert J. Miller of R.R, 2, Almonte; two daughters, E. Joan (Mrs. W. A. Van Sickle) and Irene E. (Mrs. J. F. Leeson), both of Toronto, and a brother, Albert G. Miller of Pakenham. He was predeceased by two brothers, William and John Miller. The funeral was held from the Alan R. Barker Funeral Home, McArthur Ave., Carleton Place, on Friday, February 22, at 2 p.m., with interment at Clayton United Cemetery. Mr. R. S. Bowker conducted the funeral services. Pallbearers were four nephews, Bert Miller, Jack Miller, Charles Miller and Russell Miller, Gordon Donaldson and Earl Sweeney. Honorary pallbearers were William Bellamy, Wilfred Purdy, Eldon Ireton and Edward Halpenny.

JAMES A. DAVIDSON

James Alexander Davidson of 272 St. George Street, Almonte, died suddenly at his late residence on Saturday, December 6th, 1975, in his 86th year. A son of the late James A. Davidson, he was born at Renfrew, on February 1, 1890. He received his education at Renfrew, and before his retirement was a storekeeper with Canadian Comstock, Ltd. He was a member of Almonte Presbyterian Church. Mr. Davidson was predeceased by his first wife, the late Bertha McKinnon, and was married at Lachine, Quebec, in 1955, to the late Caroline Brodie. He is survived by a son, Douglas, of Thunder Bay, Ontario a stepson, Russell Dixon of Almonte, and a sister, Miss Lillian Davidson of Campbellford, Ontario. The funeral was held from the Comba Funeral Home, Church Street, on Thursday, December 11, the Rev. Douglas McQuaig of Almonte Presbyterian Church conducting the services. Burial took place at St. Paul's Cemetery. Pallbearers were George German, Reg. Morton, Pete Remmilard and Gordon Drynan.

Hundreds Attend Funeral of George H. Doucett

St. James, Anglican Church, Carleton Place, was filled to overflowing on Saturday afternoon, May 4, 1974, for a Requiem Eucharist in Thanksgiving for the life and witness of the late George H. Doucett. Mr. Doucett 76, passed away suddenly in the garden of his home on Moffatt street on Wednesday afternoon, May 1st. The body lay in state at St. James Anglican Church where hundreds called to pay their respects to a long-time friend and acquaintance. 

Among the large gathering at the funeral service at St. James' were former colleagues of the deceased in both, the House of Commons and the Ontario Legislature, including former Prime Minister John G. Diefenbaker. Taking part in the funeral Eucharist were the Reverend F. Allan McGregor, rector of St. James'; Rev. Fred Allan, associate priest; the Venerable John A. Salter of Almonte, retired Archdeacon of Lanark; Rev. E. Daniel Fleming, former rector of St. James', and Rev. David K. Stalter, former associate priest of the parish. Rev. McGregor preached a fitting sermon of appreciation for the outstanding contribution Mr. Doucett had made to the life and welfare of his church and community. The message from Bishop Robinson of the Ottawa Diocese ,was read by Archdeacon Salter. The remains were laid to rest in St. James' Anglican Cemetery. Active Pallbearers were Robert Hawkins, Joe Turner and Willis Armour of Carleton Place, Chas. A. Menzies of Innisville, and Mack McCutcheon, of Chatham and Campbell Miller of London, both former colleagues of the deceased in the House of Commons. Honorary pallbearers were Howard McNeely, Orton Hobbs and Lou Lloyd of Carleton Place, Dr. James Coupland and George Gomme of Almonte, and Desmond M. Code of Smiths Falls. George Henry Doucett was a native of the 4th line of Ramsay, a son of the late Joseph Doucett and his wife, Martha Irwin. Reaching manhood he conducted his own farm on the 7th line just north of Carleton Place. Early in life he became interested in municipal affairs, and at the age of 21 years he was elected to Ramsay Council as a township councillor. In 1928 he was elected reeve and continued in that capacity until he was elected Warden of Lanark County in 1935. He was elected to the Ontario Legislature in 1936 and represented the people of Lanark County at Toronto for twenty years, where he served Ontario as Minister of Public Works as well as Minister of Highways. He was elected to the Parliament of Canada in 1957 and represented Lanark in the House of Commons until his retirement in 1963. Since that time he continued to operate his insurance business at Carleton Place, up until two years ago. In fraternal circles he was a prominent, member of both the Masonic Order and the Loyal Orange Lodge at Carleton Place. Both societies conducted their services at the church on Thursday evening. Mr. Doucett is survived by his wife, the former Mona Middleton; one sister, Annie (Mrs. George Wiggins) of Oshawa, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by five brothers, Alymer, John, Albert, William and Williard, and four sisters, Emma (Mrs. Currie Hawkins), Margaret (Mrs. Gordon Toop), Alice (Mrs. George Smith) and Mary.

CLARKE GEORGE STEWART PATERSON

The death of Clarke George Stewart Paterson of R.R.#I, Almonte, occurred suddenly on August 2nd, 1975, at the age of sixteen. Clarke was born on October 24th, 1958, in Carleton Place, the son of Delmer and his wife Dorothy (Smith), brother of Richard, Jamie, Alice Ann, Cheryl, Darlene, Julie and Lisa, grandson of Mrs. Stewart Paterson, who survive, and grandson of the late George and Nan Smith of Perth. Clarke attended Almonte Elementary schools and was a student at Almonte and District High School at the time of his death. He attended St. George's Anglican Church in Clayton. The funeral service was conducted by the Rev. H. Brown at the Comba Funeral Home, Almonte, on Monday August 4th at 2.00 p.m. with interment in the Auld Kirk Cemetery. Pallbearers were his uncle, George Smith, cousins George McKay, Raymond Cowan and Ivan Giles, friends Ray Miller and John Levi. Flower bearers were cousins, Scott Giles, Larry and Randy Connolly, Kevin Stoddard, Gordon McArthur and Kevin Mann.

CHARLES AUGUSTA HUTT

The death of Mr. Charles Augusta Hutt occurred at the Almonte Nursing Home an Tuesday, July 2nd, following a lengthy illness. Mr. Hutt was a former resident of the Almonte Senior Citizens' Home. He was 99. Born at Moulinette, Ontario on August 14, 1885, he was a son of the late Jerome Hutt and his wife, Marguerite. He was a cheesemaker by trade, and a member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church. Mr. Hutt was twice married, first to the late Margaret Etta Plumadore, and secondly of the late Mary McConeghy. He is survived by two sons, Ambrose and Norman of Almonte; daughters, Irene (Mrs. James Sadler), Almonte, Agnes (Mrs. Louis Leroux), Massena, N.Y., and Mrs. Hilda Spencer of Prescott; also a brother, Merrill Hutt of Dixon's Corners, and sisters, Iva (Mrs. Garnet Tyo), Brockville, and Wilda (Mrs. A. Bergeron), Cornwall. The funeral was held from the Comba Funeral Home, Church Street, Almonte, on Thursday morning, July 4, to St. Mary's Church for funeral mass, with burial at St. Mary's Cemetery. Father Milaney conducted the funeral services. Pallbearers were Douglas and Garry Spencer of Prescott, Morgan Hutt, Carleton Place, Charles Arsenault, Kingston, and Don Dodd and Pete McDougall of Almonte, all grandchildren of the deceased.

HAROLD ALVIN MORE

The death of Mr. Harold Alvin More occurred on Friday, November 30, 1973, at the Almonte General Hospital, in his 65th year. Mr. More, who was a retired Dairy Lab. Technician, resided at 240 Ottawa Street, Almonte. He had been employed with the Almonte Dairy, and also with the former Coleman's Creamery at Carleton Place. Born in Ramsay Township, on March 10, 1909, he was a son of the late Charles More and his wife, Katherine Gunn. He received his education at Ramsay Public Schools and Almonte High School, and later attended the dairy school in Kingston. He was married to the former Emma Jean Smith at the Almonte Presbyterian manse on August 27, 1938. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church; his hobby was flowers. Surviving besides his wife, are a son, Earl More of Arnprior; a daughter, Colleen, Mrs. Merrill Metcalfe of Pakenham; three brothers, Milton, Andrew and Charles, of Almonte, and a sister, Mrs. Myrtle Neal of Trenton. He is also survived by seven grandchildren. The funeral was held from the Kerry Funeral Home, Elgin street, on Sunday, December 2nd, at 2:30 p.m., with burial at the Auld Kirk Cemetery. Rev. Douglas McQuaig of the Presbyterian Church conducted the services. Pallbearers were David Neron, Kingston; Deryle Neron, Camp Borden; Doug and Randy Neal of Belleville, and Thomas and John More of Almonte.

JOHN EDWARD STANLEY - The death of John Edward Stanley occurred at the Almonte General Hospital, on Sunday, December 16th, 1973, after a lengthy illness. He was born on August 30th, 1912, in Pakenham township, son of Edmund Stanley and Sarah Ann Scott. He attended schools in the Pakenham area. He was a retired Cattle Drover of this district. He was married on October 12, 1945 in St. George's Anglican Church, Ottawa, to Doris Greene, who survives with one son John, of Almonte; also surviving are his mother, Mrs. Edmund Stanley and sisters, Mrs. Carmel Timmons, of Almonte, Mrs. Stuart Tosh (Betty), of Ottawa, and Mrs. Keith Cavanagh (Eva), of Pakenham. He was predeceased by one sister, Mrs. Harvey Cavanagh (Irene) and brother Roy. The funeral was held from the Comba Funeral Home, on 'Tuesday, December 18th, with Rev. George Bickley, of St. Paul's Anglican Church officiating. Burial took place at St. Mark's Anglican Cemetery, Pakenham. The pallbearers were Keith Stanley, Keith Cavanagh, Stuart Tosh, Eric Greene, Edgar Ritchie and Ian White.

McGREGOR, Ann D. (Nan), R.N. - Suddenly at Ottawa, Ont. on Monday February 13,1978, Ann D. (Nan) Frame, R.N., in her 84th year, beloved wife, of the late Charles Wesley McGregor; dear mother of Donald, R.R. #I, Carleton Place; Helen (Mrs. K. F. Scott), Ottawa; Elizabeth (Mrs. Ronald Lee), R.R. 1, Carleton Place: also survived by her brother Thomas A. Frame, Ottawa; sisters Elizabeth Frame and Isa (Mrs. L. Buist) Fife, Scotland; and 3 grandchildren. Resting at the Alan R. Barker Funeral Home, McArthur Ave., Carleton Place. Service in the Chapel on Thursday at 1: 30 p.m. Interment Auld Kirk Cemeteries. ROBERT DELMER RAYCROFT

The community was saddened recently at the news that Delmer Raycroft had passed away suddenly at his home Clayton, Ontario, on Sunday, November 25th, 1973. He was in his 59th year. Robert Delmer Raycroft was born on January 1st, 1913, in a Darling Township community then known as Raycroft, Ontario, a son of the late Robert Raycroft and his wife, the late Anna Miller. He received his education at S.S. No. 6, Darling, and later turned to farming, a vocation he perused all his life. More recently he had been a school bus operator as well. On October 18, 1939, he married the former Maud McKay at Carleton Place and resided in the Clayton area where he attended St Peter's United Church at Tatlock. Surviving besides his wife are three sons, Harvey, R.R. 1, Carp; Laurie, Lanark and Bryan of Toronto and two daughters, Dorothy (Mrs. Phillip Borrowman), Arnprior and Wenda at home. Also surviving are brothers George, R.R. 2, Clayton and Melville of Clayton and a sister, Mrs. Laura Boggis of Carleton Place. Funeral services for Mr. Raycroft were held from the Comba Funeral Home, Church St., Almonte, on Wednesday, November 28th, at 2 p.m. with interment at Clayton United Cemetery. Rev. Gordon C. Smyth conducted the services. Pallbearers were Welly Ray- (no more).

LYLA BENNETT LOCKHART

The death occurred suddenly on Monday, March 10th, 1975, of Mrs. A. Lockhart at Almonte General Hospital. Deceased was born in White Lake, the daughter the late Mr. and Mrs. A. Bennett. Predeceased by husband Arthur and one son, Archie, she leaves to mourn her loss, son Melville of Almonte and daughter Hilda (Mrs. Keith Jackson of Bowmanville); also seven grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren; one sister Francis (Mrs. J.
