Merrill Robert John Metcalfe
The death of Merrill Robert John Metcalfe of Lot 10, Concession 11, Pakenham Township, occurred early Sunday morning, January 19, 1975, as a result of a snowmobile accident near his home. He was 36. Born in Pakenham Township on July 9, 1938, he was a son of the late Albert Metcalfe and his late wife, Anne Barr. He received his education at Pakenham Public and Almonte High Schools. Merrill was a carpenter by trade and was employed with Pitts Construction at Arnprior. Active in sports and outdoor activities, he enjoyed travelling, snowmobiling and camping. He was a member of the Pakenham Curling Club, Pakenham Fire Department and Pakenham hockey teams, and was a leader of the Pakenham Boy Scouts and Cub Packs. He was a member of Pakenham United Church. On October 29, 1961, he was married at Almonte Presbyterian Church to the former Colleen Dorothea More, who survives, together with three sons, Brian, Alan and Randy and a daughter, Leanna, all at home. He was predeceased by a sister, who died in infancy. The funeral was held from the Kerry Funeral Home, Elgin Street, Almonte, at 2 p.m., Wednesday, January 22, with interment at Auld Kirk Cemetery. Rev. A. C. Dodds conducted the service, while a solo was rendered by Mr. Charles Tate, accompanied by Mrs. Thora Pugh. A firemen's service was held on Monday evening. TINA MARY FULTON
A lifelong resident of the Pakenham-White Lake area, Tina Mary (Floyd) Fulton, passed away suddenly at her home at Pakenham, on Wednesday, October 16, 1974. She was in her 75th year. Born at Waba, Ontario, on March 28,1900, she was a daughter of the late Albert Floyd and the late Elizabeth Ann Morphy. She was educated at White Lake school and was married on March 2, 1921, at Waba to Wilbert Angus Fulton, who predeceased her. Also predeceased are two brothers, Eric and Franklin. Funeral was held from the Comba Funeral Home, 127 Church Street, Almonte, to St. John's Presbyterian Church for service on Friday, October 18, at 2 p.m. Rev. Douglas C. McQuaig conducted the service. Interment was at Auld Kirk Cemetery. Pallbearers were Henry Morphy, Earl Morphy, John Early, Len Fulton, Bill Lawson and Art Lowe. |

MALCOLM RAYMOND THOMPSON
Malcolm Raymond (Mae) Thompson of Brucefield, Ontario, died in Seaforth Community Hospital on Monday, October 7, 1974 . He was in his 59th year. Mr. Thompson was born September 15, 1917, at Almonte, a son of Daniel John Thompson and Mary Ann Aitken. On May 31, 1947, he married Helen Margaret Fee, who survives him. He is also survived by two sons; Raymond Lawrence of Tillsonburg and Reginald James of Clinton, and one granddaughter Patrice. Also surviving are seven brothers: Harvey of Ottawa; Leonard of Ruthven, Lambert of Almonte, Alan of Carleton Place, Russell of Clayton, William of Arnprior, John of Almonte, and four sisters; Alice (Mrs. John Cross of Edmonton), Irene (Mrs. Earl Pretty of Middleville), Isobel (Mrs. W. S. Rodger of Lanark), and Laura (Mrs. J. G. Rintoul) Clayton). He was predeceased by one brother, Edwin. Following cremation at Mount pleasant Crematorium. London October 9, 1974 a memorial service was held at R. S. Box Funeral Home, Seaforth, on Friday, October 11, 1974. Mr. Thompson received his elementary education at S.S. No. 12, Lanark Township. For most of his life he farmed in Ramsay Township. The last ten years of his life were spent in Huron County. During part of those ten years, he was manager of a hog farm and was also employed at the Queen's Hotel in Seaforth. Mr. Thompson's literary talent and his fine wit and humour became widely recognized in a book which he wrote and had published in 1967 called "A Centennial Concoction of Verse, Fact, Fiction." The last verse of his book displayed Mr. Thompson's attitude towards life and his fellow man."If any story told by me, Has wrapped you up in ecstasy, Or made you somersault in glee , We've had some fun. If I, by gesture, deed, or thought, To you have any comfort brought, How much, or little, matters not, The victory's won. LILLIAN ELIZABETH WILMONT
The death of Mrs. Lillian Elizabeth (Hankin) Wilmont of R.R. No. 3 Smiths Falls occurred at St. Francis Hospital there on Sunday, July 14, 1974, following an illness of two months' duration. She was in her 77th year. Born in Liverpool, England, on June 23, 1898, she was a daughter of the late William and Lillian Hankin . She came to Canada in 1908, and received her education at Almonte area schools. She was a member of the Anglican Church. Mrs. Wilmont was twice married; first to the late Edward T. Munro, and secondly to Daniel Wilmont, who survives. Also surviving are four sons, Gordon Munro, Toronto; Archie Munro, in New Westminster, B.C.; Edward Munro, Almonte, and Williard Munro, Smiths Falls and two daughters, Martha (Mrs. Robert Craig), Smiths Falls, and Nellie of Almonte. The funeral was held from the Comba Funeral Home, Church street, Almonte, on Tuesday afternoon, July 16, with burial at Clayton United Cemetery. Archdeacon John A. Salter conducted the services. Pallbearers were grandsons, Willis Munro, Donald Munro, Albert Munro, Bob Craig, Howard Craig and Arnold Craig. |
JOHN RINTOUL
John Galbraith Rintoul died Feb 26 (1981) at Almonte hospital after an illness of several months. Mr. Rintoul was 59 years old, and a lifetime resident of his family homestead in Lanark Township near Clayton. He is survived by his wife, Laura Thompson, a son David of Lanark and two daughters, Donna and Lynn, both of Clayton. Also surviving Mr. Rintoul are his sister, Margaret (Mrs. William Bellamy of Clayton), and four grandchildren. Mr. Rintoul was an active member of the community during his lifetime. He served ten years on Lanark Township council, ten years on school board and also as an elder and steward at Guthrie United Church in Clayton. The funeral service took place on March 1 at Guthrie United Church and Mr. Rintoul was buried at the United cemetery in Clayton. Pallbearers at the funeral were all hunting companions and friends of Mr. Rintoul's. They were David McIntosh, Rodger Rintoul, James Hannan, Stuart Hurdis, Wilfred Larocque and Delmer Wark. Mr. Rintoul had a great appreciation for nature and enjoyed working on his farm as well as sharing hunting and fishing trips with friends and family. Travelling and meeting new people were also activities that Mr. Rintoul enjoyed greatly. He will be sadly missed by many friends throughout the district. |

JOHN EVERETT CLOSS
John Everett Closs passed away suddenly at his home in Lanark Township on October 30, 1975. He was in his 75th year. He was born at Prestonvale on December 25th, 1900, the son of James Closs and Elizabeth Doyle. He is survived by his wife, the former Gladys Munro, one daughter Helen (Mrs. Ted Gillan) Pakenham; two brothers, William of Lanark Lodge and Pat of Ottawa. The deceased members of his family are; Annie, Prestonvale, Julia (Mrs. William Noonan) Oshawa; Irene (Mrs. Thomas Tovey) Malton, Bob of Perth, Thomas L. of Ottawa and Vince of Lanark. The funeral was held from Young's Funeral Home on Saturday, Nov. 1st, at 10.30 a.m. to Sacred Heart Church, Lanark, where requiem mass was celebrated by Father Manning. Prayers at the graveside were said by Rev. H. Brown. Burial was in Clayton Cemetery. The pallbearers were neighbours; Lloyd Dickinson, Ronald Dickinson, Harry McGee, Frank Quinn, James Quinn and William Halpenny. |
Almonte Youth Loses His Life In Car Accident
An 18-year-old Almonte youth, Ralph Alfons Elsner, lost his life as the result of a single car accident which occurred about 1.45 a.m. last Saturday morning on highway 29 about a mile north of the Appleton turn off. The car, driven by William Bhe, 20, of Almonte, left the fog shrouded road and rolled over in the ditch. Perth O.P.P. officers believe Mr. Elsner was thrown under the car in the mishap in which four other youths were injured. Taken to Carleton Place Memorial Hospital were Charles Walters, 19, of Tichborne; Charlene Walters, 17, and David Laforce, 20, of Almonte, and Mary Hannah, 19, of Parham. All were treated and released with the exception of Miss Hannah. Mr. Laforce re-entered hospital here the next day with back problems. The driver was shaken up slightly in the crash and was later taken to the O.P.P. District 10 headquarters in Perth. The dead youth was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Alfons Elsner of R.R. 1, Arnprior. He obtained his education at Almonte District High School before becoming a carpenter. He is survived by two brothers, Berndt and Henry, both of Almonte. |

The funeral of James Samuel McGregor took place Friday, January 11th, 1974, from the Kerry Funeral Home, Elgin Street, Almonte. Service was conducted in St. Paul's Anglican Church by Lt. Col. the Rev. G. F. Bickley and assisted by the Ven. J. Salter. Interment was made at St. Paul's Cemetery. Mr. McGregor, who had resided at 40 Euphemia Street, Almonte, passed away suddenly at his residence on Wednesday, January 9. He was in his 65th year. Born in Almonte, April 21, 1909, he was the son of the late James A. McGregor and Alice Cochrane. He was educated and spent most of his life in Almonte where he was well known for his interest in sports. He was a member of St. Paul's Anglican Church and was a Past Master of Mississippi Lodge No. 147. He was married to the former Emma Evelyn Churchill on December 31, 1940. Besides his wife Evelyn, he is survived by a daughter, Joan (Mrs. Robert Robinson), Almonte; a son, Robert Allan, Vancouver; his mother, Mrs. Alice McGregor, Almonte and grandchildren; Susan and Marty Robinson, Almonte; dear brother of Kenneth, Melville, Almonte, Lila (Mrs. Gerald Crawford), Raymond, Carleton Place; Arthur, Perth, Jean (Mrs. Donald Haley), Cobourg and predeceased by Norman, Truro, N.S. MARLENE JUNE KILLEEN
Marlene June (Perfitt) Killeen, the beloved wife of Lyle Joseph Killeen of R.R.2, Carp, passed away at the Ottawa Civic Hospital on Thursday, January 9, 1975. She was 31 years of age. Mrs. Killeen was born in Ottawa on August 21, 1943, a daughter of the late Capt. Arthur Edward Perfitt and Mrs. Sadie Perfitt. She received her education in Almonte public and high schools. Marlene was active as a 4-H Club member, in which work she received Provincial honours, and of the Rideau Lakes Region Antique and Classic Car Club. Her hobby was restoring antique furniture. On March 17, 1962, she was married in Huntley to Lyle Joseph Killeen who survives. Also surviving are her mother, Mrs. Sadie Perfitt, a son, Ronald and daughter, Heather, at home; a sister Sandra (Mrs. Lennis Davey) of Almonte, and her grandmother, Mrs. Alice Lang of Ottawa. The funeral was held from the Kerry Funeral Home, Elgin Street, on Saturday, January 11, at 10 o'clock, with Rev. Robert McCrea officiating at the service. Cremation was at Pinecrest Crematorium. Pallbearers were six brothers-in-law, Carl, Morris, Pat, Mike, Glenn and Merrill Killeen. |
LORNE EDWARD RITCHIE Lorne Edward Ritchie of 230 3ridge street, Almonte, passed away at noon on Thursday, November 15, at the Ottawa Civic Hospital, following a brief illness. He was 62. Born in Almonte on April 3rd, 1911, he was a son of Mrs. Eva Mae (Monterville) Ritchie, now of Perth, and the late Samuel Ritchie. He received his education in Almonte schools. Mr. Ritchie was a former member of the Royal Canadian Air Force, and before his retirement was with the Department of National Defence. He was a member of Almonte United Church, Granite Chapter No. 63 and Mississippi Lodge No. 147 A.F. and A.M., and Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 240. He was also a member of the Mississippi Golf Club and of the Almonte Curling Club. He was married to the former Vera Barker at Blakeney on November 25, 1939. Surviving besides his wife and mother, are a son, David Ritchie of Montreal, and two brothers, Howard Ritchie of Stratford, Ontario, and Harold Ritchie of Nairn Centre, Ontario. A sister, Hazel (Mrs. John Livingston) predeceased him. The funeral was held from the Comba Funeral Home, Church street, on Sunday, November 18, 2:30 p.m., with burial at the Auld Kirk Cemetery. Rev. Robert McCrea of Almonte United Church conducted the services. Pallbearers were Harry Walker, Wilfred Lindsay, Nickolas Magus, Clare Syme, Elmer West and Albert Gale. A Masonic service and a Legion service were held at the funeral home on Saturday evening. |

JENNIE RUBENA BARNES
Mrs. Jennie Rubena (McMunn) Barnes (nee Ruby McMunn) passed away on March 15th, 1975, at the Samaritan Hospital, Ashland, Ohio, after a lengthy illness. She was sixty years of age. She had resided at 505 Country Club Lane in Ashland. Mrs. Barnes was born on February 4th, 1915, at Almonte and was the daughter of Thomas McMunn and his wife Bertha. Mrs. McMunn survives her. She received her education at Almonte. Mrs. Barnes is survived by her husband, Mr. Thomas W. Barnes, and by her children, Mary Anne (Mrs. Trail]); Nancy (Mrs. Green); Ms. Sheri Barnes and Thomas W. Barnes Jr. Mrs. Barnes is also survived by her sisters, Mrs. Eleanor White and Mrs. Lena Toole and brothers, Keith McMunn and Arnold McMunn. The funeral was held from the Alan Barker Funeral Home on March 18th. The service was conducted by the Rev. Harry Brown of Clayton. Interment will be at the St. George's Anglican Cemetery. CECIL McINTYRE
The sudden death of Cecil Milton McIntyre of 188 Country Street occurred in Almonte on Monday, October 20th, 1975. He was in his 62nd year. Mr. McIntyre was born on December 26, 1913 in Langham, Saskatchewan, the son of the late John A. McIntyre and the late Euphemia Barr. Mr. McIntyre served from 1940 to 1945 in the R.C.A.F. during the Second World War. He farmed in Ramsay township for several years, after which he was employed by Pfizer of Canada in Arnprior for thirteen years. Ill health then forced him into semi-retirement. An avid fan of all sports and very interested in music, Mr. McIntyre was also a member of the Almonte United Church. On July 10, 1943, he married Evelyn Symington in Almonte whom he predeceases. Mrs. McIntyre is an elementary school teacher in Almonte. Surviving are his wife Evelyn, and daughters Wilma Jean Chapman of Ottawa, and Gail Evelyn Colbourne of Bells Corners. Also surviving are brothers; Everton of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan; MacPherson of Delisle, Saskatchewan, David of Langley, British Columbia; and sisters Violet Brown of Langham, Saskatchewan, Jean McMillan of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan; and Ada Urquhart of Edmonton, Alberta. Predeceased is one daughter, Gwen Evelyn, who died in infancy. The funeral was held from the Kerry Funeral Home, Almonte, on Thursday, October 23 at 2.00 p.m. with interment in Auld Kirk Cemetery. Rev. Robert J. McCrea officiated. Pallbearers were David Chapman, Douglas Colbourne, Mac McIntyre, Dave McIntyre, Clair Symington, and Wayne Symington. MRS. ESABEL McGEE
Mrs. Esabel (Bella) (Barr) McGee passed away at the Almonte Hospital on March 24th, 1975, following a lengthy illness. She was 87 years of age. She had resided at Clayton. Mrs. McGee was born at Darling Township in 1888. She attended the United Church at Clayton. She was married to Mr. Harry McGee. She is survived by their daughters, Esabel (Mrs. Len Currans of Smiths Falls), Shirley (Mrs. Jack MacFarlane of Kingston), and Pearl (Mrs. Jack Gill of Toronto) and by sons Leonard of Carleton Place and Clarence, Harry and Kenny. Mrs. McGee is also survived by 16 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. One brother, Mr. Alfred Barr of Almonte, survives. Mrs. McGee was predeceased by seven brothers and one sister. The funeral was held from the chapel of the Alan Barker Funeral Home in Carleton Place, at 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 27th. The service was conducted by the Rev. Gordon C. Smyth. Interment was in the Clayton United Cemetery. The pallbearers were six grandsons of Mrs. McGee. The death of Mrs. Edward Manarey of Bridge Street, Almonte, occurred at the Riverside Hospital, Ottawa, on Wednesday afternoon, March 12, following a short illness. She was 86. The former Caroline Evans, she was born at White Lake on July 16, 1888, a daughter of the late George Evans and his wife, Mary Thomlinson. She was married at Cedar Hill on June 3, 1907, to the late Edward Manarey. Mrs. Manarey was a member of Almonte United Church. She is survived by two sons Stewart and Glen of Almonte, and three daughters, Myrtle (Mrs. Brown) and Phyllis, both of Ottawa, and Hazel (Mrs. Harry Sadler) of Carleton Place. The funeral was held from the Kerry Funeral Home, Elgin Street, Almonte, on Friday afternoon, March 14, with interment at Clayton United Cemetery. Rev. Robert McCrea conducted the services. Pallbearers were Murray Sadler, Jack Sadler, Gordon Manarey, William Cameron, Lloyd Dickson and Forbes Evans. |
RALPH ALFONS ELSNER
The family and friends of Ralph Alfons Elsner were deeply saddened to learn of the sudden death of the 18-year-old Almonte youth as the result of an automobile accident on highway 29 between Almonte and Carleton Place on November 24th, 1973. Son of Mr. Alfons Hugo Elsner and his wife, Elfriede Emma, of R.R. 1, Arnprior, who survive, Ralph was born at Ottawa Ontario, on August 3rd, 1955. He later moved with his family to the Almonte area, where he attended local schools. A carpenter by trade, he enjoyed woodworking and participated in local activities, being a member of the Almonte Broomball league. He was also a Member of Almonte United Church. Besides his parents, the deceased is survived by two brothers, Berndt and Henry, both of Almonte. Funeral services were held from the Kerry Funeral Home, 154 Elgin Street, on Monday, November 26th, at 2 p.m., With Rev. Robert J. McCrea conducting the services. Interment was in Auld Kirk Cemetery. |

On Wednesday, August 20, 1975, Arvilla Margaret Julia (Ranger) Larocque, a lifetime resident of Darling Township, entered into rest at St. Marys-of-the-Lake hospital in Kingston, in her 63rd year. Born in Lavant Township on October 29th, 1912, Arvilla was a daughter of the late Antoine Ranger and Edith MacFarlane. She was united in marriage to William Larocque in St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Almonte, on August 25, 1930. Left to mourn her loss are a loving husband, William and four sons, George, Almonte; Arthur, at home; Robert, Carleton Place, and John at home; three daughters, Ann (Mrs. Arthur Scott) Lanark, Ruth (Mrs. A. E. Ewing) Camp Borden, Edith (Mrs. Leonard Drynan) Almonte. She is also survived by a loving mother, Mrs. Teresa Ranger, R.R.4 Lanark; three brothers, Clarence, Deseronto; Frank, London, Ontario; Douglas R.R.4, Lanark; four sisters, Mae (Mrs. Sam Andersen), R.R.4 Lanark; Luella (Mrs. Howard Dermody), Onaping; Angeline (Mrs. Lester Burgess), R.R.4 Lanark; Mrs. Gertrude Elliott, R.R.4 Lanark, and 11 grandchildren; Kim Larocque, Deborah, Dianne and David Ewing, Gregory, Jamie and Tracey-Ann Scott, Michael and Heather Drynan and Jerry and Cathy Larocque. The body rested at Young's Funeral Home, Lanark, where a service was conducted by Rev. Father Milaney, then to Hopetown Cemetery for interment. Pallbearers were John Ebbs, Norval Wilson, Keith MacNaughton, Carl Camelon, Cecil King and Leonard Barr. Flowers were carried by nephews and friends of the deceased. Funeral services for Bonnie Lynn McCartney were held at her parents' home, R.R. 4 Pakenham, on Wednesday, Sept. 4, with burial at Auld Kirk Cemetery. Rev. Geo. L. Bickley of St. Paul's Church, Almonte conducted the services. Bonnie Lynn, who was a Grade 11 student at Almonte High School, died Sunday, Sept. 1st, of injuries received in a car crash on highway 17 near the highway 44 turnoff. She was 17 years of age. Born at Pakenham on January 13, 1957, she was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David McCartney (nee Shirley Smith). She received her elementary education at Pakenham and Almonte schools. Surviving besides her parents are two brothers, Bill and Bruce; sisters Beverley, Shelly and Sheila; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. James McCartney, Pakenham; Mr. and Mrs. Alton Box, Almonte, and Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Smith, Stittsville, and her great grandparents, Mrs. Bill Smith of Carleton Place and Mrs. Horace Cavanagh, Almonte. MRS. JESSIE MAY JULIAN
The death of Mrs. Jessie May (Miller) Julian, widow of Walter Julian, occurred at the Almonte Nursing Home on Friday, August 16th, 1974. She was in her 93rd year. Mrs. Julian was born at Cedar Hill, daughter of the late Young Miller and his wife Mary Elizabeth Ellis. In 1906 she married Walter Julian, who predeceased her in 1951, and came to reside in Almonte. Of this union Mrs. Julian is survived by four sons, Archie, Albert and Eric of Almonte, Lloyd of Hanover, Ontario and three daughters, Mary (Mrs. John Poynter), Carleton Place, Edna (Mrs. Rene McKinnon), Hull, Quebec, and Betty (Mrs. Roger Moodie) of Kanata. Three sons predeceased her; Harold, George and Bert and four children died in infancy. Also surviving are 16 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren. One sister, Mrs. Allan Woods (Ethel), of Indian Head, Saskatchewan, also survives. The funeral took place on Monday, August 19th from the Comba Funeral Home. Funeral services were held at the funeral home at 2 p.m. and burial was in the Auld Kirk. Rev. Robert McCrea conducted the services.
