Obituary

John Lloyd Erskine operated local IGA for many years.

A curling club member since the later 1930s, John Erskine threw the first stone when the new rink opened in October, 1989.

Almonte lost one of its well-known residents with the passing of John Lloyd Erskine Dec. 26 at the Almonte General Hospital. The former Union Street resident was 95. Mr. Erskine, the eldest of a family of four, was born in Ramsay Township to the late John A. Erskine and Marion Campbell on February 27, 1897. In 1918, he married the former Sarah Esther Rath, who pre- deceased him in 1981. He was also predeceased by one brother, Thomas Erskine, and two sisters, Edith (Mrs. Thomas Edwards) and Maisie Erskine. He is survived by several nieces and nephews. The well-known curling enthusiast received his education at the Clayton Public School, leaving at the age of 14 to work at his father's store in Clayton. When he was married, Mr. Erskine moved to his Ramsay farm which he tended to until the time of his father's death in 1932. He returned to Clayton to take over the family general store and wood business. In 1947, he retired and moved to Almonte. The same year, he bought the Almonte Cold Storage, operating it as a place to store meat and surplus government butter. Eight years later he converted the business to an IGA supermarket. He took particular pride in the produce department, which he personally directed. In 1967, he took two partners into the business. With them, he operated the IGA until it was sold in 1975. He worked for the new owner until shortly after the store moved to a new location in 1990. Throughout his lifetime, Johnnie had many interests besides business. He was a former member of St. George's Anglican Church in Clayton and sang in the church choir and a present member of St. Paul's Anglican Church in Almonte. He was an avid deer hunter and until this past year had hunted annually since he was 14 years old. Mr. Erskine was a keen curler and in 1989, at the age of 92, threw the first rock at the new Almonte Curling Rink after re-dedicating the same set of matched stones he had donated to the old curling rink in 1959. Mr. Erskine rested at the Kerry Funeral Home and thence to St. Paul's Anglican Church. The funeral service was conducted Dec. 28 by Rev. Robert Davis and assisted by Rev. George Bickley. Honorary pallbearers were Norman Hutt, Howard Boal, Roy Thompson, Bob Brydges, Bud Mitchell and Murray Guthrie. Active pallbearers were Claire Symington, Mervyn Munro, Gordon Pike, Chris Dougherty, Ray Edwards, and Russell Camelon. Interment will be at the St. George's Cemetery in Clayton in the spring.
