ANOTHER PIONEER
RESIDENT PASSES
Darius Bettes Snider Passed
Away Saturday in His 91st
Year -- Was Prominent In
Town For Many Years As
Councillor, Assessor, Etc.
MEAFORD EXPRESS (1935) - The death of Darius Bettes Snider on Saturday in his 91st year removed another of the early residents of this town and district. Deceased had been in failing health for some time and suffered a stroke a few days ago from which he failed to rally.
The late Mr. Snider was born in Brock Township, Ontario county near Kingston, in 1844, and came with his parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Snider, to St. Vincent, as a boy of sixteen years of age. The family settled on the corner of the 9th line and 15 and 16 sideroad, and for years the place was known as Snider's corner, the father having deeded to the Church Board the site on which Bethesda Church now stands.
Deceased was a man of varied pursuits. He was farmer, gardener, horse fancier, photographer, assessor and Councillor in Meaford. One of the earliest photographs of the writer's parents and family was taken by Mr. Snider. He at that time was conducting the Hart Studios on Sykes street. For many years Mr. Snider acted as Councillor in Meaford, his first service being rendered shortly after the incorporation of the town. For one year he acted Deputy Reeve. He was also a member of the Council some years ago when all, with the exception of himself, were disqualified over some lighting agreement made by the town, a fact he often referred to when reminiscing with friends. Deceased was a man of strong convictions and gave good service in municipal capacity. For some years he acted as town assessor and gave freely of his knowledge to assist others in such office.
The late Mr. Snider and the late Mrs. Snider, the latter predeceasing him by some three years, were members of the Church of Christ, and were highly esteemed by those with whom they came in contact. There was no family. The couple adopted a number of children and reared them to manhood and womanhood and they have since left these parts.
The funeral was held on Monday afternoon from Mrs. Thomas Storey's Nursing Home on Marshall st., to Lakeview Chapel, awaiting interment in Snider's Burying Ground, St. Vincent. Service was conducted in Church of Christ, at two o'clock.
